I personally really enjoyed it, and I thought the opening was in-character, because they thought they'd be able to handle it and rationalized it as "going out on a high" with a nice Christmas meal and party with the family, but then as the reality slowly starts to creep in, they realise that death will always be horrible, and the façade drops.

I wish I'd listened to this before I settled the family down to watch Silent Night on Christmas Eve! I did mostly enjoy it but I was depressed for a good 24 hours afterwards. The little boy was perfect casting and I gasped out loud at the ending.

I found it interesting. These rich middle/upper class folk kill themselves than rather face the end. I wonder what a poor family in Croydon would do?
I would laugh if the end of the world never came and the only people who survived were the poor/lower middle class people and all because they faced the hardships of the world and this strengthened them.

honestly how mark become a known film critic when he doesn't even understand or analyses the films properly. He says the film has caricature characters. Some of them are caricature, true, but not all. The film's running time is 90 minutes, there are 12 characters and we watch their last 12 hours in one single location. You don't really expect from the film do some psycho analyses of each character with great depth in this premises right?? As the film progresses the story focuses on Art, Sophie and James and the dilemma they have. The film is asking you " what would you do if you were in this situation ?". Mark climes, only really characterr is Keira's character. Disagree with that as well. Lilly- Rose Depp, Roman Griffin Davis and Sope Dirisu were good and their characters were also relatable.

Silent Night wasn’t funny enough, wasn’t heartwarming enough when it could have been, wasn’t dramatic enough.. it had a good premise but it was executed poorly. It worked as being a depressing film. That’s about it. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, but I really hated the ending.

      I agree with you 100%.
The concept was intriguing but the execution was dreadful.
The characters were poorly developed (some even stereotypical), the drama scenes were either too subtle or too extreme, the "comedy" was horrendous and the social commentary was insulting.
It did manage to remind me of a film that did exactly what this film was trying to accomplish.
That film being "Carnage" a dark comedy/drama about two couples trying to resolve the trivial conflict of their sons.
It is also, mostly, filmed in one room, though it balances comedy and drama excellently.
I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in a somewhat similar film more nuanced than "Silent Night."

In the grand scheme of things it's not a terrible movie, but the moments of comedy that crop up after the turning point towards the darker themes are very jarring and out of place.
In general though, the comedy elements kinda fell flat, there's some genuinely bleak moments, but a lot of missed opportunities.
On another note, why is this film so hard to get to watch in the UK? Cinema screenings are sparse and it seems from Mon 6th that Apple's platform will be the only streaming option... bizarre.

And the last shot of this film almost tricked me into thinking it was quite a deft, jet black ending that works, only, given from what we'd seen previously and knowing the effects of the cloud....just NO. 👎
