Loved this elevated film review!
What an elevated comment.
I have to say that I had no idea what Elevated Horror was until Mark mentioned it.
Elevated horror; like "High-rise", or "Terror at 20,000ft"?
I'm surprised to see a lack of even a superficial, surface level comparison to Julia Ducournau's 'Raw', right down to the awakening of latent hunger/burgeoning womanhood during what's ostensibly a hazing ritual, both of which involve the ingestion of meat as the trigger
I was looking for that comment!
Because the movies are totally different and countless movies are about things like that. Carrie is about her magic getting more and more charged by blood exposure. So you saw two movies with similar plot points. Big whoop.
1:01 PINECONES!!
3:54 OHHHH
Nice to see a comparison to 'The Witch Who Came from the Sea' and Millie Perkins. Forgotten masterpiece.
I haven't seen the movie but this scene is totally robbed from "Raw": the girl raised vegetarian "for a reason" who tastes meat after a dare - and things go boom.
Not really. Actually not at all.
@@uiscepreston Why not?
the scenes themselves are completely different and their function within the narrative beyond being a catalyst for character development also has basically nothing in common
I agree with Mark's opinion on...*spits*... elevated horror.
Elevator horror precedes elevated horror. I've been a fan since Damien: Omen II. Share your favourite elevator horror below!
Mayo's "pinecones" made me spew my tea out.
I watched this last night, and liked it A LOT! I was already an enthusiastic fan of this little horror movie makin' family from seeing "The Deeper You Dig" which was fantastic. Very impressive, esecially considering how low the budget must be. There is a real visual flair and a bold visual style. Cool stuff! For fun, watch the credits at the end of "Hellbender" and notice just how many of their family members are being put to work making these movies! I swear, it seems like more than half the people involved have the same two surnames! So wild.
Just watched this on shudder, not bad, loved the music in it, is their a soundtrack? Hopefully on Spotify
Shudder picks up a lot of flicks off the festival circuit and most are pretty good to great.
Loved this review Mark! It was great and so fascinating that a family brought it to life. The future of horror is in good hands with this family. There is definitely no such thing as elevated horror- bull! As you said, it's all horror with ideas that turn into stories - as a horror fan I'm excited that there are unique voices being given a platform. We need to support films with original horror ideas. As a horror fan I'm very happy with Shudder has to offer, more independent films on this platform !!
Loved this movie and have to see their other films now. You also forgot to mention the family's name because to me it's hilarious. They're The Adams Family. THE ADAMS FAMILY that makes horror movies! How appropriate is that?
Having seen & loved "The Deeper You Dig" (bought the Arrow bluray) I will check this film out :-)
I feel the same when I hear graphic novel. It's a comic, and that's okay.
"Roadrunner once, roadrunner twice..." but I'm afraid I'm not in love with the modern world.
Definitely need to script an Elevator Horror Pic now ;)
I really liked Scream 5. But marks rant on elevated horror is the perfect counter to the opening lol
As someone who is claustrophoic. The Torture of Amber scene is so unsettling, i cant get it out of my mind. The horror was imagining myself in this enclosed place. When she was finally killed, it was merciful. Man the movie was very good, but that scene is tough.
love the Tee!
The Deeper You Dig is veeeeery good!
Just watched it on the back of this review. Really good film, imaginative.
You gotta be joking
Well said Mark!
I do not like the term elevated horror, thanks for pointing it out again!
In terms of "Hellbender", I thought the opening scene was the only scene that showed on screen quality. The rest was sadly poorly acted, poorly shot, poorly written dialogue, and only the overall plot kept me watch it till the end.
Someone should give the team a bigger crew and more money to remake it. "Antrum" on the other hand is such a well done movie. Also good to see comparisons to "The Witch that came over the Sea", yet the latter is a classic for a reason: it's well done and well told.
Wow, you could not be more wrong.
@@gavinmaitland80 Not an argument.
I liked it alot, also like Mark's Modern Lovers shirt. I wonder if it made the secretaries feel better?
i was lucky and got to see this film in october at the mayhem film festival in nottingham on the big screen it was so interesting, creative and original. i loved the odd witchy folk pagan atmosphere.
This was a fantastic movie. Just the right mix of randomness and quirkiness. It has a nice lore to it. And some twisted heart. Hanging grandma was a waste of rope!
Sounds like this family are making the type of horror film I like. Consider me interested.
It was absolutely awful
The "acting" was horrific
Dialogue was inane, script was ridiculous
It's like a movie for mentally challenged 10 year olds
Great!

thank you mark, i hate that phrase too
Elevated horror is a wonderful phrase. Why dismiss it so easily?!?
Because it's pretentious and unnecessary
because it's dismissive towards horror movies that are not outwardly "artsy" - even though a lot of seemingly unchallenging horror has lots of interesting ideas, and even though many horror classics were experimental/artstically challenging at the time they were produced.
this film is a fun and eerie bildungsroman. A coming of age tale told with heart and brain.
The irony is that "elevated horror" is what horror is supposed to be
I really like elevated horror!
As a big horror fan, I'm really confused by the acclaim this film is getting. Some of the acting is so bad that it's completely distracting (talking to you, Amber), but its biggest problem is that at no point is it remotely scary. Also, that drumming scene by the pool is so bad its funny.
The "mother" was horrible
The "father" was horrible
The daughter was the only decent actress
Horror doesn't have to be scary to be good.
Film about vegetarians... PERFECT! 🤩
I loved everything about this movie.
great tshirt
Elevated reviewer..
I hate the term elevated horror also.
Antrim would have been so hard to watch for the first time without the documentary framing device. I thought the documentary opener was fine, plus they linked the story to the Hungarian theater burning down with the two guys in the forest as if the movie takes something from its surroundings every time it plays like an evil Katamari film reel. But yeah, just opening cold with the brother and sister would have been so bizarre. Like, is this film naive or bad or is all this on purpose, I'm not sure I could have handled it. The framing device dampens the horror but it makes the film accessible.
I agree, i was really interested in the doc stuff, but bored by the actual 'film'. it was so slow and dull I actually turned it off. it would have been more interesting if they'd just showed clips of it within the doc.
Nincompoops ,love it
So it is Raw (2016) made by and for english speakers that can not read their own language?
It seems a bit different, more of the witch stuff and the folk horror which wasn't really woven into Raw, but there are definitely similarities judging by the review and the footage...
No
There is nothing supernatural about Raw though. Suppressed cannibalism.
This film seems to fall into the genre of elevated horror.
Do you mean psychological horror?
This movie stunk up my living room. It's cheap, terribly acted, terribly written and terribly directed. Didn't anyone notice how straight up BAD the lighting was in ANY of the interior scenes? Am I nuts? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
I liked this comment waaayyy more than this awful movie. I've seen, and thoroughly enjoyed many a cheap, crappy movie, but this didn't even hit THAT mark.
It was made by one family in lockdown on a small budget so it’s getting a praise for how good it is with all these things considered.
I hope she eats them too.
So the worm doesn't feel lonely.
ELEVATED!
"It's a vegan propaganda film." haha
Great film do not know why this is not in multiplexes the world over every one goes on about Peale & Shymalan & The Adams are way better
:)
Brilliant man mark kermode💪🏾
Thought this was a fantastic movie.
#Elevatedhorror 🙌💯😂
Teenagers? The youngest must be 22.
I couldn't help but cringe when she is playing drums by the swimming pool.
The term is "Smart-Horror" (sips IPA)
