Anywhere near Auckland airport is nasty. The food, the workers, the public..best advice is when your land get out of there asap. Also too many tourist in that area so most aren’t likely to be kiwi. I know you already returned back home by now but I hope you return back and explore more down the South Island.
The last two times I've been back home (Auckland) I've noticed so many people were just miserable, esp in hospitality.
Me and my mate are allways saying how shit NZ is when we in Auckland. The minute we go past the Bombays it's like "oh man this country really is beautiful".

The signs in the washroom are because we have a lot of Asians and South East Asians now visiting New Zealand and many are not familiar with western style toilets, It is not common for them to use toilet paper. Saves a lot of extra work for the cleaners who work at the Airport and shopping malls. On You Tube there are guide videos on how to use an Asian Squat toilet.
