  • Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/Simpli... When we moved plots three years ago I forgot to bring the Rhubarb with us. Today we managed to get that and in this episode, we show you how Splitting & Transplanting Rhubarb For A Great Harvest can really provide you with all you require.
I wanted this one back as it is a very old variety called Mammoth Red and I wanted to continue growing this one. It has enormous stalks and leaves and is perfect for eating and showing.
Splitting & Transplanting Rhubarb Will help me to continue to grow this fantastic variety and by splitting and transplanting it gets a renewed lease of energy that revitalises old plants. With this in mind, if your rhubarb starts to throw a flower spike, You must snap it off or your rhubarb plant will die. I would then suggest for the next season splitting and transplanting it to a different location to continue the plant's growth.

Try using a 'root feeder', which is usually used to deep water trees. It is a hollow sturdy rod with a hole in the end. It connects to a hose, and you jab the end of the rod up to 2ft under the ground and turn on the water - putting the water directly at the roots of the plant. I have used it to water tomato and pepper plants to great success.

Hello Tony, lovely to see your video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I love Rhubarb, I have moved it everytime I've moved and it has thrived everywhere, however, it was put hastily into soil that wasn't right and it really looked bad...stems died away but the crown is intact still.
I soaked it for a few hours and prepared a sunny bed for it to be planted.
I have always removed the stalks altogether planting only the crown.
I am hoping to salvage my lovely plant as it was from my grandmother's garden who had to move in the 1970's, so it has sentimental value as well. Many blessings to you from NZ💞

I love rhubarb... started mine from seed this year and she's pretty big for a potted plant (green composted with crop cover turned into the soil way before growing season started, and given mulch the year before which kinda got turned in... gave it some organic npk mix from seaweed and other stuff, kind of forgot now lol.... after applying microbe teas to my soil last year and using crop cover for compost as I have very limited space, my potted vegetables have been EXTREMELY healthy this year, although there wasn't enough drainage for stuff like garlic/onions I'll be fixing that.
year 2 gardening and loving it, massive crops too at a family garden

Thanks for the education, I've done it wrong until now. No feeding, picked them down 70-80% every year. No wonder it's a very modest rhubarb plant. Why didn't I think it was like any other plant, needing some good old TLC from time to time? Thinking of dividing it and really get it going now. Question: What is the best time of year to divide a rhubarb? You said you didn't split it / bring it when you moved because it was in season...

I didn’t know you can move rhubarb when it is growing. Anyway I moved one root from the greenhouse to the great outdoors. I gave it plenty of muck and filled the hole with water, firmed it in well and more water. It is having a big sulk. Perhaps I should leave the rest until the end of the season. Tony one thing that is easy to make gluten free is crumble, I make mine from a mixture of gf flours.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  6 лет назад

You can move them Wendy but better if you can wait after harvest time, however, I didnt have that option available to me and they will sulk and may even lose what leaves they have while the conserve energy and rebuild the root structure but they will come good. Ive never made crumble GF so that will be new to me this year

Last year, I think around March, I bought and planted 9 plants, only 6 made it. The main site I had had Champagne Rhubarb for 30 years, I think it just died as it was old, and over harvested for wine making. Threw all that out, dug in plenty of my well rotted own made compost, plus growmore slow release granules. Not all crowns grew, I carefully hand dug one crown up, and saw shoots on the underside, seems I had planted it upside down( not obvious to me, as I had a hard time seeing what were old stems and what were roots, some never had any buds on them. I took it to show a friend who knows way more than me. He said go back, plant it the right way up. This year, second year in my ground, one seems to have vanished, so I guess rotted away. The other is in the ground, as I marked the position so I never stood on it when on the garden. It is just a brown stump showing, about the size of a plum, doing nothing, yet my others are 6" tall now with leaves. Being aware that in future I could divide what I already have, should I leave the dormant one to see if anything happens, or throw it out. If I d get rid of it, how many years before I divide the others. I am not too tight to buy another crown, but I am awaiting to see how my crop will do, what yield I get. Last year I never pulled any rhubarb except one or two that had flowered. On the edge of my old rhubarb plot, some of the original plant seems to have grown again from remnants, this is an old plant as my Granny planted the original plant, I don't know when, but she died in 1974. Also with hindsight, if i had left the upside down plants in the ground, would they have recovered enough to be high yielding croppers and lasted many years do you think? Growing upside down seems to be a new habit of mine, I did it with some Conkers too, I thought the shoots would turn out to be the trunks, when I realised and turned them the right way up, they recovered well, and I imagine if kids still climb trees in 100 years time, they will like the nice horizontal trunk for sitting on.
    Best Wishes, Neil, Oxfordshire.

Do you know of any nurseries that sell the Mammoth Red variety?? Ive been hunting and hunting and just cant find it. Short of convincing someone like you to send me a chunk, i have no idea where to find it! There seems to be a poor selection of rhubarb variety in the nursery market... Its almost always Victoria, Victoria, Victoria.

Thank you for your great videos Tony. They are really helpful. I grew rhubarb from seed last year and I have eight small crowns sprouting in pots now. When should I transplant them to the ground as I tried last summer and they simply died. I then saw a video, (maybe one of yours) where it said to transfer them after a year. Should I wait until they are fully in leaf or transfer them now while they are tiny? Cheers from Japan.

      500g rhubarb
Rhubarb roo-barbBotanically, rhubarb is a vegetable (it's related to sorrel and dock) but its thick, fleshy…
, chopped into chunks the length of your thumb100g golden caster sugar3 tbsp port (optional)For the crumble topping140g self-raising flour85g butter
, chilled50g light brown muscovado sugar50g chopped walnuts
      (optional)
      Method
Tip the rhubarb into a saucepan with the sugar and Port, if using. Cover and simmer on a very low heat for 15 mins, adding more sugar if you want. When soft (but still holding its shape) and sweet enough, pour the rhubarb into a medium baking dish.Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the topping, rub the flour and butter together with your fingers until you have a soft, crumbly topping. Now add the sugar and nuts, mixing together with your hands. Scatter the topping over the rhubarb and bake for 30 mins or until golden brown on top. Serve piping hot with a big jug of Thick vanilla custard (see below).

Dont ever let them flower as this will use up all the energy the plant has and can kill it. Let all the leaves from the end of june to die back and only remove them when they are dead. Mulch with some manure or compost but dont bury the crowns

Thank you for your videos. My lack of prowess in the garden is such that rhubarb once died on me. I moved about 2 years ago, brought in tons of top soil (that turned out not be great) and a friend gave me their rhubarb and planted it also. When it came back last year it was prolific and big. It flowered and I removed the flowering stems. Although it is growing, the leaves became a haven for snails and slugs and something is eating the leaves (the slugs?) and the lower sticks are rather limp. I removed the snails and slugs. Ought I to feed/fertilise/compost it now?
I will probably have to move the plant in the next month or so (building work). Bad timing! But what are the chances of its surviving and, could I split it at the same time?
I do hope you do not mind my asking you. I have some veg in raised beds and so far so good - because I have watched your videos previously!

Yes has no problem at all John. An Allotment is like a community garden . Its a plot of land broken up into smaller lots. each lot is rented to a family for a nominal amount. They keep that land indefinitely until they give it up.They came about during WW2 when the country had to grow food to survive and they stayed around for people who do not have big enough gardens. My allotment is 185ft x 65ft. so gives me a load of land to grow my own food
