I don’t care what anybody says, this is one of the greatest hip ho tunes ever be created. It’s got the funk, soul, sound, feel, lyrics, story and moral the lot, the epitome of 90s hip hop.
yes sir!!!!.....and people get jealous too. i think thats whats going on with some of these rappers that r gettin killed......like Young Dolph n others.
I grew up on R&B, Soul, Funk, and Jazz. I listened to Rap, but not much. Once Rap artists began sampling Blue Note, Impulse, and Verve Jazz music I got hooked.
Back when this song was big (still is in my book), rap still had meaning and told a story unlike today all they rap about is their dicks, pussies, and how much money they steal, complete trash like you know "Cash me outside girl" 🤦♂️😂
They are, in the hearts of the true hip hop fan. Nothing the white man can approve for hip hop has credibility. He’ll never feel the soul of a people!!!
I heard this track by mistake a few weeks ago. I have no clue how this dude was never mentioned as one of the illest MC’s. His voice and his bars are sick. No lie he is right up there with Nas at this time and era, IMO
If you were in your teens in the late 90's on the east coast and listened to hip hop you definitelly would have known gangstar...they had some big hits that played on mainstream radio. search some of their other hits from the era like; "take it personal", "mass appeal", "dwyck"
True Crooklyn classic! that story was so relevant to the time and place, little dudes was hungry always lookin for a come up to be the next street legend. It never ends well.

As a 14 year old kid all I wanted to do is get a rep by robbing a chain….not by starting a family or owning a business and house but by doing something negative….and this was the thinking of 7 out of 10 people I grew up with 💯 …… the power of music 💯
Good to hear you straightened up and was flying right. I was in 22 or 23 when this joint dropped, hanging with dudes that stole at least 3 cars and motorcycles every weekend. They robbed the pancake house and jewelry store. We werecat the club one night and they all put there chains around my neck while th fought a group of other guys. I put my back against the wall cuz I was standing there looking like Slick Rick with a neck full of dookie gold chains. I finally decided to distance myself from those dudes.
I’ll be 84 and annoying my grandkids with this shit. Just imagine what hip hop will sound like then. It’s already terrible now! I checked out in the early 2000s except for a few quality artists.
MTV 2 used to do this thing called Hip Hop Month every October back in the day. They would play this and many other Gang Starr videos constantly, that's how I got introduced to them. Then the song B.Y.S. from Daily Operation was in the video game GTA: San Andreas, on the station Playback FM hosted by Chuck D. After I heard B.Y.S. I became a huge fan and had to cop all of their albums 💯💪🏾
I found GangStarr just a little late, but they are definitely an important part of hip-hop culture. Rest in peace Guru, your legacy is well respected. Peace.
This song along with the Message by GMF are 2 of the most timeless hip hop songs ever made. It was happening then and it’s still happening now. Proof the streets never change. RIP Guru🎉

Absolute masterpiece/masterclass of a hip-hop/rap song with a meaningful message! Guru and DJ Premier were a hip-hop/rap music dynamic duo! Memories of me as a little kid growing up into a young teenager 1990s, watching/listening to this music video of a rhythmic opus/poem on Video Music Box, Ch.31 afterschool! God bless the soul and rest in glory to the late, great; Guru! God had to add him to his ultimate music and real dude collection in heaven!
The lyrics and story telling in this video is the bomb plain and simple. I remember this song from back in the day but it's not a song that I became to familiar with. Listening to it whilst watching the video (for the very first time) really drives home just how good a story teller Guru is.

Skillful story telling, that is what hip hop today lacks!

Today’s music lacks creativity like Guru had. He sounded like himself n nobody else. Miss these dayz

This rap speaks volumes, pay attention to the lyrics. What he rapping about is what happened to Nipsey Hussle.
Maybe now, some of these guys know how dangerous it is, of trying to take what isn’t yours. What people do to others, is gonna be done to them.
