- Amol Palekar was dropped from Basu Chatterjee's movie, Piya Ka Ghar. This video tells the viewers what prompted Basu Chatterjee to remove Amol Palekar from the cast of the movie. Surprisingly Basu Chatterjee selected Amol Palekar for his next directorial venture - Rajnigandha (1974). Amol Palekar was paired in Rajnigandha with Vidya Sinha and in this video we also tell the viewers how Basu Chatterjee discovered her for this movie. Amol Palekar formed a very successful pairing with Basu Chatterjee having acted in several of his films like Chhoti Si Baat (1976), Baaton Baaton Mein (1979), Chitchor(1976) etc.

Brilliant debut for both Amol Palekar (Hindi debut) & Vidya Sinha! On top of that Dinesh Thakur also played a vital role! Powered by Basu Chatterjee's direction & maestro Salil Chowdhury's music (not only the songs, the background score as well) - 'Rajnigandha' was a true landmark film! Unfortunately, among them, only Amol Palekar is alive today!

What a wonderful & lovely podcast.
Rajnigandha was a movie which at that time & to a certain extent is relatable even now. Such movies were realistic & the audience could find their own stories in such movies made by legendary directors like Hrishikesh Mukerjee & Basu Chatterjee.
Interesting to learn that due to some misunderstanding between Amol Palekar & Basu Chatterjee, Amol was dropped from Piya Ka Ghar & was replaced by Anil Dhawan.
Finally Rajnigandha came up although with another set of financial problems for the makers, but finally the movie saw the light & became a big hit completing a Silver Jubilee at a time where action movies were more preferred.
Also it was interesting to learn that Sharmila Tagore was the first choice for the movie, but this movie was destined for Vidya Sinha, Basuda very beautifully portrayed her as othe girl next door, alongwith a new actor Amol Palekar. The songs of the movie were also soul touching, love to hear them even now.

Im 26 and i prefer watching Basu Chatterjee and hrishikesh Mukherjee movies instead of new movies that are full of violence and stupidity....im sick of bollywood teaching us about everything movies are made for entertainment not for gyaan.

Rajnigandha was a very classic movie at the time. Basu Da is a great director. I have watched this movie. In those days Amol Palekar became so famous because of his classic movies.
