I think his lack of dynamic singing is more due to the fact that he was never trained to sing and this is what he can do naturally. Having said that had he been trained to use his voice to its capacity might be surprising on how much farther he could have been.
Nobody records drums and their singing...at the same time. The drum sounds would bleed into the vocal mic. So..where do you get the idea that Ringo is playing drums and singing at the same time??
I honestly wasn't expecting this. Ringo is really more talented than most people think he is. I'd love to see this for Brian May and Roger Taylor as well.
That was truly the biggest surprise I got by listening to the Beatles channel! I was like damn Ringo can sing! And has a lovely baritone voice! My mom didn’t believe me until one day she heard one of his more dynamic songs and was surprised it was Ringo it kind of makes me wonder what it would have sounded like if John and Ringo had a dual lead...that might have been interesting....
Ringo has a lovely tonality to his voice. I was in hospital at 3 months old having some sort of scan, and to keep me still the nurses put on an audio cassette of "Thomas the Tank Engine - Told by Ringo Starr". Apparently I was transfixed by his voice! Ended up loving Thomas, then real life trains, and later on listened to the Beatles and became a massive fan because "the Thomas man" was in the band.
Carl Wilson, too. The man smoked like a chimney and somehow maintained an angelic voice his entire life even while he was dying of cancer. Dennis was no slouch either, even after he got punched in the throat by a bouncer in 1974.
Ringo is a badass. I really like his voice - but then I’m a huge fan of all the Beatle’s voices. He’s got some great vocals in his solo years. Especially Weight of the World. Some great songs. And his drumming well… I wish he was in my band :)
Ringo is one of those singers who had an interesting voice in his youth, and it only got better with age and experience. His tonality in the ‘90s and ‘00s is absolutely lovely; check out “I Think Therefore I Rock ‘n Roll,” “Give Me Back the Beat,” “Free Drinks,” “The Other Side of Liverpool,” and “Liverpool 8.” His albums _Old Wave,_ _Vertical Man,_ and _Ringo Rama_ are also well worth your time.
I always thought of Ringo as having a distinctive vocal, but with quite limited range. You've opened my mind up to how much potential he had. I think he could have also been a decent pianist judging by his chops on the Get Back doc.
Thanks Marc your insane you did all the beatles!!. For me personally Ringo was a great singer, he even overpowered Paul in Carry That Weight which is so unexpected.
When you think Beatles, not many will think they're underrated (when, in fact, they are if you really understand how f-ing crazy Sargent Peppers was at the time and how it has basically influenced directly or indirectly every record since its production). But Ringo has always been underrated. He was left handed drummer playing a right handed drum set. His timing was impeccable. We tend to think of rock drummers as loud but Ringo's thing was always more jazz than rock in the sense that he saw himself as there to provide a steady tempo. In that regard, he was really, really good. Then, we he finally releases his solo albums, they topped the charts.
My friend I would just be so happy if your covered brad delp from Boston. What an amazing voice and he reaches some incredible highs! Not an underrated band but a VERY underrated singer. When you isolate his vocals it’s really mind blowing what he achieved. Another suggestion is CJ snare from firehouse, they are not like an A list band but if you start going into more of the B and C list bands then he is a great one to check out. Cheers from Florida!
Yeah just like I thought Boys's great vocal performance by him. I always love when Ringo singing in the background with other members like "Carry that weight" (I don't know if he's singing low part at the end of Maxwell Silver Hammer) Also love his raw energy when he shouting most of the time. Like "I'm the greatest"
@@CrazySinging the Beatles are great but Yoko is one of the worst singers I have ever heard in live. She always does that abstract art music where she's just moaning in a very annoying and weird way for like 20 minutes while other musicians play instruments really badly to make it worse. its literally the worst music I have ever heard. You can just search yoko ono abstract art music on RUclips to see what I mean.
What amazed me is, not so long ago I was watching at a live performance of Octopus Garden from a few years ago and his voice was almost the same as the one on the album. Hey the guy is 82 years old! Wow
Ringo is the most underappreciated Beatle. Everyone's like "oh yeah, John's the soul of the Bealtes, Paul's the brains, George is the guts" or whatever and oh yeah "then there was Ringo, who was the drummer". No! Ringo was the substance, or maybe the glue, or the foundation, or whatever metaphor you need to come up with to illustrate the one who holds it all together. And I think maybe he didn't even realize this at the time, but looking back it clear as day that that was his most important role.
I don’t know if your analogy truly works. I will say that it’s easy to overlook and to underestimate the actual depth of the talent on the Beatles because of The likes of Paul McCartney. Paul is such an incredible musician in every possible way. The guy seems to excel in every instrument he picks up and has an incredible ear for lyrics and for melodic tones. Because of this it’s easy to overlook the true depths of the talent that surrounded him! In fact some times I think he probably took that for granted himself. People are surprised when I say that Ringo would have made it big without the Beatles. Certainly they made it easier for him, but he is such a talented musician in his own rights! Watching him drum is like watching him dance it is beautiful. He can sing wonderfully and has such a rich tone without any true effort at all! He has learned the piano and guitar as well though his skills in both are significantly more limited than the others in those aspects. His understanding of what drumming is supposed to be is natural and harmonious with the song that he supports. His instincts on what a song needs and not to supersede this shows an amazing sense of musicality and this is something that he does just naturally. Then he has such an amazing voice that was never fully utilized in the Beatles which is truly a shame. Sometimes I think the song yesterday would sound better with Ringos voice opposed to Paul’s because I think the lower tonality and the depth of his voice would have sounded amazing on that song. Maybe that could happen! And the comedian who said that Ringo was not even the best drummer in The Beatles and that attributed this to John Lennon truly did great harm to the overall outward perception of Ringo and his talent. I am always continuously surprised by the amazing qualities of Ringo and The Beatles were truly blessed to have him!
Any chance of doing one of these types of videos on some of the beach boys? e.g. Brian and Carl Wilson, Mike Love. In my opinion the Wilson brothers (especially Carl) have some of the most angelic vocals in rock history.

It's good that you picked some lesser known Ringo songs for this video (like Fiddle About and Going Down from 'Old Wave'). And i think some of his best and remarkable vocal work were on Ringo the 4th album. He just reached another level there
I think Ringo's voice is strong, not trembling, and he can shout an sing aggressivly ("Drowing in the Sea of Love") and with personality ("Hopeless"), sadness ("Without Her") etc... Also he can do some good spoken word with his deep voice ("Only You" and on this track he seems to sing with a different voice). He has a small range but he used it quite intelligently.
Really loving your channel! learning a lot about my fave vocalists. Would be really interested in one about Damon Albarn (gorrilaz/blur). He has such an interesting voice and sings such lovely songs :)

Fiddle About was written and sung by my favorite bassist John Entwistle from the Who (for the album Tommy as Pete Townshend wanted him to do so due to childhood trauma). Do John Entwistle! He's a fabulous rock bassist but wrote some macabre tunes for the Who and sang quite a few of them. I play bass but wanna learn to sing so I find this interesting, I feel my range is limited and nasally but honestly that can be worked with. Sometimes it's not about being a star but suiting the song.

I listened a few times thinking this might be the case, but there are a few things that make it seem like Ringo. First, the "ooo" doesn't sound like it switches to someone else, it sounds like the same guy, at the same mic, at a consistent volume, singing the "ooo" in between other phrases. The phrasing is just way too natural to have switched during a live performance. But the main thing is that Ringo's "ooo" doesn't sound like Paul's. Paul's "ooo" is stronger -- it almost sounds like a whistle. Ringo hit the E5 surprisingly well, but not as good as Paul.
I love youtube because it's the only place I consistently find people who enjoy music as much as I do.
Same pretty sad somehow
Ringo has a good voice as long as he stays within his range, he is NOT as versatile as the other three but is very talented.
I think his lack of dynamic singing is more due to the fact that he was never trained to sing and this is what he can do naturally. Having said that had he been trained to use his voice to its capacity might be surprising on how much farther he could have been.

Ringo has that tone to his voice that noone else has and that is hard to even describe..

Glad you mentioned the song Boys, Ringo plays the drums and rips that song apart, his voice is great on that song!
It took 2 takes for Ringo to record Boys. And he was drumming and singing at the same time (yes, in the album version)
