I've planted a lot of moss in my western Canada garden ( Rocky Mountains). The moss is an excellent medium for native woodland plants to grow up to through...especially many varieties of cold hardy orchids. Lady slippers and Calypso orchids thrive in the moss in both the shade and moderate Sun. In dry times I use the mist setting on the sprinklers a couple times a week and in Winter just shovel snow over the moss.

Headed up the hill to my moss garden in Annapolis. Thanks again to my sister, Mossin' Annie, for helping me create the moss tree skirt. Moss is spreading ... I've fragged nearby and now figuring out about interlacing sideways mosses. Another neighbor has offered a rescue project.

Hi! I just transplanted some moss in my yard a few days ago. I didn't really know what I was doing -- thought they must have shallow roots in the dirt, so I took a couple of inches of dirt with me to the new spot. I don't think I hurt it doing that? But now I see it wasn't necessary at all. I did water it in really well and have kept the spot moist. I think I may have seen you years in a video (or even a short film with another moss gardener...or did I dream that??), but I just refound you tonight and am so glad. Thank you so much. I'm really excited about doing more with moss now.

Sometimes you can't avoid getting some soil attached when retrieving mosses... especially with upright growers like Atrichum and Polytrichum which have rhizoids (not roots) that hold them in the ground. --Mossin' Annie

I've been so afraid of trying anything with the moss we have growing around our yard naturally that I only recently started to clear the fallen leaves and stuff in hopes that it would promote growth. But now that I see I don't have to be so delicate with it (which is totally more my gardening style) I am excited to keep tending it! Thanks!

Wow, I found you!!! I am also a moss lover here in the North Georgia Mtns and luckily, we have plenty! What I don't already know, I'm hoping you will teach me. I have a huge rock out back that I have been covering for years and it is beautiful. Would send you a pic but I don't know how.

Hey Annie, another great video! I was wondering, is it only the sheet-type mosses that you finish by walking on them? I didn't see you walking on the cushion mosses, and was wondering if that's because they would be prone to crushing. Thanks for the videos, and keep up the good work! Hey Dave, Sorry for such a long delay in responding. I just found your question on RUclips. I do walk on cushion mosses, too. Wet colonies don't tend to break apart. If it's a large colony of Leucobryum, I might just press hard on it. I've used a hammer when planting "cushion" moss species like Ceratodon in the joints between pavers. Enjoyed the video! I'm trying to encourage moss growth in my shady San Francisco garden. I have a few very small natural patches on some rocks outside. If I send you a photo can you tell me what type of moss it is?
I am not a bryologist so I am still developing my ID skills. Some moss species look dramatically different from wet vs dry. Also, sporophytes are key botanical indicators of genus/species. I get lots of inquiries and can't keep up with the volume. hi thanks for sharing ..i was wondering if it would be successful if i were to poke holes around and put small plugs of moss in the holes in an area say 5 inches apart and water it in ?
Hi Annie, I found moss growing in a sunny part of my front yard this spring, I transplanted them around my pond and between flag stones with enough soil it was attached to. I have been watering it and stepping on it. Will it live in the new spot I put it in which has full sun?
Tiana1 -- Since it's been a month since you posted, and I've been so busy with my professional mossin' activities, I am hoping that you now have an answer for yourself. Choosing the appropriate moss for the sun exposure is key. Watering and walking on moss helps the rhizoids attach. I hope you have been pleased with the results. If you want to transplant the moss off a roof, do you have to make sure they are upright. Or can you just sprinkle the moss around the area.
I'm doing a living yard for my dollhouse indoors. I really want to know what I'm doing before I do it. I know for sure I need more help with it.
You will need to MIST your indoor moss garden every single day to keep it thriving. -- Mossin' Annie
We've moved to a house that has moss naturally growing in the front yard. About 60 percent coverage. But I still have grass over the top. How do I remove the grass to let the moss grow more and get more coverage. because even in the rest of the 40 percent I see moss underneath. Can I just mow it low until it takes over or do I have to kill the grass?
Hey Annie - hope you're still around to help us newbies:) HELP! Second time I've ordered moss from Tennessee nurseries. First all died:( Just got second shipment of carpet moss. Came in big ziplock bag; I watered it and now what? They don't give any help on care:( Sun, shade, lots of water, agrrrrr....Advice - this stuff is expensive.
Where do you find good mosses to buy in sheet pans?
I use a broom instead of a rake.

Hey Jo Jo, You can plant mosses at anytime during the year. I particularly prefer planting in the winter but most of my professional landscaping projects end up happening in the spring and summer months because that's when most people think about gardening in general. Bottom line, plant anytime you want, preferably in the rain or just before a rain storm. Good luck! -- Mossin' Annie

Hey Anai... Glad you like my RUclips videos. I live in the mountains of North Carolina -- Pisgah Forest NC US. This video demonstrates moss gardening methods in brief. It is a very small section of my front yard which is entirely moss now (about 1650 sq ft). I even dug up grass to plant mosses. I've experimented with all types of substrates and moss species. --Mossin' Annie

Question? Are your favorite tree redbuds?
Since I do love purple, you might guess that Cercis canadensis (Redbud tree) would be my favorite with its early season blooms. But, if I have to choose a favorite tree, it would be a Acer saccharem (Sugar Maple). The fall display of colorful leaves is so spectacular. -- Mossin' Annie
Can you grow moss on mulch?
Once you get it established, does it spread pretty easily?
Hey George, It really depends on the moss species. Sideways growers will spread horizontally. For upright species, the distribution of new moss areas is dependent upon the success of spore dispersal. -- Mossin' Annie
You en outrage to walk on the moss?
Not sure of what you mean by your comment. It doesn't hurt mosses to walk on them. It helps rhizoids to attach to the soil.
