That was an incredibly in depth review! Many thanks, you covered literally everything i can imagine wanting to see about this axe, i am 100% buying one of these now. Even did an unboxing video within the video and featherstick making / splitting etc. What a great demonstration lol. Cheers!
I really like these videos you make, that highlight that BushCraft kit/gear fashion is basically a commercial sales promotion. I always think of the blokes who did a World trip on £20,000 + motorcycles to great acclaim, then a young lady did practically the same thing, alone and virtually unsupported on a £4000 bike. If a tool works, is well made and reliable then everything else is just hanging on a name or what is fashionable.
It is an excellent Carving ax for it's intended to use and price point I own it and am totally satisfied For the money. A great tool ! Just enjoy using it in the great out doors. Remember nothing is perfect for everything old person advice.
Cracking video Neil ,maybe beavercraft should make some clothing too , do thier own version of the Swedish vidda Pro trousers 👖 . I'm watching your video about stealth camping right and enjoying a nice ale, great videos . All the best Ed
Thanks for the review. They have a new axe out, the AX3, that probably needs a review as well. The AX2 is an adze and as such a specialized woodworking tool. There are some decent German axes that can be found for a good price as well, so I think the Swedish axes are overpriced. But that is what happens when the attention goes one way only.
Just a thought about grain orientation on a hand ax. As you mention, they really shouldn't be getting that much stress. That said, the only handles I've had broken (by someone else, borrowing them), is trying to split wood by sinking the ax in, prying the wood apart. That was actually sideways stress. Maybe a BeaverCraft would handle that better? -- But of course, I'm not loaning axes to others much anymore. Not really a factor.
Nice entry level axe, the axe you are describing you want it to be though is the Hultafors Trekking axe. Ever so slightly longer, 75g heavier head and ever so slightly cheaper.
Anyone interested in whittling or spoon carving cannot go wrong with Beaver craft tools. I own a handful of different knives, detail, sloyd and crook. All top quality and great prices.
I feel the same despite being new to it and having no other knives to compare, they sure work good. I was confused by the rusting straight away though but since learnt i should wash the knives and dry after each use, has that worked for you? to keep rust away i mean. Thanks for any reply. Big up the cornflake.
Nice review and like the product. Completely agree with your brief comment 'prefer a longer one'. (Wouldn't we all 🤣). It looks as though the shaft is a an inch if not a couple too short for the overall form of the axe...
Another good review Neil of what appears to be a nice little carving axe. After lusting after a Robin Carving axe for a couple of years, I eventually gave up as they are always out of stock. Bought the slightly heavier Husqvarna hatchet instead, which is made for them by Hultafors. A brilliant bushcraft too for only £35 delivered. Going to get another one soon to hang on a 16" handle for heavier duty work.
well as a swedish person who has owned all brands of hatchets and axes made in sweden i would say fiskars actually the best alterantive once you get around the fact its composite instead of wood handle, but that looks like a great option for a wood handle and it supports ukraine.
I cannot stand the cheap plasticky feel and vibration of the plastic handles....they look shitty too and the steels not in the same caliber....rookie axes at best amd great for blisters....use a good council tool axe gransfors wetterlings Prandi Rinaldi etc REAL AXES
Well i am verry happy with my hultaforce ax with long stem. But next time i would like to try the Beavercraft ax. But i don't like the short stem. Thanks for the review.
Bought one on the back of this video, liked the look of it seems like a nice size and price to chuck in a carving kit. Arrived today..........Going back tomorrow, absolutely appalling the head shape is like a splitting axe, the cheeks are about 10mm thick each side and the forge finish looks like it was done with a ball peen hammer!!!
Looks great but I would scandi the grind it's better for wood working ,needs to be a tiny bit bigger for those of us who have large hands ,belt loop needs to be bigger for those who wear 2inch belts like the military onse ,a lot of people wear .
Please could you do a review and a compare axes that can be bought from local hardware stores to a typical bushcraft axe. One such is DeWalt DEWALT CAMPERS AXE 1 1/4LB which is listed in Screwfix. It has a solid handle rather than wood. Also Fiskars as a person commented below.
I have recently gotten this axe. Its pretty damn good. Would almost be perfect if the handle were slightly longer in my opinion. My only negative to speak of is the mask. The one mine came with falls off without unfastening the button closer. A little dangerous. Hopefully not all of them have this issue. Ive seen a few other reviews and it is never mentioned so i probably got a bad one.
Nice wee axe Neil. I am only just now looking at an axe, I like a tomahawk really - but that looks okay for what I'd use it for. How does it sharpen? Does the grind last? A 16-18 Inch handle would suit me, a bigger axe would be wasted. But at those prices I think I'll be seeing a blacksmith I know.
Neil I'm in market for a little chopper tool I own a bear ghrylls by gerber hatchet I reprofilled edge its now razor sharp as its very thin profile its great for spoon carving and shillaglahs carving I do alot its a great nice compacted tool but very light I has to put more effort In chopping perhaps the beaver craft axe be a winner ? I made few wedges thanks to felix immler on youtube to split branches for spoon carving too cheak him out very knowledgable guy 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊🇨🇭
Cold steel tomahawk all the way for me its cheap & can easily modify it like i did to a pack axe or pack tomahawk & i re did the edge & now i prefer it to my hultafors
The amount of Brades , Gilpin and Whitehouse to name but a few of the real quality Hatchets that can be found at Car Boot Sales Flea Markets etc for around £5/£10 its seems odd to pay £100 plus just because something has achieved " Cult " Status. Every Time the likes of say " Kent Survival???" Chops a piece of Wood the Video has to linger on his Granfor Axe . Its like Tool Snobbery and its not necessary to have to have one to enjoy yourself
Where I am finding anything worth a go is very difficult. One of my favourite axes for taking out is the Rinaldi American boys axe and am just in the process of making different length handles for it.
Looks like a decent hatchet but definitely not a "Swedish Axe Killer". At $90 (regular price) I'll stick with my Hults Bruk Aneby for which I paid just $40 more.
Can't beat that deal for a hand forged axe! If I didn't have so many axes already I might be tempted to add one to my collection. I have Gransfors, Hult Bruks, vintage Snow & Nealy's, Kelly, Plumbs, and a few others that their names escape me at the moment. I recently added a Council Tool Flying Fox to my collection and it has quickly become my favorite of the lot! While not hand forged, it is very well made and hafted to perfection, has clearly visible hardened edge and hardened poll lines and takes an edge like no other axe or hatchet I own. It cost me $55 USD, but did not come with a mask which is okay as I prefer to craft my own masks out of leather anyways. It didn't take me long to bedeck this prince of an hatchet with a custom made mask. ;-) I'm guessing import duties in the UK would probably add quite a bit to the price tag for one though. For your viewers that might have a very tight budget, I have this advice for them. Keep an eye open at antique and second hand stores for old axe and hatchet heads. One can often pick them up for very little money. One in my collection I picked up for a fiver. No idea who made it as there is no name or stamp on it, but it does appear to be quite old and good steel. I fashioned my own handle for it out of a piece of hardwood I had in my wood pile. There is something very satisfying and cathartic about finding a great deal on a hatchet head and then using one's own hands, imagination and some simple tools to bring it back to a useful life again.
Well I wanted Good Stuff, I got Husqwarna Forest Axe and Hatchet 🪓,Hatchet is phenomenal I can’t complain, but at that time BSH didn’t exist because I got my axes 🪓 quite a while ago..Hatchet is very versatile, I always use it to make fire 🔥 I don’t need knife,,,BTW ,,BPS have knife like Condor Bushlore, much cheaper and same performance…

Thanks for the review. Well done. My son "borrowed" my Gransforth-Bruks hatchet, so I've been looking at this one.
Lighter, cheaper, I'm sold.
looks like a fine piece of kit

Great review you just helped me make up my mind I will definitely be buying one of these today
A nifty little ax 😊 I only have two cons; the grain orientation and I would love a little knob at the end of the handle 😊
I have one already for a while. Holds up really well. Nice review 👍
Neil your the man. Thanks
Nice video Neil

Would get one but have to admit that I already own five axes of various types.

Great review, but I'm more than happy with my Fiskars. 👍
I definitely love my Fiskars hatchet and axe. Most swings are a single split unless the wood is cross-grained.

@@lionelyork4960 so are you another buttbuddy of Putins
I have some of their carving knives. Good tools at a great price! 🔪🎸

Mine wasn't like that at all. Sorry to hear that Mike
@@greencraft4783 Mine was a bit rusty too and I just noticed no extra brass wedge.
Was yours bought randomly or sent as a sample??
nice axe. wish they had something around 19 inches handle. but that is a great option.
Great video could I ask what watch it is your wearing as it seems easy to read. Thanks
What kind of trousers?

Informative video. Nice hatchet. But AUD 180 locally 😂.
I just bought 1

Interesting axe.
I guarantee that some smart arse will comment on you battoning the axe at the start of the video.

That time when an individual is inept at using a good sized knife.

No way handles are letting them down big time.
75$ is not a cheap axe. It is less than Hultan after discount on Ama-zon (where is was ~95$). Choice is yours..
It looks good BUT the grain on the handle is terrible/completely wrong. Also it's actually NOT a axe, it's a hatchet! Good video though.
No Russians were harmed in the testing of this axe. Unfortunately
Life sucks...
I like these ax and your other bushcraft gears. Here in the philippines most ax are china made and they are poor quality.
With all my tax dollars going over there to save their country I wish they could send me a free knife and a hatchet not to be negative but oh well.
Ukraine...no thanks. We.ve given them enough money.
great presentation as always .
but theres a thing called time and only time will tell.
