In this week’s episode, explore a unique home nestled in El Nido, Palawan.
Discover a 1,500 square feet residence built on a 1000 square feet footprint, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Designed by architect Justin Guiab, the home exemplifies a harmonious coexistence with nature, featuring open spaces and humble materials like wood, clay, rammed earth, and concrete.
With no distinct main door, entry to the house is fluid, inviting natural light and ventilation. The design follows the land’s natural slope, enhancing the connection with the outdoors. An open layout combines kitchen, dining, and living areas, anchored by a large multi-functional table. This communal space not only fosters practicality but also promotes unity with its surroundings.
Thoughtful elements abound, from the water source to sustainable building practices.
Water sourced from a nearby spring, rich in minerals, serves the household needs, while a pocket garden with swamp taros aids in natural water filtration. The roof's cogon grass insulation and oculus design reflect local wisdom and sustainability, ensuring comfort and longevity.
Throughout the home, simplicity meets functionality.
The bedroom features minimalist furnishings and indirect lighting, echoing natural ambient light patterns. In the bathroom, a carved rock basin stands testament to craftsmanship and connection to the land.
For architect Justin Guiab and his family, this home is a sanctuary.
It's a place where design meets purpose, where every detail echoes a commitment to living in harmony with nature. Join us as we explore a space where thoughtful design and natural beauty intertwine seamlessly.
As always, special thanks to the homeowners opening up their home to us.

Justin is an incredibly talented architect and remarkably humble. He is also blessed with a beautiful family-Sarah and Janu. Wishing you many more projects in the future so that you can continue sharing your talents with others, Arch!
Justin's talent and humility shine through. Best wishes to him and his lovely family indeed! 😊
✨🙏✨🙏✨🙏
So many aspects of our lives has been “westernised” & “urbanised”, it’s so nice to actually see you seek inspiration from your roots for a better, fulfilling way of living. God Bless you and your loved ones.
Beautifully said! Embracing our roots truly enriches our lives.
As an architect I Love the open plan & uses of filipino indegenous materials. My main concerns:
the lifespan of organic materials & the infiltration of mosquitoes, termites & insects.
Absolutely, blending indigenous materials with modern design is inspiring!
This house is so soulful
We're glad we managed to bring that out of the home!
This house deserves an award
It really does
I think the same, because it is so cost effective!
“Nakikitira lang kami.” ❤
What a beautiful way to end the video 😊
❤❤❤
This changed my view on design and architecture. It's like its own genre in design making. ❤❤❤
I guess you can call it traditional Filipino home aesthetic 😄
I’ll be dreaming of this for the rest of my life.
Same here! It's unforgettable.
Maybe it's just me but watching the video makes me so emotional. For all the right reasons of course. It's just the built composition is so well thought and Justin spoke to the place, the house, and anything in between to ensure there's harmony and unity between the dwellers and the surroundings. Isn't that lovely?
idk why I was moved to tears while watching the video. This house truly embodies peace and tranquility ❤
Glad the video brought out such emotions, it's really touching
The ammout of thought and length s you went to to study the land and wind, before building was true dedication 👏.
Gorgeous property for you all to enjoy 😊.

Always glad to show you such amazing homes 💯
You live the dharma in your everyday life. Fate will be kind to your family. This mindfulness will bring in bliss and positivity into your home. However, the best thing I got from this video is the value of co-existence that you teach to your son. He will grow up grounded in humility and experience life deeply connected to nature. A house of beauty and minimalism!
Beautifully said! Mindfulness and values truly enrich a home and family :)
This is by far the best home I saw on RUclips that is suitable in a tropical climate.
Absolutely! It's perfect for the Philippines.
because they used building techniques and materials that our ancestors have used for thousands of years

This is so nice! As someone who lives on the same island and is looking for inspiration when building a home with the same principle, I am so happy to have found this video!
So glad you found this! Perfect inspiration for your home. 😊
Wow, I feel a lot calmer than I was before watching this video.
Totally agree with you! Just watching the home makes you feel at peace 😊
they never really talk about how the house fares during the annual monsoon season
This area is rarely reached by typhoons. And if it rains, they just probably stay in the bedroom and let the water in the open areas just like in the olden days.
He did mention that the house is well-oriented and the roof lines are low enough to keep rainwater away from the interiors.
Beautiful home, beautiful family, beautiful life🌳
Thanks for your kind words! Beautiful indeed 😊
After seeing this , I am so inspired to go back to my village n have such a home

めっちゃ最高です
Now I know who to hire in building my mountain top dream house.
Excellent choice 😊
I am building a house on Talikud Island as a foreigner. I can't own the land, so it is in the names of my two Philippino daughters. Nice house and I agree about the none native trees. If you want to fast, choose Bagrass. My house will be radically different.
Sounds great! Best of luck with that 😊
wow
Mind blowing 🤯
Wow this is really having a Filipino vibes house, and that rock tub it's a vibe,so cool,I want one😅
Absolutely! Such cool Filipino vibes! 😊
Ganda! 👏👏👏❤
#architechworks
#tatakJustinG
Absolutely! So ganda 🙌
i love how he took local wisdom on how to make the roof too. and ensured to use native wood instead of non-native. this is how good architecture should be.
Embracing local wisdom and materials is key to great architecture.
My dream life . New fan here....
Welcome! So glad to have you here 😊
I hope there is like a follow up, i am really curious on how does the house withstand typhoon
Wonderful house.
One quick question: How do you handle mosquitoes, insects, and other animals like snakes?
Thank you.
Nice
Thanks 😊
❤❤❤❤❤
beautiful mommy
Beautiful mommy and a beautiful family and home! 🌟
❤❤❤
It's beautiful alright, but how do you deal with 1. mosquitoes especially its annoyance and the ones that carry malaria 2. termites on the wood and bugs that eat the thatched roof 3. Cockroaches which is endemic in the Philippines 4. Snakes that roam around at night 5. houseflies everywhere especially where there's food 6. other bugs like scorpions, assassin bugs, centipedes, etc.
❤
What i don’t understand is why they roam around barefoot but they have a split type airconditioning installed. How natural
Being barefoot is common in the Philippines 😊 especially near beaches or rivers 😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What about in bad weather and tropical storms??
Nice but I wonder how they handle the mosquitos
Great house!!! I have one word though - 'bugs'. :)
Nature does come with bugs. 😅
Hindi ba malamok?
How do they deal w strong typhoon in the philippines though? This might be quaint but as an architect there are other things to consider..
