A couple free hints for those looking to play the game:
    1. Don't underestimate the knife, and don't just carry one as an escape tool when an enemy grabs you. Lickers, in particular, really don't like getting slashed with them, and you can always drop a zombie on its back with enough headshots, leaving it vulnerable to slashes while grounded. They do eventually break, but they break faster if you use them to break free from grabs, so try to slash whenever you safely can to get the most out of them. You can unlock an unbreakable knife by finding and destroying certain objects in the world, 15 of them to be exact. Keep an eye out for them, and an ear if you have good headphones.
    2. Headshots can be effective, but only if you let your crosshair shrink. Your shot will not only be more precise, but it'll do slightly more damage and I think it'll have a higher chance of exploding their heads for an instant kill. This is to encourage a style of shooting where you stand still and aim, just like the original games.
    3. Mr. X does not like flashbangs at all. Lickers don't either.
    4. Speaking of those guys, they're also the most reactive enemies when it comes to sound. Mr. X can hear you running when you're in the same room as him, but otherwise, it takes gunshots to attract him. Lickers can hear you running and they're very fast, but they can't follow you into other rooms, and you can walk past them as long as you don't touch them. They'll technically hear you walking, but they merely crawl towards you in search of you; don't freak out when they snarl and turn towards you, because they technically haven't found you yet.
I could go on, because I've played this game almost as much as RE4; it's highly addictive, and unlocking the infinite minigun and infinite rocket launcher feels so good :)
EDIT: RUclips decided to add extra line breaks. How nice of them -_-

    • @davecross4493
      @davecross4493 5 лет назад +3

You don't NEED the knife. I've only done it on hard (didn't bother with normal) and got through it fine. I just ran a lot (and crept for lickers). When I did an A+ run, I learned to use it on Birkin, but that's all really (except as a defensive item).

    • @Ryan-kb8ui
      @Ryan-kb8ui 5 лет назад +27

And 4. DO NOT JUST USE ONE SAVE FILE AND KEEP OVERWRITING OVER IT, you'll inevitably die, you'll fuck up, it's ok, but, it's possible to screw yourself and save after you used up all your ammo on something you'll come to realize you shouldn't have, maybe you didn't understand one of the boss fights til all your ammo is gone, the game will resupply you but you can make your life easier by reloading a section and doing it the right way

    • @punishedgondola1814
      @punishedgondola1814 5 лет назад +8

Yep, lickers can be stunlocked with the knife, and the old let zombie come real close and blow it's head off with the shotgun trick still works.
I don't think Mr.X managed to hit me more than once due to me studying his habits properly, in the end he is very predictable.

That’s because they weren’t originally going to be implemented in the game at all. They were added last minute because the toxic RE fan base were complaining when they announced at E3 that there would be no A and B scenario. Capcom added something just to please fans, and people still complained. I actually really enjoy second run, it changes things up enough to make it feel fresh. And since all of the story content was in both campaigns, there isn’t really a lot more they could have added without adding completely new content, which would have been hard since they were only 7 months from release.

James M wanting a game to have two scenarios where you only get the full story by completing both isn’t toxic if it’s a remake of a game that had that in the first place. That’s called wanting it to be faithful.

  • @Dreadjaws
    @Dreadjaws 5 лет назад +66

6:57 - Well, you can target limbs, which are much less resistent than heads, in order to cripple zombies. Blast their knees off and they won't be able to move as fast and well. Blast their arms off and they won't be able to grab you.
8:38 - Combining red and blue herbs gives you a temporary boost to your damage resistance, so there was _definitely_ a use for them and that's why you have so many. With less room to move around and more chance of being grabbed by enemies, having a resistance buff prepared when venturing into a zombie-filled hall is much more useful than hoping you get to survive without wasting all your healing items.
I do agree that the lab is a bit too short of an area, and the identical scenarios are bullshit. That's a real missed opportunity right there. And we're missing William Birkin's dog form! That's a real shame.
Still a spectacular game, and I feel a constant itch to replay it again and again. That's the sign of a classic for me.

The REact or whatever that further mutates them into Crimson Heads (I wish more games than REmake 1 had those) is the logical endpoint of this for most zombies.

Honestly, I didn't like how disconected the scenarios felt. In the first game, it felt like you were playing a single story, but from a different angle, finding the other characters where you'd expect to find them after playing the first scenario, seeing somewhat the consequences the other character had on the enemies, maps and scondary characters. In this remake, it just feels like you're playing the same game all over again, finding the same enemies in the same places, doing the same stuff and going through the same routes, but interesting enough, finding different stuff in the same places (like a grenade launcher where it was supposed to be a shotgun). In the first game, you'd find the character's weapons and equipment in different places, so you could feel each one of them were surviving the same place, but through different routes.
Overall, I just felt like I was playing the exact same thing with a different character, and it was kind of a bummer

Another area where the remake stumbles IMO is the enemy variety. I was really looking forward to seeing the evolved licker, more so than the regular licker, only to find that it wasn't even in the game at all. Same thing goes for the moths and the ivys, who now only has one type.
Other than that I completely agree that the biggest misstep is the fact that the story is actually less coherent than the original. If you're going to include the A and B scenario, you need to commit to it. Otherwise I would have preferred to just have one campaign for Leon and one campaign for Claire.
This is indeed a great game by itself, but as a remake it kinda falls short. In a way this is actually the complete opposite of the RE1 remake, which took everything from the original and expanded on it. This seems more like a reimagining which, speaking for myself, is not what I had in mind when I said that I would like an RE2 remake. I don't mind them shaking things up a bit, but I think they went a little to far in some places. Oh well, I hope Capcom will take these things into account with the RE3 remake.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. Great review and keep up the good work.

Shooting the body part does give advantage, especially for speedrunner, 1-2 bullet at the knee, you can outrun any typical zombie.
    For leon:
Shotgun can generally pop out head with 1 bullet and 1 shot dog, don't save much on the ammo of shotgun, just use it.
Magnum can be situational, usually more recommended in 2nd run.
Flamethrower is the most effective to defeat the 3rd stage of birkin.
Grenade and flashbang should be mostly save for last battle of mr x.
    For claire
The basic handgun should be use with speedloader, but if got dlc gun, much better until get to parking lot to get claire hp3.
The grenade launcher flame round very effective at one shot zombie, use it wisely since no powder can create the flame round, but don't be stingy.
Acid round 1 shot dog, best use as well to shot anywhere at 3rd stage birkin.
The mq11 is situational, also much better use at 2nd run.
Sparkshot oneshot licker but only do this if one licker in the area or if they are farther from each other. It also make the second stage birkin easier.
Grenade much more effective for stage 4 birkin, flashbang should not be an issue for claire as she does not really need it much.

No goddamn joke. This game was damn near flawless for how it managed to re-capture the spirit of the original, while also improving on it in every conceivable way. I got every single achievement for this game and unlocked every item, and legitimately loved every minute of doing so.
Accurate shooting is still rewarded but they didn't want to make headshots the undisputed king, so there is no damage multiplier for them. (At least, not on zombies.) Instead, a headshot on a zombie has a small chance of being a critical hit which instantly blows their head off. The chance is never very high, but the possibility of killing a zombie in a single shot, or just a handful, is so good it's often worthwhile anyway. More to the point, leg shots are extremely effective on zombies, often staggering them and sometimes blowing their legs clean off. In wider areas, reducing a walking zombie to a crawler can make the place dramatically easier to navigate while being easier than killing them outright, and even in tight areas a downed zombie is much easier to deal with than a walker.

One thing you may have missed: blue herbs are FAR more useful in this version. Not only do they cure poison, but when combined with other herbs, they provide defense as well. A blue+red herb combo, for example, will massively increase your defense to the point that an otherwise near-fatal attack suffered will do next to no damage to your character.
Needless to say, blue+red+green is the most useful, providing a full heal PLUS a huge defensive boost (and cures poison as well).

Agreed massively with one of your critiques specifically - the pointless 'second scenarios'. They should have just left it at 'Leon's playthrough' and 'Clair's playthrough'. I was so disappointed that nothing changed when you reversed the order.
Ironically, Zombies are the toughest enemies in the game. I learnt quickly that going for headshots with the pistol was a waste, but I disagree that free aim is pointless. This is where free aim shines. Pistol is for knee capping and dodging, then you get the shotgun to kill all the zombies you need to (ergo why I think Claire is 'hard mode'. No sgotgun, no flamethrower).
And the only time i killed lickers was when X was giving it to me and sneaking went out the window.

7:04 going for the legs is sometimes the safer bet than headshots. It also traps a zombie in whatever room they wander into so if you’re not traversing it often you can keep them there. Additionally dodging an enemy with no legs isn’t much of a problem if you leave them in traversed areas.
Of course I still went for headshots often. It does higher damage to the zombie overall and 2-3 shots generally causes them to stumble. Keep shooting at the head while they’re in the ground. Also a benefit to taking out the legs is it’s easier to shoot the head when they’re on the ground.
8:29 - this game does something different with blue herbs when combined with red and green herbs. It gives you a higher defense. It’s stated in one of the files but there’s never really a tutorial about it. If you take a mixed blue herb combo it allows you to take a lot more hits (I feel like at least 3 times as much if not more). That’s why you were struggling at the end combining them all was essential and makes the game much easier lol

6:51 Shooting them in the head rarely works. The best thing is aiming for their knees. It will either drop them on the floor, forcing them to crawl the rest of the time, or at the very least stun them long enough for you to move forward. That's clever design - as everyone who has played RE4 would aim for the head.

    Honestly best remake ever made.
7:00 also this isn't true. Using precision shots gives you an increased critical chance, and you can de-limb zombies by shooting them in their arms/legs. The way to dodge zombies in this game is to shoot them in the leg with your pistol until either the leg literally comes off or they visibly stagger, then run past them. These games have always kind of rewarded multiple playthroughs too though. It's hard to know which zombies you should and shouldn't be dodging on a first playthrough.
I don't know if you or anyone else here is interested in like speedruns or no damage runs, but if you are you should check out CarcinogenSDA's no damage runs of this game on his channel so you can see some higher level strats like the above mentioned in action.

Here's hoping Sega takes notes for that rumoured Sonic Adventure remake, where it's take the base game and build upon it, rather than the 1:1 remakes we've been seeing recently with Shadow of the Colossus and the Crash trilogy. But yea more like Resi for Adventure's remake (Sonic being more like Resident Evil, now there's something I bet you didn't expect to hear in the same sentence)

Fantastic new take on a classic game. I didn’t care for the dynamic difficulty or the fact that you couldn’t simply run around the zombies without paying the metal-jacketed prerequisite of a bullet to a zombie knee. There are quite a few high points such as the graphical details, fluid character movements, and the fresh yet nostalgic atmosphere, but for brevity’s sake I won’t go into them.
Mr. X did make me chuckle and was quickly relegated to meme status as opposed to his original purpose of increasing player urgency. I still much prefer the difference of taking in a virtual world instead of constantly taking it on. All in all the game is a great example of what modern updates/remakes should be. Nice review, you besottedly clever fiend!

REmake1 is the best Resident Evil also, to be fair Critical, That while not directly rewarding accuracy DOES reward patience and not panicking as when you focus in your shots(the accuracy increase when standing still) you actually do get a 50% damage bonus. I really wish the game explained focus shots better and made the benefits more clear. You can also completely avoid the west hall/corridor wing once you get the bolt cutters and you unlock the shortcut, I believe you only need to go into the corridor 2 times in the game, and only once on scenario B

My only two gripes with this game: lack of variety among scenarios (the classic did it better), and lack of interaction between Leon and Claire. While there admittedly wasn't THAT much in the original, there were a few more parts where they met up. And considering this time around they decided to inject a bit of flirtation between them and the hint that there might be a budding romance at the end (Sherry ships them), it would've been nice had they been allowed to interact a bit more than they did.
Other than that, this was a REALLY great game. The new sections were welcome, the recharacterization of the characters was welcome (Leon wasn't nearly as much of a dope in this and never quite bought Ada's BS), and the overall game experience was fun as hell.

9:52 Depends on the puzzle. The three-dial puzzles like the lockers and medals can be solved pretty easily by quickly running through one combination at a time. I kept unlocking these long before I found the clues.
I only needed clues for the dial safes and electronic locks.

Blue herbs will also provide a temporary increase in defense as well.

Targeting different body parts does have its uses. Shooting the head sometimes gets a 'critical hit', popping the enemies head so you know they don't respawn. Shooting kneecaps dismembers them so they can only crawl, making it much easier to get around them.
It's rarely a good idea to ever use a green herb on its own. Green mixed with red fully heals you. Blue herbs can be mixed with red herbs to give you a 'health shield' reducing damage recieved for a short period of time. Mixing all three colors together will fully heal you like a first aid spray and give you the shield.
As for the Ivy's (plant zombies), you can shoot those orange sacks to make them stumble, giving you an opportunity to run past them. Take all the sacks out and they'll fall to the ground for a while.

I was 4 years old when the original RE2 came out, so needless to say it totally passed me by, and once I finally got into horror games, Resident Evil 6 was just coming out, sooooo yeah, wasn't exactly the best first impression when I had scary games like Amnesia and Dead Space to play instead.
Now that the remake is out and I've earned my Plat, I can happily say it is one of my favorite games of all time. :)

We need to have a serious talk about your drinking. :(
Great review. I didn't have the same problem you did with the shooting and ammo limitation though. The aiming felt spot on,(I particularly love the weighty way zombies recoil from head shots) and the game does indeed reward accuracy. My only big gripe with the game(besides the similarity in Claire and Leon's scenarios) is wayyyyy too much Mr X in B. He went from being terrifying to tedious.

Hey Drinker! I’m rather late to the party so maybe you’ve already learned this by now, but the blue herbs have an extra feature in this game. Not only do they cure poison, but they also give your character a sort of shield for a limited time, allowing you to take hits without damage. Very useful in a boss fight when you’re near death. 👍🏻

Resident Evil 2 for the original PlayStation was my favorite entry into the series and I thought it would never be topped. It represents the perfect sequel and gives the player so much while showing reverence to where it started. Yes, there have been other titles in the RE series that have come close to the zenith that RE2 was but for one reason or another they fell just short of the goal. Resident Evil Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 were very close. I even prefer the original Resident Evil 2 to the GameCube Remake and that was fantastic.
Oh but things have changed in a very big way. The first was seeing Capcom finally go back to their best and remake it from the ground up for the 8th generation. The day it dropped I was never more happy to own an Xbox One X and a high end 4K UHD for the experience of a lifetime (it's amazing on the Series X and PS5 as well). The Resident Evil 2 Remake replaced the original as my defacto favorite of the series and I thought...that was that. Flash forward to last week on a Friday when I picked up two copies of Resident Evil 8: The Village...it is so damn good that it has topped the second game in my all time favorite list. Review it Drinker and I'm quite sure you will love it.
Addendum- We (fiancee and I) are both gamers that play side-by-side every night after work. She is playing Resident Evil 8: The Village on the PS5 *physical and I on the Xbox Series X. Jaw dropping, stunning, and drop dead gorgeous are words that do not come close to how incredible RE8 looks in 4K@60fps HDR10 w/Ray Tracing on. Further, it has the gameplay to match and is an amalgamation of every great title in the series thrown into one amazing package.

Great video drinker. I do have one criticism. The game does actually reward accurate shooting. But you gotta focus on leg shots, and arm shots. Shoot one leg off, then the arm on that side. Zombies can open doors, and have a hard time grabbing you.

Takes me back to been 10 years old and my uncle letting me play this on his PlayStation, soon got mine and was nowhere near clever enough to get far, same with number 1. Then going going back to it a few years later and completing it. Damn the memories a game can bring back is weird. Like when I play tomb raider 3 I get a craving for coke a cola, Cadburys carmel bars and quavers.

    Movie remakes bad".

I wholly disagree. I can count the number of video game remakes that were a genuine improvement on one hand and I don't even need all 5 fingers. Most remakes completely butcher the original tone and art style of the game they're trying to remake.

Good review, but some of your complaints arent true, theyre just you not understanding the game properly. For example, at 10:25, you complain about the first floor corridor, but you dont need to take that route as you can clearly see on the map you have open. From where you start in the main hall, you can enter the door to the west office and leave via the door opposite the safety deposit room, bypassing the entire corridor. You can also go through the second floor library and get back to the first floor down the stairs beside the darkroom. And thats if you cant be arsed to board up the windows.
Secondly, your complaint about health items. The blue herbs arent there to cure poison this game. They give you a shield that makes you take half damage. Youre supposed to use blue herbs before boss fights etc so that you dont need to use as many healing items. By the end of the game I have about 20 full healing items in the chest.

I really liked it, the only thing I really miss about the original when I was playing, was that eerie, 90's piano music. Never realized how big a part that was to me until it was gone.

Actually firing at the legs is the way to go. This gives a stagger and you can run past, Blowing them off is also good. Head shots do slight more damage.,, Red and blue combined is pretty strong shield. Just as useful as a full herb via hits before healing

Looking forward to when they do Code Veronica.
That will be the last one of the main series they haven't updated since RE4 changed their formula for the camera and some of the mechanics.
They could do Outbreak too. That game in some ways was frustrating but fun. A bit ahead of its time. I think it could work well now.

I would say having limited routes when traversing the police station is actually a good thing. It adds to the survival horror aspect of the game and encourages some tense, quick decision making once Mr. X shows up. You'll usually only have a couple options for getting where you need to go, and odds are one of them has some windows you forgot to board up, and the other has a licker or two. And Mr. X on your heels means you have to pick one of those shitty options and hope your ammo and healing items hold out. The Mr. X segment of the police station was my favorite part of the game.

Ay. Ya probably figured this out by now, but the blue + red herb combo reduces incoming damage, which does help with the conservation strategy. I like that about these games, having to decide what creatures are worth the risk of dodging because you might have to cross them again.
The ratio between green and other herbs is pretty tight in this game compared to the first, though. Barely any opportunities to make a double-green without thinking "shit, did i need that?"
I do appreciate that you can shoot off limbs. Another thing that makes no sense but works for a video game is your damage is actually stronger when the crosshairs narrow.
Wish they'd bring back Crimson Heads.
