Hello I'm some guy named Dave in Portugal.
This is a love letter to a city that changed my life forever. 🥬
In this episode Dave takes you through a deep dive journey into the depths of the authentic side of Lisbon. We check out Anthony Bourdain's favorite restaurant in Lisbon and find out why the Golden Gate look-alike is named after the date April 25th. Dave also listens to Fado music in a Fado House.

So right Mário: travelers should always come with respect for the country and its culture and history. You can have fun anywhere and get drunk. Don’t waste a trip in another part of the world and not observe its riches.

Mario and his Tuk Tuk are a “MUST DO” if you’re visiting Lisbon!!! We just spent 5hrs riding with him on 11/22/2023. After watching this video my wife and I contacted Mario through FaceBook as the video suggested. He’s incredibly personable, responsive, and professional. We had options of a 3, 5, or 8hr tour. He picked us up outside our hotel, and offered to drop us anywhere afterwards. The tour included scenic beauty and lookouts over the city, churches, amazing architecture, monuments, street art, unique neighborhoods, tastings, and HISTORY. So much history. Mario is an absolute wealth of knowledge, and I really respected how he shared Portugal’s greatest triumphs alongside the defeats, and some dark times. Along with some personal stories during the 1974 revolution. While he obviously has national pride (deservedly so), he also paints a complete narrative which was fascinating and illuminating. Lisbon is now in my Top 3 favorite international cities along with Rome and Paris. Mario brought it alive. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mario for anyone needing a first or more complete exploration of Lisbon. Next time we are in Lisbon I’ll make arrangements to meet him long enough for a hug and a hello.

Wow you actually did justice to the city that has been my home town for the last 13 years (I live 15 minutes from the city by train). I think the original recipe of the pastel de nata is served in Belém (even though I don't taste much difference). A lot has changed in the last 13 years, a lot of that is good, but indeed the disadvantage is that Alfaçinhas can no longer afford to live in the capital. I never thought about taking tram 28 in campo de ourique. Let's not inform the tourists there will be a metro station there as then this stop will also be a pain to get on the tram. (in my opinion the tourists should take the red tram that is more expensive but at least then we can use the yellow one as public transport as we pay taxes for that).

I truly understand his every words and the fact that people need to respect where they go and appreciate the history and culture. I did my first trip to Portugal in May and started in Porto, then Tomar, Evora, Sintra, Alcobasa, Coimbra, Nazare, Lisboa, and I was ready to say i want to live in any of those cities. The sights were breath taking, the people were so nice and welcoming, and the food.... Yummy. I loved the nanny ways to cook bacalao and the awesome pasteisl de nata, as well as the many other treats I savored. I'm definitely looking forward to another trip to explore even more cities/areas. This video helped me to experience Portugal through the eyes of a local person, who is sharing his love and passion for his country . The video also tells you a sad truth about locals who are priced out of their homes and have difficulty finding a job after the age of 40 y.o. I enjoyed learning the culture, seeing the art and learning the history of the Portugal. I would love to see more if this kind of videos in the future.

I've lived in Lisbon for over a year now, and I still haven't seen some of these places. That speaks to the depth and breadth of what Lisbon has to offer. There's a new adventure around every corner it seems. Enjoying a pint while watching the sun set at one of the many miradouros throughout the city should be high on everyone's to-do list. For anyone planning a visit, do yourself a massive favor and make time for things like that. Go slow, really relax. You won't get any bonus points in life by seeing as many sights as possible in a day. Give yourself at least a week in Lisbon, and leave plenty of time to watch a sunset, or spend a few hours at a kiosk watching the world go by.
Also, skip tram 28, unless you enjoy being packed into a small wooden vehicle "butts to nuts". But, do take a tuk-tuk tour. Yeah, it can be a bit pricey, but if you land a good driver, like Dave did, you'll have a great time bombing around the city, seeing a lot of neat things and getting a fun tour.

Dear David, this video is awesome. We can only thank you from the bottom of our hearts. All the things you pointed out are very relevant, you are now one of us now. Just two little things:
    1) the exodus in Lisboa started many years ago, tourism, speculation and Airbnb like companies "just" accelerated it.
    2) you can (and, in fact, you should) applaud fado. In the Coimbra´s tradition (the Balada de Coimbra, or Fado de Coimbra) you don't applaud, but Fado is a Canção de Lisboa (Lisboa's song), and we always applaud it. We don't clap hands during a song, though, unless the singer leads you to it, sometimes when singing a popular march, or Marcha Popular (also a Lisboa's Tradition)
Thank you for all your work, all your videos, all your love for Portugal

Wow, you have improved a lot... I was brought up in Lisbon, and the locals don't say "Lisboa", they actually say "Lshboa", they think it's posh, hahaha I studied languages, I say Lisboa. Sardines in September are not expected to be good, take a note that sardines are better eaten in months without the letter "r". Loved the detail about the "azulejo", it does come from old Andalusian Arabic "az-zuláyǧ", which means polished stone, Moroccan tiles are still broken in pieces and polished in small forms. The area near Portas do Sol you show in minute 10:23 is where Muslims used to be buried before the Christian conquest in 1147, after the conquest the Moors were forced to settle in today's Mouraria (Moorish Quarter) and their second cemetery ("almocave" from Andalusian Arabic "al-maqbara", this is also etymology for the English word macabre) was right below Mirador da Graça.
The biggest empire in world was actually the Spanish Empire between 1580 and 1640 when the Spanish Kings Philip II, Philip III and Philip IV ruled Portugal, it was Spanish and Portuguese empires combined, after this only the British could built a big empire. I just wanted to correct what Mário said.
The fado [from Arabic حدو (ḥadû)] music was born in the old Mourara (Moorish Quarter) of Lisbon and only came out of the closet when centuries of Catholic inquisition against the Muslims and Jews was abolished in the 1820s. Fado is more about longing for, about the expression of a permanent loss than about music itself. Some people say fado was initially sung by Crypto-Muslims (people that practised hidden Islam) from Lisbon to express their terrible loss the loss of their (religious) freedom, traditional fado dark outfit has Moorish roots and the Portuguese guitar is said to be a daughter of the Arabic oud.
The word "saudade" can be translated into "loss" or longing for, some linguists say the word saudade may also have its roots in Arabic سوداء (saudâ), which also means sadness and melancholy, since the word was already used by Mozarabic poets from Córdoba, particularly the poet Ibn Quzmān al-Qurṭubī (1087-1160).
The 25th April bridge was officially named as "Ponto sobre o Tejo" it was never officially named "Salazar Bridge" as there were another "Salazar Bridge" in the country and the law did not allow two bridges with the same name. Though the bridge was known by everyone as "Ponte Salazar" and there are videos showing the letters being removed after the revolution in 1974. The dictatorship lasted for 48 years.

    • @paulocastrogarrido3499
      @paulocastrogarrido3499 10 месяцев назад
