Scientists figured out why so many Labrador Retrievers are fat

  • Dogs, just like humans, can gain excessive amounts of weight. While some dogs may have a few too many table scraps, there's one breed that has a disposition to packing on the pounds.

    I think the biggest problem with owning a labrador is how they can look so totally pathetic when they're begging for food. Even if the dog looks like a beer barrel with legs, It can still give a pretty convincing "They don't feed me" expression that's hard to ignore. It's difficult not to give in and throw them a treat.
    If you're in a household with 3 or 4 kids (Or have multiple friends visit with there kids a few days a week) the dog'll go around and successfully beg food out of all of them.
    It's hard to make a 4 or 5 year old kid understand that they mustn't thread some of whatever they're eating into your dog, They just want to make the lab happy, And food obviously does the trick.
    These days I tend to just keep an eye on quantity of EXTRA food my lab's getting and adjust one of her two regular daily meals to compensate.

      I also have a Labrador, yes, i give him extra treat, but we walk extra miles everyday, it's called "Journey". Two
      compulsary"Journey" everyday for "peeh and pooh" and learning. Our journey is his University,l where he smells, see,
      observe and perceive
      everything of interest to him along the way. Because we walk extra miles everyday, it keeps him fit, though he loves to eat.

      @@AlBundyy I’m sorry I cannot get any measurements as “Jim” has passed away. But he was a pure bread chocolate alpha male. He stood very tall, very muscular, and slightly overweight when he got older. All that weight made it tough on his body which was why he was 12 when he passed.

  • @wa798
    @wa798 6 лет назад +8

    1 key point left out...the difference of English Labradors vs. Labrador Retriever in terms of body is day & night. I don't recall too many overweight Labrador Retriever's, but most English Labs are significantly larger. There's probably at minimum 50-60lb difference between the 2.

    • @JessieR2023
      @JessieR2023 5 лет назад +1

      WCLSmooth that’s how they breed them to be. Stockier with boxy face. They are more muscular, but gentle and more mellow than American labs. They are show dogs which mean they can’t be neutered that’s why all of them look bigger, stronger, and muscular. American labs are field dog which mean they need to stay lean to be healthy and run without struggling with fat on their body. They have longer legs which is bad if they are overweight.

    A mate of mine used to be the landlord of a pub. He also had a black lab called Sally. He worked from home since getting the dog, so she was used to always being with him, and if she couldn't get to him in the bar she'd make LOUD pathetic sounds just behind the door to the flat, So she had to be allowed into the bar with him.........And she'd constantly be "power begging" for food from the customers. All the y served was the usual bar snacks, baskets of chips (Fries), and sausage/bacon sandwiches, But a lab can beg a surprising amount of these during a night in the bar when there's constantly at least 4 or 5 people eating. At one point she looking like a fur covered bear keg !
    It got to a point where he had notes pinned to the front door and around the bar asking people not to feed the dog because she was on a strict diet due to health problems. If one of the regulars saw someone else threading crisps into her they'd dispense a polite lecture on the merits of NOT feeding the dog into an early grave. :)

    Considering the origins of the breed, its no surprise that they will still eat just about anything they can get in their mouths. On the Scottish island of Labrador, where their ancestors originated, they were used to living off nothing but scraps from their owners, so their iron guts evolved to process just about anything for energy.

    • @johntruex465

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 3 года назад

      @@johntruex465 Actually, Labradors were created mainly by crossing Newfoundland's and "St John's water dog", but then a few other dogs were bread into the stock until we ended up with Labradors. The Newfoundland had Canadian roots, but the tweaking that was done to finally bring us to the Labrador we know today was done in England. Before that this genetic line of dogs had no real breed designation, and were pretty much seen as useful mongrel gun dogs.
      My memory on the exact history of the breed is a bit patchy, but I do remember that Labs were the result of a breeding project that was conducted by a small group of Lords, Dukes and Earls to create what they felt was the perfect retriever.
      The OP might be getting confused with Golden Retrieves. These also have a little St John's water dog and Newfoundland In their ancestry, but there's also a LOT of other breeds in there too (Including Spaniel and Irish Setter apparently !). This breading project was done In Scotland by a group of the Scottish aristocracy pretty much for the same reasons as the toffs in England bread the Lab.
      Growing up, I always thought either Labradors or golden retrievers must be an offshoot of the other's bloodline. But I was surprised when I found out that these dogs (that are so similar in temperament and build), were in fact completely separate breeds from different bloodlines, with little in the way of common ancestry.
      Oh, and the St John's water dog was actually named after Lord John Scott, who was one of the aristocracy who worked on creating the Labrador. As far as I remember, he actually WAS Scottish.

    My labrador weighs 122ibs now, but he has converted most of that weight into muscle since he shares 25 - 30 miles with me on a weekly basis. He also plays frisbee and tug of war. He enjoys working out with his human as much as he enjoys eating. Maybe Labs are like this since they are also known as 'the worker dog'. They'd retrieve the hunter's prey. If you exercise a lot, you tend to eat a lot.

    No excuse for having a fat dog. "OMG it's his genes he's pre-disposed to be fat." True but there's a simple solution: DON'T FEED HIM. It's not like he can go to the corner store and buy some cookies himself. If you're finding that you're dog is getting fat feed it a reduced amount at specific times of the day, don't give it table scraps and exercise more. Just because a breed gains weight easier doesn't mean you should use that as an excuse to why you're a shitty owner. I'd be like if gingers whined and blamed the sun for why they roast after 20 minutes outside and complained about how lucky black people were.
