- Based on the Novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay called Devdas, the movie is the story of childhood sweethearts, Devdas (Dilip Kumar) and Paro (Suchitra Sen) set against the backdrop of rural Bengal during feudal times. When they decide to marry, Devdas' father disapproves the relationship as they belong to a very rich family. He sends his son packing to Calcutta for higher studies. Parvati's marriage is fixed with a wealthy zamindar, a widower with children older than his young second wife. In Calcutta, Devdas drowns his sorrows in alcohol and wishes to meet Paro one last time before he dies. He meets Chunilal (Motilal) who introduces him to an attractive and strong willed courtesan, Chandramukhi (Vyjayanthimala). Chandramukhi decides to nurse Devdas. Where will be the outcome of this tragic tale of love?

I am 84 plus nearly completing 85 and have seen all versions of Devdas but Bimal Roy's Devdas Best. Tragedy king acting, Talat songs same as were in Saigal's Raag Desh and other, direction music lyrics acting of Suchitra and Vyjayantimala, everything nice. A nice character as envisaged by novelist, everyone has to devote fully in himself, for which Dalipkumar will be remember always. Todays stars are after money not art.
All the actors & actresses were outstanding & their acting was mind blowing !
Whatever you do in life! Never ever be like Devdas. That character is a very misleading one for anyone trying to get over rejection or failures. After watching this movie I realised how cowardice, bad friends and the fear of public opinions can ruin your life. Devdas had two golden opportunity to run away and marry Paro and Chandramukhi in the end. He missed the first opportunity out of cowardice and again he lost Chandramukhi fearing public opinion when he could have easily disappeared to some other city after his fathers death. He made friends with Chunnilal who got him hooked into bad vices.
I have no remorse for Devdas because the women didn't reject him. He was a coward to accept her.
Isn't that's the beauty of the story? The hero isn't heroic and the women are strong and resolute. This movie is the best rendition of Sarat babu's story including the Bengali ones. Devdas wasn't meant to be a hero, never meant to be an inspiration. The last line of the novel is telling - "People like Devdas might die, but they shouldn't die the way Devdas died. At least there is someone close by you, someone to cry for you!!"
@@SudeeptaChakraborty Yes, that's true but only a film connoisseur like you can understand the context. Majority of people in India are dumb and blind followers of hindi cinema. They emulate the actors and whatever they see on screen. I did that too as a teen and growing up. As we grow we realise how life is different then movies. I wouldn't like anyone to get inspired by this movie.
In the Novel Writer mentioned he didn't want to one follow this character Devdas. Interestingly, Gandhiji's one of son's name was Devdas.
A weak indecisive minded man who wandered and died aimlessly swallowed by his own demons. An irresponsible man who didn’t bother about his family. Instead punished them. It is better to be childless than have a son like devdas.
I agree. These beautiful strong women gave their lives essentially to a loser who was not even worth them.
