It is quite interesting to see my city by the eyes of foreigners. I was shocked to see the horrible room you rented. How much did they charge you for that place? I believe an inspection would close that place for the lack of conditions and the danger with the stairs just by the door. As you said in the video, the city had become hugely gentrified and I'd also add it is full of "investors" kicking portuguese people out of their houses to scam tourists. Waiting for part 2.

Thank you for your comment. I paid approx 76 euros per night, no breakfast. This was the only reasonable rate I found on Booking.com and I had to book it in advance before arrival. It was misleadingly named "Chiado Open World Hostel", but it was not in Chiado. It was on Rua dos Fanqueiros. And yes, it seems that cities all over the western world are becoming unaffordable to the locals due to investors converting apartments to short-term rentals and foreigners on high incomes choosing to live in a relatively inexpensive city like Lisbon (compared to NYC it's cheap!). I feel bad for these sobering transformations, but "that's progress" as some would say.

@@DevoutDarwinist thank you for your reply. It is quite expensive for the kind of room they offered you and you're right. It is quite far from Chiado. Hope you enjoyed yur trip anyway. *

Hello my friend darwinist, i saw this video and was very excited to know that you had been in Portugal in 1975. It was very nice to watch the photos of before and you making that " comunistic" gesture. I am sorry you could' t se the S. Carlos opera house and that you had to endure such horrific room. You could have askedbfor the book of conplaints that they are obliged to give to you, so that you could write down what you had endured there. They shouldn' t be opened.i will subscribe to watch further videos. You have nothing to appologise for.

Thanks so much for taking the time to watch the video and leave your comment. I guess I must be a dinosaur with my old memories of visiting Lisbon in 1975. Time marches on. Travel does leave one with touching memories.
