I'm wondering if, since making this video, you've tried the Robin Wood Carving Axe or the Beavercraft AX3? If so, I'd love to know how you think these 2 compare with the 3 in this video. Thanks.
Speeding up the video defeats the purpose. I was looking forward to seeing how each axe handles but it immediately speeds up and I can tell nothing from the comparison. I really enjoyed the rest of the video and would certainly watch another video of these three axes in real time so I could better understand their strengths and weaknesses. Otherwise great video. I really enjoyed your expertise.
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for reminding me that a man can never have too many axes! (What was the name of the first on the list of axes you’d like to try? I didn’t catch the name.)
you probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. I've been binge watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
Just checked out the Ben Orford Nordic carver....it’s “from £385”. The Robin Wood carver I think was about £45.00 when I bought it years ago and I’m still using it. I think my absolute cutoff would be the £150 mark if an axe had consistently good write ups and reviews from users and I’d still hesitate even then as I’d probably never get the value at the level of use and skill that I’m at.
For what it's worth I am primarily a spoon carver. I have tried several small axes/hatchets to rough out my spoons and I found the Hans Karlsson was the best... by far. I also do some large bowls and I find it works well as a carver for that purpose as well The great bowl carver David Fisher prefers the Gransfors Bruks carver for bowls. I am sure he is right as the GB is heavier and able to power through bigger stock. Having said that I find the lighter Hans Karlsson is less likely for me to make a blunder. Someday I hope to get a Gransfors Bruks carver. You can't have too many axes!
Hi, do you think that the handle on the Kubben is thicker then say the wildlife axe? I have the Kubben and love it. But as a women I’m always wondering if the handle is a bit thick for me? Wondering if i should trade it out for the wildlife handle.???? If its thinner? Many thanks and thanks for all the great videos
I know it's been 4 years LoL but to answer your question: I have the wildlife hatchet from GB. It has an atrocious handle in my opinion. It is too thin, and has a triangular shape, with a sharp angle facing towards the edge/wood piece. This creates pressure points along all your fingers. What were they thinking LoL? Bad design for sure, and I will def replace it with a thicker, more rounded piece. The axe head is excellent, and really nice for spoon carving. It is the exact same head as this Kuben in the video.
Hello, Thank you for the video. Would you please upload it regular speed? I don't care at all how long each axe takes, I love watching such videos, hearing the tool on the wood, etc. Believe me most of us watching these types of videos love the sound of working. No music, nthing, just the sounds in your workshop. I just bought a GB Carving Axe and I never done anything else with an axe than chop wood. I love this axe, I love that I can make stuff with it. I'd like to see it in someone's hand who knows what he's doing but at the speed your video is shown isn't useful. Thank you much, Andras
Very informative video on 3 axes I have been thinking of buying for woodcrafting. As a side note, the sound of the airplane flying over at 8:19 sounds very cool with the sped up video.
The HK axes never have good handles with good grain orientation. I use the GB large carvers . One has right hand grind, and the small carvers , one of them has right hand grind. I don't find them heavy. Both sizes are brilliant! The small ones are very good for detail work on small items. I also use a Husqvarna camp axe thinned out the edge is more curved, like the large carving axe. This is a far better shape. I bought two, re profiled them to different grinds, and less than half price to the wildlife hatchet! I also use English axes on some work, 2.5lb to 3.5lb in weight. Nothing wrong with the old English makers. Had them over 40 years!
It's a common problem having to replace a handle on an axe. I have a bad experience with Council tools "premium" pack axe. The handle developed a wobble after a couple of usages. I guess we must be comfortable rehanging axes, before we can really call ourselves wood workers.😂
WH, I have the Robin Wood, a few side axes of various weights n sizes and the Hans Karlson Sloyd like yours and I'm really disappointed with the Robin Wood axe. I have to sharpen it at least 5 times in the time I do the HK just once. Save your money for something better.

Thanks.
I love the sound effects that make the video fun!
Hi Hamster do you have your templates available on pdf? I’d get them or buy them if you sell them! Keep up the good videos coming and thank you!
You really carve very fast!!! 😄😄😄
Thanks for the video, very interesting !!!
Thanks for this it's nice to see axes side by side this way with actually being able to have them in hand. Thank you
So I am wanting to purchase my first axe and try my hand at carving. Any updated suggestions? Money isn't that big of deal with in reason.

Exactly. That was disappointing

Looking at these myself!! Great review
Hi Hamster, Thanks for the video. Do you know how the Hultafors Agelsjon mini hatchet performs for carving?
really nice comparison. I'm looking at the GB small carver, and looks like it could help me learn control. I'm not looking for speed.

Very nice demonstration.

Very informative! Thanks for posting!
Love the Hans Karlsson Sloyd, I'd like to get another but no one stocks them or they sell out before I know they're in these days.
What is an acceptable weight for wood carving?
Gostei muito . Como eu faço para comprar uma machadinha dessas ?

Where can you purchase a axe
Can you send me a link where can I buy these axes please!

Thanks for the video it was very helpful.
I wish i could work with an axe in that fast motion in real life.
The fast forward wasnt really usefull but sure was satisfying to watch
Just looked on ebay, the HKS is $1000 US... (feb 2022)
Very good video as usual hamster
