Nick Cave singing Opium Tea with some images I added- enjoy or not-from:Gord's Poetry Factory at gordspoetryfactory.blogspot.com/ and my website gordscafe at gordscafe.tripod.com/
I still miss Amsterdam and I've only been three or four times. I miss it like a girlfriend you never quite got over. To be honest I expect most of that feeling is just being able to consume the lovely and helpful Cannabis without being looked down on. It was more than memorable....
I graduated HS in 1972, that yr or next (wasn't writing it down), I bought a gram of Opium from soldier coming home from Vietnam. Was told it was from Thailand. Never thought of drinking it in tea, we smoked it! It was the best, but only lasted a week, I been through Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Coke, and others but still remember that OP!
I remember my best buddy 😢 lucked into 80’s mda And we’re damn lucky that the supply dried up because we would Have Bankrupted Ourselves or sold our grandmothers or first born 😮😮😮
About eight years ago, my life went to pieces. Coincidentally, I also discovered this song at the time. in the aftermath of the breakdown, I heard the song again. "I am what I am, and what will be will be" became my motto- probably not the intention of Nick Cave, but that being said, keeping that in mind helped me take all the necessary steps to get my shit together again.
Absolutely ,like he's been 'preserved' in time .I live about 10 minutes from him and I've seen him cutting a dash almost raven like walking by the beach at night .His son died last year climbing by the cliffs ,very sad indeed
completely agree.. bsides and rarities is amazing and this is one of my very favourites on there! but it takes a while to listen to all of nick caves amazing music! and every album is so different but incredible in its own way..
A complex melody with brilliant phrasing and story telling. A lot of hard work must have gone into this song but they make it seem effortlessly cool. Only the top 1% can pull off this trick.
I just saw him and the Bad Seeds in Nottingham Arena, UK a couple of days ago. Blew me away. It was less of a concert than a communion. His stage presence... He was even walking half way across the arena to sing in front of the seated folks towards the end. He ripped up our souls with I Need You, and then pulled us all back together with Red Right Hand. And the encore... He brought maybe 50 fans onto the stage, letting them just dance around. Nick just kept strolling around, crooning along and every single person just moved aside and let the man do his thing, like stepping aside for a King to pass. The security teams were visibly shitting bricks. But they had no need to be because everyone there was on the same page. At one point Nick asked the fans on stage to sit down, which they all did, and the show was ended with one last powerful Push the Sky Away. What was so amazing to me (in a good seating spot watching from above) was that those standing in the crowd were stood there like the Mannequin challenge, almost motionless, just watching the stage in awe for practically the entire performance.
Here I sleep the morning through 'Til the wail of the call to prayer awakes me And there ain't nothing at all to do but rise and follow The day wherever it takes me I stand at the window and I look at the sea And I am what I am, and what will be will be I stand at the window and I look at the sea And I make me a pot of opium tea Down at the port I watch the boats come in Watch the boats come in can do something to you And the kids gather around with an outstretched hand And I toss them a diram or two Well, I wonder if my children are thinking of me Cause I am what I am, and what will be will be I wonder if my kids are thinking of me And I smile and I sip my opium tea At night the sea lashes the rust red ramparts And the shapes of hooded men who pass me And the moan of the wind laughs and laughs and laughs The strange luck that fate has cast me Well, the cats on the rampart sing merrily That he is what he is and what will be will be Yeah, the cats on the rampart sing merrily And I sit and I drink of my opium tea I'm a prisoner here, I can never go home There is nothing here to win or lose There are no choices needed to be made at all Not even the choice of having to choose Well, I'm a prisoner here, yes, but I'm also free Cause I am what I am and what will be will be I'm a prisoner here, yeah, but I'm also free And I smile and I sip my opium tea.
Here he is!!!.....amaizing like always!!!, ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤, when I forget my self and I listen Nick Cave, I see me when young and I get back, thanks for everything...
Used love playing this .....roll of foil little bags of sunshine....so empowering ....then I loved it to much and I gave up trying to catch the dragon n started to chase the instant rush .....hmm how I wish I never met that dragon ....
How are you now? I see a poet within you just from those few words. I'm a stranger that's here for you. Also an artist. I'd be more than happy to spend some time chatting with you. You never know, sometimes you can meet the right artist (exactly like Nick Cave) and things can click into place somehow. Just with the slightly different way to see it all.... The offer stands for anyone that reads this as well that needs it. Come say hello and we can cheer each other up...
I was listening clearly to the lyrics, I just can't believe how accurate this is. A prisoner with no choice, nothing here to win or lose, but I smile and sip my opium tea, hoping to forget all the pain.
CrazyFoxAstral let's sit cross from another on these cushions cross legged and chat about life while I chainsmoke, you can have some too if you smoke, friend.. *smiles as i extend my cup* :)

Nah I think he is right. "There are no choices to be made at all, not even the choice of having to choose" I think that line captures the essence of addiction. People think it is a choice to do what youre addicted to, it really isn't. You are practically hardwired for it and eventually you will surrender to it. The song to me seems firmly rooted in that feeling to surrender.
that'd be the literal meaning yes. no one can say for sure what hes singing about. I personally think hes going deeper than just opium addiction. "surrendering" is a good idea, but surrendering to something bigger and more tragic like life itself.
New Nick Cave song for me. Totally on form. At his best Nick Cave is as good a songwriter as anyone and an awesome performer. Saw him with the Bad Seeds twice in London in the late eighties. Was as good as you can imagine it was.

Thanks for putting this song up. Love these lyrics with their capture of the transience of life, and how we can sometimes take solace in the lightness of our being. The music suits it. Not doubt inspired by Thomas De Quincey... I'm not convinced the pictures go well with this song though....

I can't stop listening to this. Dammit Mr. Cave, you have created some opium for my ears.
Here I sleep the morning through
'Til the wail of the call to prayer awakes me
And there ain't nothing at all to do but rise and follow
The day wherever it takes me
I stand at the window and I look at the sea
And I am what I am, and what will be will be
I stand at the window and I look at the sea
And I make me a pot of opium tea
Down at the port I watch the boats come in
Watch the boats come in can do something to you
And the kids gather around with an outstretched hand
And I toss them a diram or two
Well, I wonder if my children are thinking of me
Cause I am what I am, and what will be will be
I wonder if my kids are thinking of me
And I smile and I sip my opium tea
At night the sea lashes the rust red ramparts
And the shapes of hooded men who pass me
And the moan of the wind laughs and laughs and laughs
The strange luck that fate has cast me
Well, the cats on the rampart sing merrily
That he is what he is and what will be will be
Yeah, the cats on the rampart sing merrily
And I sit and I drink of my opium tea
I'm a prisoner here, I can never go home
There is nothing here to win or lose
There are no choices needed to be made at all
Not even the choice of having to choose
Well, I'm a prisoner here, yes, but I'm also free
Cause I am what I am and what will be will be
I'm a prisoner here, yeah, but I'm also free
And I smile and I sip my opium tea.
