When patients have scoliosis, they are often concerned about knowing if scoliosis impacts other areas of their body. One common area of concern is the bladder and its function.
There is something called neurogenic bladder dysfunction that directly results from the impact of scoliosis in the body. The symptoms associated with this type of dysfunction are:
    Urinary incontinence
Urge to urinate more often than needed
    Reduced urination
There are two main ways the bladder can be affected when a patient has scoliosis. One is related to the nerves, and the other is related to direct physical pressure.
The first one happens when the nerves that send the signals to the bladder are affected. The signals that control urine are impacted, causing patients to feel the frequent need to urinate. It can also create weakness in the bladder, and patients will sometimes be unable to control it as part of the symptoms.
The second one happens when scoliotic curves are too large. It causes a bigger compression because everything sinks in together in the patient's spine, creating direct pressure on the bladder. This physical pressure can lead to incontinence and the urge to urinate more often.
Certain curvatures like those in the lower thoracic spine or lumbar spine could produce these symptoms in a patient. This is because the lower the curve, the more likely it will affect the bladder.
There will be certain scoliosis types that are more prone to affecting the urinary function in a patient:
-Idiopathic scoliosis - rarely affects urinary function.
-Congenital scoliosis - can sometimes affect the bladder depending on the location of the curve and curve size.
-Degenerative scoliosis - this often affects the bladder, especially when the scoliosis is located in the lumbar area.
-Neuromuscular scoliosis - this always affects the bladder, and these patients often develop neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
Regardless of the type of scoliosis, the more severe the scoliosis (40 degrees or greater), the more likely it will be to affect the normal function of the bladder.
Curves always start small and progress into this severe curve that can later cause bladder issues, among other problems.
For patients having bladder issues with scoliosis, the number one thing to do is address its cause: the size of their scoliotic curve. By making the curve smaller and increasing the length of the torso, pressure is removed from the nerves, which in turn allows the bladder more room to work properly. This may reduce the symptoms, and eventually, patients could regain normal bladder function depending on the severity of their curve.
It is important for patients with scoliosis who do not have bladder issues to be proactive with their treatment and not allow the curve to progress to avoid ever having bladder issues in the future.

Thank you for this video, it has really helped me. I’m 30 and have quite severe, unfortunately untreated scoliosis. I currently have virtually no pain with my scoliosis but developed a constant pins and needles sensation in my feet + lower legs 12 months ago. The last two months I have been having issues with urge incontinence too. My doctor wants to do a pelvic exam looking for lumps etc which I’m extremely fearful about and would prefer not to do unless absolutely necessary. I wanted to ask if it’s likely that scoliosis could be causing my symptoms. If it is scoliosis are there any stretches or self help techniques that I could try myself to improve my symptoms? I’m based in the uk and unfortunately it’s extremely difficult to get curve / scoliosis reduction treatment here. Would pelvic floor exercises or cycling help the bladder issues as this is something I’m thinking of trying? Any advice would be very greatly appreciated!! thank you 🙏.

I still do my own shopping and depending on how much I must do it really tires me out, plus bring in my groceries my back on the left side will really start to have pain so bad I tend to lean-to the left and forward. If I overdo I am in pain throughout the night. I use my moist heating pad and ice pack. I take no meds. My Ortho doctor just recently prescribed a mild muscle relaxer to be taken as needed or 3 times a day. I haven't taken any as I don't necessarily want any chemicals in my body. I have also done the Stroth method and physical therapy. I go to my chiropractor once every 3 weeks. I am lax on my homework of exercise. In the spring and summer I try to do my gardening I can only last about a good half an hour. I start to hurt on my left side and can feel a swelling and tightness. I must stop and rest and continue when I can but not same day I will use an amigo sometime while shopping however I try to walk as much as possible using my shopping cart for support to help with my posture, but even then after about 20 to 30 mins pain starts to occur. Had x-rays done today the last one was in 2021. At that time my curve was 30 thoracic and 45 lumbar. I am a senior over 70. I do get tired of going to PT 2 times a week but I know I must do this. Unfortunately I live in a house with steps 13 altogether, my bathroom and bedrooms are upstairs, that can be very challenging. I have been following you and Dr Lee on RUclips for approximately 4-5 years which has help me understand scoliosis, combine with my readings and talking to my chiropractor and my Stroth therapist. Today at my x-ray the tech had me open my mouth to take x-rays didn't understand that do you know about that procedure. Anyway thank you for your vids and sharing your knowledge I have also purchased 2 of your books.

Yes I am doing the same the good news is from 2021 to now after my 2023 X-rays my curve has not progressed hardly any according to my Orthopedic doctor. My chiropractor wants to see the x-rays so I will be taking them to him. I feel I have a very good chiropractor and quite knowledgeable. Ii do wish I could get to Florida but unfortunately I can't. Well Stay blessed and good luck with the crooked spine lol. Gotta find some humor to cope

I did ask my Orthopedic why I had to open my mouth for some of the X-rays and he said the same thing as you have said, although I did answer my own question I needed to know was I thinking correctly.
Thank you for responding to my question.

Is it possible for scoliosis to affect ED I’m 28 years old been having horrible Ed / frequent urination my entire life. They have done every test and can’t find any thing. Now I’m looking into this sometimes I have lower back pain.

There's limited research on a direct link between scoliosis and erectile dysfunction (ED) in otherwise healthy men at your age. Scoliosis typically affects the spine's curvature, and ED usually has other underlying causes.
