Yuliya great idea! I love how you recycled the stone and that you always think of the wildlife. The patio is gorgeous and no weeding because of the moss. Cant wait to see the plantings you do at that project.
Wow! I would love to see this little circular seating area once it's finished with all the perennials and shrubs planted. Something tells me that it will only look better as the years go by and the plants start to mature and settle! Great job hun, stay safe!
I have been doing this for years since I keep finding tons of Moss in my shade area's . I tuck the Moss between slabs of Stone, Bricks, Rocks and its so low maintenance . It always look nice. Thanks Yuliya !
@@ydoyougarden oh I get it for sure! I have a very thick kneeling pad but have trouble getting down and back up😂 thank goodness I can still bend over, rough on the back but I make it work😂
I'm so excited about this project. Looking forward to updates. I've been mossing different little areas in my garden and it really does spread so nicely. It does grow here on its own too, so maybe that's why, but still, it always makes me smile.
Hello! Wow! A house built by Frank Lloyd Wright! That is a gem! I can't wait to see the circular seating area when it's complete. Thank you for taking us along! :)
Oh my goodness - you inspired me and I spent 3 hours harvesting moss in our back woods and replanting it between the stone steppers off our deck that can’t seem to grow grass. Fingers crossed that it roots in!
I hadn’t really thought about the spacing needed in between the stones to accommodate the moss until you mentioned it. The patio is beautiful! I’m looking forward to seeing another video or two highlighting transition throughout the back yard 🌱🐿
Hi Yuliya! I love that stone area with the moss. We have a small walkway that we filled with stone and I planted moss in the crevices. Some of it was too hot for the moss, so I planted the steppables plants there. I like the softness it adds. Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful. The late Helen Stoddard, who had a very famous flight of moss steps designed for her garden by Fletcher Steele, used to water her moss with beer! I’m told buttermilk is also good- the acidity is beneficial to the moss.
My backyard has a lot of moisture....so I get wild growing moss. Like you, I pulled up some pieces ( like a carpet...very easy), put them in between my brick pavers. It grows very easily...and is a great look.
I have moss growing between my stones on my patio as well. I did leave the center that the fire pit is on without moss as the heat will kill it off (ask me how I know). The moss grew naturally in my yard a couple of years ago and there wasn’t much of it. I took half of it and broke it down, added water & yogurt to create a slurry and poured this in some of the bare areas between the rocks. It took a summer for it to fill in but looks pretty now.
Aww, I can almost see fairies and elves frolicking around on this magical patio! It looks beautiful! Yes, please do show us how it looks with the shrubs around the perimeter! 💚🥰 Linda
Hi Yulia. Thanks for taking the time to educate a new gardener like myself. I really appreciate the details you give in your videos and step by step instructions. I have a question for you, I put diwn some palette step stones in a muddy area under my tree and I was wondering can I grow miss between them? They are about 4" apart. One more thing! I realized, thanks to your video, that I have a star magnolia growing in my backyard! I never knew what kinda tree it was until you identified yours in your video. So thank you for that. 😊
Hi I thought that was absolutely fantastic yes I quite agree with you cause when I looked it to I thought sakhi same thing it looked like hes been down for years it looks great the stone and the most of good together you done a very good job keep up the good work and I fully enjoyed watching your video thank you😍😍❤❤
So beautiful! I haven’t figured out yet how to keep little chipmunks from digging it up before it takes hold but would love to create a space like this ❤️
It really has softened the area up. I get moss growing on my stone walls. We get rain in autumn, winter and spring and the moss looks gorgeous. We get really hot dry summers and the moss gets brittle and turns brown but it always bounces back in autumn I presume between cracks in a patio it would do the same?
In this spot it will be green most of the year except maybe for a heat wave. This patio is on the northern side and also shaded, perfect spot for moss 😊
It looks so beautiful. I picked up some thyme for an area that I have with pavers because I have too much sun there. How much sun do you think moss can take? Can wait to see the platings around it.
I think it depends on zone and humidity/rainfall of where you live. All day sun in the rainy pacific NW. 5 minutes in the Nevada desert. Here in CT, about 3 hours based on my backyard.
@@willaerley7140 that’s so true. We have too much heat here in GA so that’s why I went with the thyme for the sunnier area. I used to have a long path that was all moss, gorgeous. But we had to remove some trees so it all slowly went away. It’s hanging on in a few spots. I really love it.

I would have the cherry tree removed for fear of falling and the roots busting out of the new stone circle but I cant wait to see how it looks with moss. I got so much around here but idk what I can do with it in my garden but it surrounds my hostas
I love love love this affect. BUT.......we have a flagstone patio I tried to do the same thing with and the squirrels, skunks, or neighborhood cats dig it up every single night. We've sprayed with Repels All with no results. So frustrating. After years of trying everything, I'm ready to try small gravel even though it is not the effect I want. Any suggestions?
I have a real problem myself with squirrels and chipmunks digging up my bulbs (also plants in peat pots or smaller seedlings) After a few years of failures, this fall I decided to try and create a cage so that I could let the bulbs grow long enough in the spring that they would be left alone. So far so good. I used a number of plastic rose collars (about 10 inches high) that snap together staked in the ground as a barrier and chicken wire mesh over top tied on with garden wire. Perhaps you could construct a similar temporary barrier around the patio (or several ones in different areas depending on the size). After a few weeks, I imagine the moss would root in and no longer be such an attractive nuisance for the beasties. I understand that they get curious about any ground disturbance thinking that some other animal must have stashed food there. Edit: since moss likes the humidity so much, maybe putting clear plastic storage bins upside down over the planted area, weighed down with bricks or stones would work well.
@@Ibis333 Good info. Thank you. We're thinking of removing what moss they haven't dug up already and putting down pea gravel, but that has the problem of being scattered with foot traffic, etc. We may redo the flagstone and start over with something new. Spring will tell.
Thanks Yulia, love the moss, can you do a video on how to start moss? I have a great stone area I would love to have moss growing. Semi shaded to mostly shaded? Stones are there and I have Creeping Jennie but I would rather have moss. Does it require a lot of moisture? In Texas we have high humidity in the summer it can be up to 75% humidity and 98 deg and higher! Breathtaking sometime! Would the moss need to be watered at that point?
If you have moss growing naturally anywhere in your area then yes! Our moss goes dormant and fades a bit (still green just lighter) in the summer but bounces right back in fall, winter and spring. Water sure helps!
