I teared up a few times watching this gem of a film. Quiet, moving, thought-provoking. The little boy was phenomenal. And joaquin phoenix plays the ordinary man so well
Everyone in this was great. The actress who plays his recording partner really stood out to me. Also, massive props to Woody Norman being a kid and going toe to toe with Joaquin Phoenix.
He deserves the Oscar just as much as Joaquin imo
Went to see it today. One of the best films I’ve seen this year.
This film has that very rare quality that only a couple films have once every few years; that it makes you feel you had the most amazing dream for 2 hours and didn't realise you were in cinema. Transcendent, magnificent
Just came back home from C’mon C’mon. What a beautiful beautiful film. I’m in a bit of a sad/hard place in my life right now and this film felt like a warm hug and a pat on the back telling me “you can do this :)”. To quote Jesse (the kid): “You can never plan, nothing that you plan for ever happens - the most unbelievable things happen. You just have to tell yourself ‘C’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon…’”.
I mean, that quote may make some film nice and warm and fuzzy, but it's pretty much nonsense. You can plan realistically and doing so will generally improve peoples' lives.
He's a child speaking about how he sees his world and relationships around him - he could never have predicted that something so traumatic would lead to a life-changing friendship.
A superb film. Saw it with my girlfriend who suggested seeing it, solely on the name of Joachim Phoenix who never picks a bad film.
It would appear that many of the scenes are improvised, which makes the film all more compelling. The young actor who plays Jesse is the one to look out for in future performances.
Well worth seeing.
Mike Mills' movies feel like warm blankets love them
Please never stop reviewing movies... I'd be lost without them. I really wasn't sure about this film...now I feel like I must see it.... thank you
Iron man dies
Saw this this afternoon, very moving film, built realistic relationships gently and with real feeling
I haven't seen this yet, but I don't understand why Mike Mills is not more renowned. The guy just makes masterpieces.
Can't believe you made the Uncle Buck comparison without acknowledging that Gaby Hoffman, the mother in this film, was the other kid in that film!
Really? That's brilliant 👍
Ditto
Nicely analyzed review as always….watched it today…..what an endearing film that touches the crevices of the heart and mind…if I feel Joaquin is the ultimate performer then the kid outshines him with so much maturity, depth and character in the performance ….
I need to see this. As always thank you for the review.
Saw this as the surprise film at the LFF, which blew me and my girlfriend away
Beyond touching this film! I could relate to it so much and it got me. Just beautiful
A very articulate review, I cant wait to see this film!
Best film of the year in my opinion. Will most likely be beat out by Licorice Pizza since I love PTA’s films more than anything but DAMN this was powerful. Just came back from watching it and it was one of the moving experiences I’ve had in the cinema. Brilliant!!!
I think this movie will "hit you" if you are a parent, or a surrogate parent, or a parent-figure or a mentor. I'm a dad, myself, by the way. Might not be easily relatable if you're single or if you're not yet thinking about having a kid. For the teens and pre-teens, I think those who would find this relatable are those kids who are deep thinkers, and sensitive but not expressive, and longing for more attention from their mom or dad.
Mike Mills is a genius, I cannot wait to see this one.
Smart and touching film! One of the best I have seen in a while (It was released in Cologne only last week) Thank you for the sensitive and accurate review.
gutted this isnt being shown at my local (odeon), will inevitably have to travel quite a distance to see but based on this review it will have been worth it
I watched it on a plane to Dubai. Even though the sound track was broken. And I watched it on the way back even though the sound track was still broken.
Mark for world leader.
There is a moment at the end with a taxi. There is a slight tug. I cried.
Where can I find the full episodes of these?
You can listen to it as a podcast. It’s called ‘Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review’ on BBC Sounds, Spotify etc.
I love love Mark Kermode. Please live forever !!!
Love u mark!
Best film of the year

Fun Fact: Gabby Hoffman actually played the little girl in Uncle Buck
Can you please Review Kenneth Branagh's belfast please
Concerning "black-and-white" and "soundtrack" in Mike Mills' films, "I Am Easy to Find" is worth mentioning.
Having mentioned Uncle Buck in his review, Mark missed out on the chance to point out that Macauley Culkin's sister in that movie was played by Gaby Hoffman
This movie reminded me of a Wim Winders movie called Alice in the cities. So many parallels between that movie and this
Wanna watch this movie.
The profundity passed me by and I felt the opposite to Mark, in that the end result was much less than the sum of it's parts. Phoenix was excellent but I felt exceedingly apathetic towards the resolution and outcome. Sorry, just didn't do it for me I'm afraid.
Ironic that Uncle Buck came up seeing as Gabby Hoffman is in it.
. You were rather charmed by it?
With a title like that there may be an adverse reaction in this country... People may think it is a biopic about a certain G. Glitter!
I thought that too!
i cant actually understand what the kid says 'did you tell my mom that you .... with my dad when he first got sick?" listened lots of times cant make it out
"to leave"
@@jacob8949 did you tell my mom that you to leave with my dad when he first got sick?
I also cant make it out no matter how many times i listen to it. sometimes the audio is so quiet in the clip
Couldn't make it out in the cinema either
@@garad123456 No, "Did you tell my mom to leave my dad when he first got sick?"
I haaaaaated this film, everything about it felt like it was just one giant oscar clip, with faint noodly gentle atmospheric music playing in the background as if it was whispering in your ear "give us oscars!" ooooh its shot in black and white, whilst we hear the sound of children talking about the future, the most pretentious film ive seen in years
It’s shot in black and white because they forgot to film it in color
It looks boring
