      MIDI map -
      - Hit midi button on top right corner
      - Mouse-click a button you want to control with a MIDI Controller (in her example, they’re little triangles that appear in the middle of each column while midi mapping is active. You can see them when she says “map this button here”
      - Tap the button or turn the knob on your midi controller. Small text should appear on the computer screen next to the button you’re mapping
      (Repeat the previous two steps for each Ableton button you want to map. Click Ableton button, tap midi controller or turn knob, look for text to appear)
      - click MIDI (top right corner) to exit MIDI mapping mode.

    I've been looking for a sensible looping workflow since Ableton 8. I use Ableton Live as a conventional DAW, around 80% of what I record are live instruments. Guitar, bass, drums, vocal. This is the best workflow I have seen so far! Thanks so much for posting this video, it has changed my templates for the better!
    My only request from Ableton has been for preset loop length. I record with a standard drum kit, and it's very difficult for me to click a MIDI mapped pedal separate from the kit, it's distracting. I wish there was a way to pre-select the loop length, but I haven't found a good way.

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  Год назад +1

      Awesome! Glad it helped 😁
      I totally agree about preset loop length. The only way I know of is with the Push 2 controller “fixed length”, but my issue with that is, I don’t always do the same length loops for different instruments in the same song. Some are 2 bars, some are 4, etc

    • @contatotaiveroto6017

    Ok this is the smartest way I’ve seen this done -
    So at 4:20 ish
    1. The ‘Guitar’ channel is set to IN but isn’t armed - it’s essentially just a monitoring track
    2. the Guitar Loop channels are then armed one at a time, set to Ext In and input is OFF, ‘Guitar’ this means that monitoring signal isn’t doubled.
    3. Global quantize (at top of screen) is set to 1 BAR which means loops will cut cleanly at the bar line
    One question, do the audio clips loop back round automatically? Or is there a PREF or global setting that needs to be selected to make that happen? Thanks!

I was just wondering if it was possible to be able to hit the pedal once so it moves to the next track and records straight away, rather than having to hit it twice.

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  8 месяцев назад

      Oh yes. Ok this is the main flaw I’ve noticed with session looping. You have to wait like one loop before you can start recording the next track… usually it’s not that big of a deal because it gives you time to figure out what you’re going to record next, but when you already know what you’re going to loop, it’s kind of a pain and slows down the loop buildup.
      You could experiment with the Looper in Ableton for specific loops that you want to overdub quickly, but I found it hard to keep track of Looper and session clips together. It’s like you need to choose one or the other form of looping… if you figure it out, make a tutorial for me please! Haha

    Hi! I noticed that in the final demo at the end of the video you have your audio for the three loop tracks coming in from external input 2, rather than the “guitar” track like you’d instructed earlier in the video. Was this intentional? If so, why? Also, what are you using to trigger the loops, a foot controller?

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  Год назад +2

      I see what you're talking about. Good catch! I didn't realize in the video but it does say Ext. In 2, so that means the audio was coming directly from the input on my audio interface rather than the guitar track as I instructed earlier. Either way would work, and I'm not sure why it switched to Ext. In 2 to be honest but the difference is that if it's coming from the "guitar" track, it will retain the audio effects on the that track (EQ, Comp, etc) without having to add those FX to each individual "looping" track. Using the "guitar" track as the "Audio From" should save CPU usage because you only add the FX to one track, rather than repeating on a bunch of loop tracks. Hope that helps!

  • @DanHarville

    How did you set the length of the loop? Can I use this method to do an entire song? Say, lay down the guitar, then bass, then banjo, then mandolin... then jam with vocals and violin, or something like that... ?

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  2 года назад +1

      The only “fixed length” loop I know of is by using the Push. It has a button for it, but if I remember right, it only work for midi loops like drums. I hardly ever use that feature.
      Yes this is the method I use for looping full songs

    Dear Ableton, please add Audio-Overdub for Clips, Thank you. (why on earth isn't it a feature yet? gods ways are truly mysterious) Thank you for the video! I have a question: Do you know a quick way (which can be achieved while live-playing, without much mouse-clicking) to adjust e.g. Guitar recordings to fit perfectly on the count 1? I mean, you might never have this issue if you have zero latency and play perfectly. But in my recordings i often times see that the first transient of the recorded audio signal doesnt perfectly match the beginning of the bar. Is there some sort of audio-quantisation possible to automatically drag the first transient to the absolute zero-starting-point of the loop ?

    • @SpectacleMusic

      you can with the audio effect "looper"

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  Год назад +1

      I second this with clip overdubbing! Ugh. To answer your question, that does happen to me sometimes! You can do it on the Push 2, but I usually just quickly use my mouse to manually correct it. It's inefficient and looks kinda bad so I usually just hit "undo" with the push or Ctrl Z and re-record it. I don't know of an automatic way to do it unfortunately.

    Hi! Thank you for the video. I'm just confused how you are switching tracks, arming the track, starting the record, and stopping the record. Are you hitting 1 pedal with your foot to do all that?

      Same question. Did you find out how to do it Steve?

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  Год назад +1

      I do use the Nektar Pacer for switching tracks (I mapped it to each track). But you can do that with any midi controller, or even your keyboard if you want.
      The track arming is actually something I set up in the preferences. See this tutorial for that: ruclips.net/video/sZ8pe7I3C-M/видео.html
      You just midi map the track launch button to whatever you want (in my case, I mapped it to the Nektar Pacer) to start/stop recording each individual track. I show it at about 4:30 in the video. If you have auto arm set up, when you switch tracks and hit the track launch button, it will start recording in the clip of whatever scene you're on.
      Hope that helps!

      Hmm I do 96 for the buffer size and 44.1khz for the sample rate. It depends on your computer though, it’s kind of a trial and error thing to find the best setting for your setup

    How do you listen to your live audio? Also how do you send your audio to OBS?

    • @Justine-Griffin
      @Justine-Griffin  2 года назад +1

      I set the master out in ableton to 7/8 and 3/4 for the cue out, then just make sure both of those are playing in my headphone output in my Focusrite interface software. But make sure that the cue out is muted in the Focusrite master out so the audience doesn’t hear it.
      I use an SPDIF cable to loop back the audio in the interface and and just select that same 7/8 that I did in ableton in the OBS audio input. Hope that helps!

    Hey, how do you set the tempo? I always have problems with the first loop. If I don't have a klick in my ears it's not satisfying. If I choose the looper of Ableton I can set the tempo by the first loop. But it's complicated to work afterwards. How do you solve this?

    • @Justine-Griffin

      The tempo is in the upper left of the screen. You can set it manually or tap tempo. Then just make sure the metronome is turned on (it turns orange) and hit play for it to start the click

      I plug it into the interface. Honestly you could do either. I just find that my mic picks up a lot of noise around the room so it’s probably cleaner to just plug my guitar in and have it separate, but I’ve never tried the mic

    • @Justine-Griffin

      Put your effects like reverb, delay (or other effects/plugins that you use across multiple tracks) onto return tracks. That limits the amount of places that the plugins are at. Hope that makes sense!
