  • Progesterone can cause weight loss or weight gain depending on the situation.
If you are interested in losing weight while taking progesterone you will want to make sure you are doing 4 things:
Make sure you are taking bio identical progesterone.
Make sure you are using progesterone correctly (through the transdermal route).
Make sure you are taking it at the right time of the month (days 14-28 of your cycle).
And make sure you are not using TOO much for your body.
This guide will walk you through who should use progesterone for weight loss and who should avoid it.
If you use progesterone in this way there is a good chance it will actually help with weight loss.
Using progesterone if you have normal levels of progesterone may lead to weight gain and other symptoms of progesterone excess.

I’m 59 years old next month. It’s like the medical profession ignores any female that wants a healthy body and only caters to females in their breeding years. I’m accused of eating 24/7 by my internal med doctor and that is why I have the extra weight. It took me 2 years in my late 40s of not starving myself to lose 80 lbs. I’d have to starve myself to keep myself at 128 lbs. I’m on my feet lifting weights 40 hours a week so it’s not like I don’t move my body. Gaslighting by the medical field is real.

True: the answer I get is: you need to train more, eat less, stop the sugar: my answer is: I do not overeat, I do not eat sweets, I do not eat, I starve myself on veggies and dinner skipping and cannot lose any weight, I am crying all the time out of frustration. But the medicals laugh it away, think we are liars who overeat all the time. - my solution: drink 2l water, take Berberin, take Vitex agnus-castus (pls look into it, it helps me soo much, I feel much more calm no anxiety no mood swings) great for menopause. and I started progesterone cream 2x a day. I start losing weight now, but I also still eat 1200 kcal a day, not more, so sweets. I am so hopeful to get my life and body back!

44 years old, perimenopausal & taking 200mg oral progesterone every day to help with sleep. I was afraid of gaining weight, but it did the complete opposite. Stubborn weight just dropped off. I stopped the progesterone for a couple weeks because it was making me moody, but wanted the sleep benefits and restarted it. Same thing happened. Never been this low of a weight in years. Dropped 4 lbs in a week and now find myself underweight. Weird to me that all these women are gaining weight. I’m also low carb and no dairy last 4 months. But as soon as I threw progesterone into the mix, stable weight dropped like a rock. So strange how it affects people differently.

We are all different, imagine my surprise when (not related to progesterone) I had a horrendous hormonal acne , androgen sensitive and they gave me a pill that served to lower the testosterone and to chemically CASTRATE men. Well it was super efficient on my acne but instead of lowering my libido It did the exact opposite. Embarrassed, I went to the doctor immediately, and she said I had a rare paradox effect as every human is different! I lose weight on the contraceptive pill and never had any issue of libido or mood swings etc.

Different mineral shell create different hormones and minerals help the systems and liver for transporting hormones. Minerals have to be in ratios with each other like hormones and these ratios indicate the level of functioning of systems like digestion or thyroid or liver etc ect

I found out myself that vitamin K2 is very helpful with endometriosis during menstruation pain. When I told my doc. her answer was: I know....but why didnt you tell me to take K2? She just laughed. I have taken hormone replacement for a Long time but not religiously.
I feel like I need them alot now so I am using creams vaginally and topically on my skin
Hormones are such a delicate dance and if they are off we suffer greatly.
Losing estrogen could cause your pelvic floor to fall, Do not let that happen.
Losing estrogen makes you age faster too
    I wish I didnt look 66 at 56yo
I warn my daughter about all of this stuff
I wish my mom knew enough to warn me.

I am fully Menopausal, have mild PCOS, Insulin Resistance, High Stress/Cortisol, and my Naturopath tried topical Prog on me for YEARS, but tests revealed it wasn’t raising my levels for some reason(s). She said some patients just aren’t Good Absorbers. We tried a pellet, but I couldn’t control the dosage (plus it was a constant flow from the pellet which can cause wt gain). FINALLY she put me on BioID oral Prog (titrated the dosage over several months - tested serum levels regularly). She CLAIMED upon my query that the BioID oral stuff doesn’t affect the liver at all. But I still use Milk Thistle just in case. I have Insomnia, so the oral stuff helps put me to sleep (esp. if taken w food). All seems to be helping, but I might try taking a small break a few days a month.

Even without pills, i can have mood swing .
I tried to discussed my concern with my doctor for other options.
Which i learnt there are progesterone cream and hormone shots
    1. Hormone shot - He said the side effect will be worse than Visanne
    2. Hormone cream - it will not work. That what i have is ovarian cyst, it is inside my body not on my skin.

So i opted to go with a progesterone only IUD. The weight is coming off and I don't have progesterone running throughout my body. I only need it in my uterus to protect it from uterine cancer while on HRT. This was a great choice. Its been a couple of months now . Staining is gone and weight is almost back to normal.

I did just the opposite and never had problems with a combination patch (climara pro consisting of estradiol o.45 progesterone 0.125) however my estradiol level was still low so I tried increasing the patch to 0.6 but it only comes in this dose without progesterone. I was given progesterone 200 orally and the nighttime started. Fellow bloated , gaining weight like crazy while doing the same supper healthy diet and exercise as I always did or even more. It does help sleep for sure but it made me groggy and very moody. I started researching progesterone and it is a very common problem. Many women can’t tolerate oral progesterone!
I stopped taking it and all symptoms went away after 3 days but I am stuck with 5 pounds weight gain which came out of nowhere. I have been in menopause for 5 years and didn’t have weight gain because I really focused on even better diet than ever. Different story with oral progesterone…

I’m hoping for some advice. I did saliva hormone testing and my estrogen was right around the normal range, just under it, and my progesterone was just bottomed out. Barely there. My cortisol levels were perfect and my dheas was pretty low. My symptoms are severe swelling in my body, everywhere. It’s constant but is worse around period. I have upper lip hair growth, enlarged pores, enlarged breasts outside of pms and muscle weakness. The symptoms started after I gave birth 4 years ago, it was not too bad at first but has progressively gotten very bad. I even get very depressed and eating disorders around my cycle. I’m not sure if the severity of these symptoms is normal in low progesterone? I’ve been on very strict and clean “diets”(I don’t like that word, I just focus on nutrients and whole foods)and exercise regularly but it has not helped these last few years. I look healthy otherwise and no one would know I was suffering as hard as I am. My body is visibly smaller and my measurements are smaller yet my weight is almost 20 pounds heavier from all the water retention. Some people don’t believe my weight because I’m pretty small and the water retention isn’t visible to others who haven’t known me as long as my husband and family. I do feel at times I don’t want to live because I struggle so much with this and the doctors haven’t been able to tell me what is wrong. I want to wash my hair without having to stop several times, I want to wear shorts without feeling awful, I want my hair to stop falling out, my breasts to stop hurting and feeling so enlarged, I could go on and on. I’ve been miserable a very long time. I’m only 28 and feel much older.

Great videos. Some people do not absorb the cream well transdermally and so it doesn't alleviate estrogen dominance/low progesterone. As you mention, oral micronized progesterone (bioidentical, compounded) is better for insomnia and apnea issues. According to my doc, this may be because the cream has a larger molecular structure. I have heard that it takes a few cycles for progesterone to work and alleviate symptoms. Is this your experience? This is all so tricky. Depending on fluctuations, it could cause weight gain one month and weight loss another!

LJ Fogel , I use a natural bio identical progesterone cream. You need to rotate where on your body you apply the cream weekly or it doesn't work. Also, you need to give your system a rest for a day or two from applying the cram. Oh , I forgot to tell you apply the cream on the non fatty areas of the body. Such as the wrists, inner elbows , face, behind the knees and soles of your feet. Anywhere you can see your veins. Will not work on the stomach, buttocks, legs etc. Hope you find that helpful. I get mine from bhnformulas.com.

Dr. Childs stated synthetic progesterone can cause weight gain and the studies would be posted. I don’t see them. Plz share them here.

I cant get my Dr to write for Progesterone til I see her again and it is 6 weeks away. How do I determine my dose if I buy the OTC cream? It has helped me sleep, my anxiety and I feel better. I was taking 100mg Prometrium round capsule daily. I ran out. I dont have a period since ablation 9yrs ago. I dont know what days 14-27 are. How do I know when the 14 days I should actually take it? What about the other days Im not taking it? I dont sleep as well when Im not taking it.

I use the brand “NOW” wild yam progesterone, purchased off Amazon. It was recommended by my midwife for low progesterone levels during pregnancy also as a preventative for miscarriage. OB recommended a synthetic form. Midwife put me on a plant-based form.

I’m 55, on estrogen patch to be taken with 50 mg progesterone, I chose transdermal oil. The problem is my body still cycles - weekly! Sometimes a drop of blood, often not, but the period-like drop is momentous. So, right now I’m 2 days a week off, 3rd day start increasing until a BOG cry announces a ‘period’. The issue is Ann I’m taking enough? No one talks about the ideal ratio in this case, and my hormones still go up and down. Shall I follow the ratio for bleeding women or HRT ? I surely could lose a few pounds, but also when I take too much it gives me headache, so I have space it out throughout the day 🤔

The information presented here is conflicting with other obgyn sources: The weight gain, PMS symptoms and breast tenderness are associated with raise in progesterone levels, not with excess estrogen, as presented here.

Two things! I'm taking body identical hormones, both estradiol and micronized progesterone prescribed by my "conventional" physician, so your statement about the Rx from this source being synthetic is false. Second, progesterone molecules are too large to pass through the skin, so if one of your patients is on estrogen and is using a "progesterone cream", the estrogen she is taking is not opposed and she is at higher risk for developing cancer.
