- Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/Simpli... When we moved plots three years ago I forgot to bring the Rhubarb with us. Today we managed to get that and in this episode, we show you how Splitting & Transplanting Rhubarb For A Great Harvest can really provide you with all you require.
I wanted this one back as it is a very old variety called Mammoth Red and I wanted to continue growing this one. It has enormous stalks and leaves and is perfect for eating and showing.
Splitting & Transplanting Rhubarb Will help me to continue to grow this fantastic variety and by splitting and transplanting it gets a renewed lease of energy that revitalises old plants. With this in mind, if your rhubarb starts to throw a flower spike, You must snap it off or your rhubarb plant will die. I would then suggest for the next season splitting and transplanting it to a different location to continue the plant's growth.

Off topic but can I ask what mic you're using please?

I have tried to find information on rhubarb... I feel that yours is the very best...
thank you
Thank you

Fabulous vegetable! I actually grow mine in my front garden as its an attractive plant in its own right :)
Yes Ralph it would be perfect in an ornamental garden
Great video young fella , my wife wants me to expand our Rhubarb plant by 3 sizes. This a great to know as my wife's rhubarb crisp is much in demand from my grandkids. We grow an extensive garden that provides thro the winter & even freezes her rhubarb in winter. With my harvested game meals , rhubarb is a welcome desert. 74+🍁 hunter Yorkshire expat
Try using a 'root feeder', which is usually used to deep water trees. It is a hollow sturdy rod with a hole in the end. It connects to a hose, and you jab the end of the rod up to 2ft under the ground and turn on the water - putting the water directly at the roots of the plant. I have used it to water tomato and pepper plants to great success.
Just as I was thinking about Rhubarb, perfect timing. My granny's old plot has Rhubarb in it not doing to well, my dad said it must be 70 years old. So I'll dig it up and split it, fingers crossed it works.
That will really help
Wow 70 years old !
We love rhubarb crumble and our rhubarb gets huge!
Yeah these came from one plant, If you look back to my very old videos you will see it. My son was hiding behind just one leaf.
First time I've come across your site, I had questions about rhubarb and you've manged to answer every one of them with this video. I shall be subscribing! Thank you for the detailed info, very useful. Your soil looks amazing! It will have taken dedication and work I know.
Hi Pegs, Thanks for such a kind comment. Yes you have to look after your soil. Welcome to UK Here We Grow. Make sure you sub as I maybe changing the name during a rebrand. My aim is to provide content that answers those questions. Its great to know I managed that in this video for you. have a great day :)
Thankyou🙂I haven't fed my poor rhubarb for years, no wonder it looks bad. Awesome advice. 👍
time to feed it now Louisa Sorry for the late reply. I have been unwell. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Hello Tony, lovely to see your video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I love Rhubarb, I have moved it everytime I've moved and it has thrived everywhere, however, it was put hastily into soil that wasn't right and it really looked bad...stems died away but the crown is intact still.
I soaked it for a few hours and prepared a sunny bed for it to be planted.
I have always removed the stalks altogether planting only the crown.
I am hoping to salvage my lovely plant as it was from my grandmother's garden who had to move in the 1970's, so it has sentimental value as well. Many blessings to you from NZ💞
Oh I had to move these plants again as i planted them in an area without thinking. But check them out in this video ruclips.net/video/doairVe_jsw/видео.html
Nice to see you got some of your old plant nice to see it's not left away. Mi dad have a variety that he have from 1960 and the plant is older then that didn't came by planting seed and every one that tasted that rhubarb love it.
Yeah, Sometimes you have to lift and divide and bring your stuff with you. cant leave proven crops behind
Wonderful video as always.
Thanks mate
nice love it
Thanks
great video on how to divide and plant these! thank you!!
and.....side note...is no one noticing how handsome this fellow is? and that accent!! yes please!
Wow, thank you!
Hi, good useful information, I have just found your site, which is better than most for practical purposes. I was just about to split and divide my Rhubarb, (Mount Tambourine variety) and you have given me some good information. It’s early winter here in Tasmania so it’s just the right time.
Glad it was helpful! Did you see last weeks video on these plants are like now?
Nice one Tony. Just what i was looking for 🙂💕
Perfect Gymwitch :)
Thanks for the tip, Tony. Now you will have Rhubarb for the foreseeable future
Yes back to the rhubarb have missed it last couple of years mate
So glad that you sorted the subtitles, thank you lots. I now can plant my two rhubarbs the right way with confidence with your good advice :-) looking forward to making the crumble next year. One of my rhubarbs has a flower on it ?
You need to pull that off Rachel, then when you have done that next year lift the crown and split it. If you dont pull it and let it go to seed the plant will die
UK Here We Grow :O eeeaaakkk ,oh my ,I will pull the flower off, first thing tomorrow morning, thank you for letting me know and preventing us losing a plant. I appreciate it, bless you.
No problem, rip it out and you will be good :)
So much rain in Wales, I don't need to water it too often. My husband loves rhubarb pie so I grow it for him in a bucket. Thanks for a great video. xxx
Chris Im in Wales but the water when dry really helps the plant. its a lot of top growth to sustain
I've grown rhubarb for 6 years on my allotment and was planning to do what you've just done to re-vitalise the plants. Went to the plot this morning and 3 of my plants have bolted and are in flower! Nearly 4' high. Chopped it all back and now looking like yours. I'm happy :)
Perfect time then Steve, You be golden next year and will be the end of that plant bolting on ya
Another great video with awesome tips thanks tony
Thanks Paul glad you enjoyed it
I hated rhubarb till I had some rhubarb pie fresh from their allotment and it was beautiful tasted like strawberries. This is one veg I want to learn to grow.
Mandy fresh cut rhubarb is a different ball game
I love rhubarb... started mine from seed this year and she's pretty big for a potted plant (green composted with crop cover turned into the soil way before growing season started, and given mulch the year before which kinda got turned in... gave it some organic npk mix from seaweed and other stuff, kind of forgot now lol.... after applying microbe teas to my soil last year and using crop cover for compost as I have very limited space, my potted vegetables have been EXTREMELY healthy this year, although there wasn't enough drainage for stuff like garlic/onions I'll be fixing that.
year 2 gardening and loving it, massive crops too at a family garden
Where are you in the UK? I’m in Chicago, and we are talking about growing seasons, how short it is and how you have to do things to make it work
Hi Tony, I planted a small crown of Rhubarb earlier this year in a large bucket not really expecting much to be honest....It has done ok for it's first season and it has sent up 15 stalks with the biggest about an inch thick. I haven't pulled any stalks, do I just leave it to die back completely? I will be looking to transfer it into the ground later in the year for next season....Cheers mate, keep up the great vids....
I love rhubarb. I grew it for two years and then split my tubers. I lost the lot and haven' t grown it since but I love the stuff.
Do you know why you lost it MrsVsala?
UK Here We Grow Have no clue. I’m a learner Gardner and. don’t have the knowledge
Oh ok, well maybe they just got shocked or something its hard to tell from just a story

Thanks....Always need to go to UK sites for good rhubarb advice and recipes! Just not as popular in the states where I am except where passed down from earlier generations.
Hope you enjoy. check out last weeks video the tomato disease video and you will see me kneeling down in front of these now. I had to move them again since this video but theya re doing well
Tony thankyou for sharing this. Myself along with others arent having a great season with our Rubarb. From this i think they are lacking nutrients. Will look further into it. I gave it some comfrey fertilizer. Gave a good weeding around the various ones i have.I hope yours grows as big as the original ones, best of luck with them. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Lorraine. They wont this year as I moved them yet again but next year they will be back to normal.Sorry for the late reply I have had some personal issues
@@simplifygardening no problem at all Tony. Hope all will be ok. Since i left this comment i have weeded all round them and looking brighter. Well done on getting some of your old ones

Your welcome Cherry check out how these do in myvideo from last year
Would you put BFB in the soil??? I don't have anything else....have chicken pellets....not 6x but something else.
Where do you get potash?
Thanks for the education, I've done it wrong until now. No feeding, picked them down 70-80% every year. No wonder it's a very modest rhubarb plant. Why didn't I think it was like any other plant, needing some good old TLC from time to time? Thinking of dividing it and really get it going now. Question: What is the best time of year to divide a rhubarb? You said you didn't split it / bring it when you moved because it was in season...
People tend to think perennials will just look after themselves, but they need nourishment and water the same as the rest of us to get the best out of them
Where are you located. Thank you for your videos. Very informative

I didn’t know you can move rhubarb when it is growing. Anyway I moved one root from the greenhouse to the great outdoors. I gave it plenty of muck and filled the hole with water, firmed it in well and more water. It is having a big sulk. Perhaps I should leave the rest until the end of the season. Tony one thing that is easy to make gluten free is crumble, I make mine from a mixture of gf flours.
You can move them Wendy but better if you can wait after harvest time, however, I didnt have that option available to me and they will sulk and may even lose what leaves they have while the conserve energy and rebuild the root structure but they will come good. Ive never made crumble GF so that will be new to me this year
I grew up with rhubarb sticks and sugar dips
Hmm nice bitter and sweet
I looked in your video library, didn't see a follow on of the rhubarb planting. Perhaps you could include that with another video.
The more Elephants a man has, the higher his standing,
and the higher his rhubarb!
Talking of standing high. I have a new Gunnera coming so that should lift me a little more
What month should Rhubarb be split? Excellent video.
Early spring just as it starts to bud
I mowed down about a half dozen plants years ago. Had I known how expensive they would have become I would have kept them and sold it. The plants were about 3 feet around back then.
oh what a shame
You are Psychic Tony..... I was just saying to the Little Farmer we should try to move the Rhubarb up to the top end when ive shifted all the scrap and plan 3 trees there..........????????? SPOOKY and thanks again pal for this its really informative and ton point as ever. Big push on the shed this weekend BTW...

When splitting, do they have to have leaves? I’ve just picked the plant clean and need to split!
Better if they dont have Leaves Jez I was a little late here but they are doing very well, you can see them in the tomato disease video
@Starfish Start digging. LOL
They say split in spring before or just as the leaves start coming up
Last year, I think around March, I bought and planted 9 plants, only 6 made it. The main site I had had Champagne Rhubarb for 30 years, I think it just died as it was old, and over harvested for wine making. Threw all that out, dug in plenty of my well rotted own made compost, plus growmore slow release granules. Not all crowns grew, I carefully hand dug one crown up, and saw shoots on the underside, seems I had planted it upside down( not obvious to me, as I had a hard time seeing what were old stems and what were roots, some never had any buds on them. I took it to show a friend who knows way more than me. He said go back, plant it the right way up. This year, second year in my ground, one seems to have vanished, so I guess rotted away. The other is in the ground, as I marked the position so I never stood on it when on the garden. It is just a brown stump showing, about the size of a plum, doing nothing, yet my others are 6" tall now with leaves. Being aware that in future I could divide what I already have, should I leave the dormant one to see if anything happens, or throw it out. If I d get rid of it, how many years before I divide the others. I am not too tight to buy another crown, but I am awaiting to see how my crop will do, what yield I get. Last year I never pulled any rhubarb except one or two that had flowered. On the edge of my old rhubarb plot, some of the original plant seems to have grown again from remnants, this is an old plant as my Granny planted the original plant, I don't know when, but she died in 1974. Also with hindsight, if i had left the upside down plants in the ground, would they have recovered enough to be high yielding croppers and lasted many years do you think? Growing upside down seems to be a new habit of mine, I did it with some Conkers too, I thought the shoots would turn out to be the trunks, when I realised and turned them the right way up, they recovered well, and I imagine if kids still climb trees in 100 years time, they will like the nice horizontal trunk for sitting on.
Best Wishes, Neil, Oxfordshire.
Neil i am sure it would have found a way. rhubarb needs splitting when it flowers
You're honestly the only other person ive encountered online who also made rhubarb wine 😂
What? Rhubarb wine is one if the best to make. It won't win any too awards, but 3lb of Rhubard makes a gallon of wine (6 Bottles) anybody who likes a tipple needs to buy the book " First steps in Winemaking" simple effective wine making guide. I think by C.C. J. BERRY. ABOUT £5 ON EBAY. SORRY FOR CAPITALS, I CAN'T TURN THEM OFF ON MY PHONE, DUE TO IGNORANCE.
Thank you for that information 👍😉🍀

Do you know of any nurseries that sell the Mammoth Red variety?? Ive been hunting and hunting and just cant find it. Short of convincing someone like you to send me a chunk, i have no idea where to find it! There seems to be a poor selection of rhubarb variety in the nursery market... Its almost always Victoria, Victoria, Victoria.
I do love a bit of Rhubarb, got myself 2 plants, need to get them in the ground this bank holiday
Get them in Ant let them establish before taking any though
UK Here We Grow yea, won’t touch them until next year
Perfect pal
I have just started to grow rhubarb this year. What do I do in winter. Cover dig up or anything
Do you know where I could find some mammoth red rhubarb plants or seeds? Thanks
Thank you for your great videos Tony. They are really helpful. I grew rhubarb from seed last year and I have eight small crowns sprouting in pots now. When should I transplant them to the ground as I tried last summer and they simply died. I then saw a video, (maybe one of yours) where it said to transfer them after a year. Should I wait until they are fully in leaf or transfer them now while they are tiny? Cheers from Japan.
Get them in now and watch my video giant rhubarb to feed a dinosaur
I always wondered what happened to Mark Fowler from Eastenders
lol cheeky bugger
Wish I could find out where those two bags are in Arizona to get some
Poultry manure will work well
Do we always have to wait that rhubarb have leaf before transplants them, or it’s possible even in the beginning of season when leaf begins to grow?!
When can you divide them? and when is the best time too? (I'm in the UK) I have an old large one that could do with dividing at an allotment I have just taken over 5 days ago. All the best John
Wait until the end of season John when its died back and gone dormant that way you ca split it and then leave it dry a little before replanting it
@@simplifygardening Thanks
Tony big heap of manure in the hole . Used to work for me.
Yes but used it all already this year. truck off the rd since before xmas with big end bearing shattered
I love rhubarb...so much that I can sometimes talk it. Nice vid Tony.
Thanks, Its great stuff. I just love crumble :)
Some of rhubarb has gone skinny?
I'm thinking of splitting and moving my rhubarb to a larger area prepared as you have shown me, thanks, I obviously didn't give them enough room.
what is the optimum time of year to split and move the plants?
Wait until just before spring
Do you remove the leaves when planting the crown
What do you do with seed pods at top of rhubarb
I wonder what I’m doing wrong it’s the third year the rhubarb is alive but the leaves get yellow and then they shrivel up what am I doing wrong I just found your video thank you
Careful with the leatherman if it's a locking knife. Might get some questions from the law.
Yeah its ok its legal for me to carry Sorry for the late reply. I have been unwell. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Will rhubarb winter over and thrive in a raised bed? I live in northern New York, U.S. Our winters are very cold.
Yes it will just give it a mulch when it dies back and it will sprout again in the spring
@@simplifygardening Thank you!
I have two fairly large rhubarb plants growing in my backyard. This is the first year that I have grown them, so I am not sure how to cook with them. You mentioned something called rhubarb crumble, which sounds delicious. I don’t suppose you have a recipe for that that you would like to part with, do you? Thanks, and as always I enjoyed your video
500g rhubarb
Rhubarb roo-barbBotanically, rhubarb is a vegetable (it's related to sorrel and dock) but its thick, fleshy…
, chopped into chunks the length of your thumb100g golden caster sugar3 tbsp port (optional)For the crumble topping140g self-raising flour85g butter
, chilled50g light brown muscovado sugar50g chopped walnuts
(optional)
Method
Tip the rhubarb into a saucepan with the sugar and Port, if using. Cover and simmer on a very low heat for 15 mins, adding more sugar if you want. When soft (but still holding its shape) and sweet enough, pour the rhubarb into a medium baking dish.Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the topping, rub the flour and butter together with your fingers until you have a soft, crumbly topping. Now add the sugar and nuts, mixing together with your hands. Scatter the topping over the rhubarb and bake for 30 mins or until golden brown on top. Serve piping hot with a big jug of Thick vanilla custard (see below).
What variety do you grow? I have Glaskins Perpetual and Victoria. Both are sown from seeds and are doing great.
Kenneth Stensrud hi. Itsis in description but mammoth red is this variety
Would it be possible to split some rhubarb now? My grandma is selling her home that's been in the family over 120 years and the rhubarb in the ground 80 of them so I was hoping to split some before it's too late. Cheers
If its in good growth no, leave it until Autumn
I am wondering about how rhubarb does in the heat. We live in Boise, ID, USA, and our winters and summers can have periods of high heat-over 100 degrees F-and cold at -20F. Should I plant in the shade, partial shade? I appreciate your suggestions.
Yeah that would be better in the shade if its getting that hot. we get down to minus -15c here and no issues
Thanks 🙏 excellent advice
Thanks, Lizzie . love your comment :)
Am I OK doing this now July
Did you transplant in the spring or fall
Please update us soon!
Debra I moved these again last year lol I did some work, but if you check out the last video you will see how they are doing its the tomato disease video scroll through that you will see me kneeling beside them
Hi, I'm new to your channel. First year Rhubarb grower. Do rabbits and deer eat the your shoots? I'm planning on putting some type of protection. We have lots of deer and rabbits. Thanks.
Because the leaves are poison they leave it alone. The rabbits destroyed the hostas that were next the rhubarb.
Hi there, i bought a rhubarb plant this year and it produced numerous stalks/leaves and a seed stem. whilst i removed the seed stem, I'm unsure how many leaves/stems i should leave on over winter and also whether i should protect from Glasgow winter rain? Any advise is gratefully received.
Dont ever let them flower as this will use up all the energy the plant has and can kill it. Let all the leaves from the end of june to die back and only remove them when they are dead. Mulch with some manure or compost but dont bury the crowns
@@simplifygardening thank you so much for this. i understand this much better now. you've been a great source of knowledge. thanks
What time of year are you splitting these?
I don't have the garden mass that you have so I am making raised beds ,will this be ok to grow rhubarb and potatoeoes in?
It certainly will Frank. You can grow both in containers if you needed too
Thank you for your videos. My lack of prowess in the garden is such that rhubarb once died on me. I moved about 2 years ago, brought in tons of top soil (that turned out not be great) and a friend gave me their rhubarb and planted it also. When it came back last year it was prolific and big. It flowered and I removed the flowering stems. Although it is growing, the leaves became a haven for snails and slugs and something is eating the leaves (the slugs?) and the lower sticks are rather limp. I removed the snails and slugs. Ought I to feed/fertilise/compost it now?
I will probably have to move the plant in the next month or so (building work). Bad timing! But what are the chances of its surviving and, could I split it at the same time?
I do hope you do not mind my asking you. I have some veg in raised beds and so far so good - because I have watched your videos previously!
give them a high nitrogen feed and make some nematodes to sort the slugs. check out here what these look like in my last video here ruclips.net/video/zpuF5PR2jxE/видео.html and this video will show you how to get them looking like this by getting rid of slugs ruclips.net/video/Gg1cosZY6k0/видео.html
I am a new subscriber, just trawling through your videos, as I am in a wheelchair, I am using pots would rhubarb grow in a 30litre or bigger pot?
welcome to the channel Issy . the bigger the pot the better but yes it would be fine
my rhubarb flowered a couple of years ago, should I split mine plant this year, or have I left it to late
Split it before it gets going
Hi my ground is solid clay in my back garden so I ham growing all vegetables in very big tubs peas, beans ex.can I grow rhubarb in a tub and how big would it have to be. Please can you help me.
Yes, absolutely but aim for something around 100 litres in size
Can I do this in July?
I have had my rhubarb in a large felt pot but it has never taken off after three seasons. I am looking to put it in a permanent in ground position this late autumn, (New Zealand cool region). The main problem has been rust on the leaves. I get something similar on leeks and garlic. Not sure if its the same rust. Is it treatable. Is it a fungous? Please help.
Hi allan. check out a blog post I wrote on Rust as its way to much info to pass here. simplifygardening.com/rust-disease-on-plants/
Simplify Gardening That’s a bloody great article. In NZ we have Yates brand. I got some Fungus Fighter fungicide to mix a spray. It uses Myclobutanil. It seems to have done the trick

Thanks, Steven. How are you doing?
I have a question instead of using wood ash could I use lime
no ronald wood ash is used for phosphorus and lime isnt
Is it best to split in the spring or fall?
Or can it be done at any time... I have a patch that must be 50+ years old and I personally do not know when it was split last.
Hi Tony would my replanted Rhubarb benefit from some chopped up Banana peels now as it is establishing itself and can I feed it a bit of well rotted chicken manure in the fall?
Yes to both Annie. Feed what you like now until autumn and then cease feeding when the plant goes dormant
thanks. both aare doing really well but my cousin was saying how her plant took 8 years to be big enough t harvest some and I would really like to harvest a little next year so going for feeding it well.
If your feeding this year you will be harvesting massive rhubarb next year as will I :)
hi,
could you please tell me if the leaves will be poison in my compost. also could you tell me if it will kill my worms if I put them in the worm bin?
No you can compost the leaves just dont eat them
@@simplifygardening how about the worms?
Worms can eat them
@@simplifygardening thanks mate
The soil looks rotovated. Is that how you got the green manures blended in?
I did on this patch, however its now an no-dig area
I will be splitting mine yoo
Could you please recommend a alternative similar to groganics please i have to relocate rhubarb .
Richard Growganics is just a dried and concentrated farmyard manure, so look for something similar
I was gifted a rhubarb in a large container that doesn't look like it has been cared for.
I fed and mulched it but always thought splitting was best to do in dormant season. I see you uploaded this around this time last year. What were the results?..
They did well. I did have to move them again this winter as they were in the way for deliveries of manure. but they cameback well

Great, yet another job to do 😆 cheers
@@Andrew-eo2cw I am good at finding work for people Andrew lol :)
I never knew you could split rhubarb if it wasn’t dormant! What is an allotment?
Yes has no problem at all John. An Allotment is like a community garden . Its a plot of land broken up into smaller lots. each lot is rented to a family for a nominal amount. They keep that land indefinitely until they give it up.They came about during WW2 when the country had to grow food to survive and they stayed around for people who do not have big enough gardens. My allotment is 185ft x 65ft. so gives me a load of land to grow my own food
If you want one, you just have to ask your local town council here in the UK. If they say they don't have any allotments you can demand they supply them!
