So, the real reason Japan surrendered is revealed by the narrator himself at the end to be the capitulation of Hirohito himself. And the full text of Hirohito's speech reveals the central motivation for the capitulation:
      The two atomic bombs.
The speech reveals a number of other things, certainly. But the central motivation for Hirohito, not the befuddled second-guessing of historians, was the near obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, by atomic bombs.

I saw this pop-up on my feed and thought it was a compilation of a couple of WW2 documentaries from years ago that'd be nice for some background noise, as I hadn't checked the page that posted it. But I noticed the quality was good, the voice was familiar and that it was one, coherent, well-edited piece. THEN I SAW IT WAS LIFE GUIDE! I'm so happy you're posting again, so far this documentary seems well worth the wait, your channel is an utter gem! Love from South Africa 💙🇿🇦

I had three close family members live through WW2. One from Europe and two from the Pacific. Both Marines said the same thing: "We knew we were dead if we had to invade the mainland". "Those two bombs saved us." Signing a paper is one thing but convincing the population the war was over was more difficult. MacArthur was raised in the far east. He knew the mind set. When he set up an office in Tokyo, as he drove in his staff car the people would turn their backs. His aid was getting mad and Mac told him "They turn the other way because they are ashamed and can't look me in the face. Mac asked them to have the Emperor come to visit him. They told him the Emperor never left the Palace in his life. Mac said "he will this time or I will send the Marines to escort him." The Emperor did visit Mac and by that gesture the people realized the war was over and they had lost. (As I remember it)

It still surprises me that people question the use of the atomic bombs on Japan. The country was ruled by zealots! Fanatical zealots that would have burned Japan to the ground costing millions of Japanese lives and likely thousands of American, British and Soviet lives along with them. Japan had suffered even worse fire bombings in cities like Tokyo before the Atomic bombs were dropped yet, the military wanted to fight on.
Just think of what the land invasion would have looked like. How many would have died... needlessly... because of ideology and nothing more. Japan lost the war the war the day they bombed Pearl Harbor. It just took four long and brutal years of death and destruction for them to realize it.
The creation of the atomic bomb has ensured since it's creation that another world war doesn't happen. Sadly...I fear today...the stupidity and egos of our current leaders will lead us ass backwards into another world war or ... A nuclear exchange. But, I still doubt it as well. It's hard to ignore the concept of MAD. Mutual assured destruction. This is what has prevented the use of these weapons again because even the most radical of zealots can understand, there is no winning a nuclear war.
I wish people like Oppenheimer knew today that the work he lead, was ultimately a net benefit. It has prevented the massive death tolls of world war 1 and 2. War is as much a part of human nature as anything else. We still do it, regardless of our ability to reason. An ability we sometimes even use. But, I believe the threat of nuclear annihilation has kept us from repeating our history. Especially that of the last century.
Now, I wish at least one political party and movement in America today, and of many European countries, would learn from those examples and abandon this game of race based politics in their blood lust for power. I hope that next week, enough of America is wise enough to pick the lesser of the two evils and get us back on a path that rejects these policies and political games. It's as if we learned nothing from the last century. We need to and quickly before it's too late.

Apparently only under the single condition that the imperial order would remain intact. At the end of the documentary it stated that if the allied forces weren’t going to honor that one condition then the emperor was willing to continue the war. That means the emperor wasn’t making decisions that would best preserve his people but rather best preserve his own position.

Very well narrated and nicely balanced. I'm very pleased to say that there exists no personal or national animosity in the US towards Japan or Japanese 80 years after the end of that war. May we continue to be friends, cooperators, and allies.

Authoritarian governments don’t care about their general population. Mao killed 25 million by starvation because he thought switching to wheat from rice was a good idea. The Japanese war fanatics never realized that fighting to the death in every battle motivated the U.S. to bomb the Japanese cities to ensure the Japanese leaders that they would never win. Again the civilians suffered. Thousands of Okinawans died because the japanese army used them as shields. Germany was a terrible enemy to fight in WW2 but nothing compared to the outright animalistic behavior of their soldier. The Japanese army also murdered hundreds of thousand of Chinese.

I watched the whole thing and wow, I know that the main cause of surrender was welfare of the whole Japan due to the advance technological power that can wipe any country. But actually watching the whole council on how it happened as a narrative like this based on documented history really makes it more important for me to know. I am a weeb and knowing this, I am very thankful that the emperor made his decision. I would never want to see without a Japan today. At the same time, I respect their beliefs till the end because any people values their tennets in you know? But also knowing when is enough is also important. I really would like to travel to Japan soon but not just for the pop culture I love them for, but also with the great motivations to be what they were and to what they are today. I always am looking forward to your every uploads and you delivered phenomenal again thank you TLG!!!

I have heard and seen bits and pieces of these events, this seems to be a much better description of them.
One video that I saw indicated that the atomic bombs used on the Japanese cities were also meant to be a sign to the Soviet Union of what could happen to them. I have always wondered why the USA did not use them on military targets.

People focus too much on the couple of hundred thousand lives lost at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
While, these were regrettable, what was going on at the same time was that hundreds of thousands and millions of Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Malaysians Indo Chinese were dying of starvation by the month at that time of the war when Japan had drained East Asia food resources.
These millions of saved lives were saved by the A bomb.
Any lengthening of the war, even for a few months would have resulted in tens of millions of starvations, including Japanese civilians.
Americans continue to be criticized for dropping the bombs, But if you ask the east Asians, what they thought about it, they would have told you that the Americans where the great saviors and heroes of the starving people in their countries.
The Russian angle is a red herring. They only goal was to grab some land and islands north of Japan. That’s how Russians are, even today. They love to grab land.
The Emperor, in his announcement, clearly stated the main reason for “surrender “ (he didn’t actually use the word surrender“) was the atom bomb. This gave the stubborn and suicidal Japanese military, an “honorable” way out.
You might read the book “downfall” if you want the full detailed day by day, history of what was going on with the Japanese leadership in the few days after Nagasaki.
