    Eddie Vedder is one of the best rock voices ever. Still is. As far as the emotional performance, Eddie always puts his entire being into a performance. He doesn’t know any other way. All the songs from the Unplugged session were great. A next video for them should be “Jeremy” (the uncensored version) or “Do The Evolution”. Both incredible songs and videos.

    A lot of singers miss lines or change them over time, or even rewrite songs. I think you'll find that this song was just deeply personal to Eddie, and he goes deep into his feelings when he performs.
    They refused to release this song as a single because of its personal nature, and it still became one of their more popular tracks. It's certainly a compelling performance.

      "Grunge" doesn't exist. It's just a label that record execs slapped on everyone in a region during a certain time period. No two bands that people would label as grunge sound anything alike. Nirvana is a punk band. Pearl Jam is classic rock. Soundgarden is hard rock. Alice In Chains alternated between metal, rock, and whatever the fuck they felt like that day. The only bands that fit the "grunge" label were the wannabes that came later.

Seeing all the bands growth in confidence and talent develop was amazing and cheap. Everyone was coming to Seattle to hear the bands. Layne Staley gave me goosebumps every song. He wrote this song and was going through the heartbreak still so all of the emotion was real to do with that don’t think the mess up added any emotion, it got that bad for him performing this song that they even had to stop performing it for a while because it was too hard for Eddie to perform! I don't think he was as concerned about messing up the lyrics as he was recreating and singing about such a black hole in his life (if you'll mind the pun) , because it affected him so much. He's said in interviews about the song that he finds it difficult to sing it due to how emotional he was when writing it, and how emotional he still feels about it.

  • @SteveJonesHimself
    @SteveJonesHimself 2 года назад +1

    There was no "mess up". The lyrics aren't wrong. They're *his* lyrics and so they are *definitively* correct. And they had no expectation that anyone in the audience would be following along with a lyric sheet. The energy is pretty typical of Eddie's performances and a major part of what makes it all work. (Of course, I'm sure they're feeding off of the audience, nerves, and environment, generally).
    For most of us, our first listens to these things were without benefit of lyric sheets. Nor were there a lot of "visual enhancement" to distract us (in this case, the visuals are the band performing and so essentially part of the performance). And we didn't tend to approach them so analytically the first time. The analytical mode significantly blunts the power and impact of the performance and so we'd try very hard to reserve it for subsequent hearings at which point, yeah, we'd tear it apart (and usually get everything wrong anyway).
    You can never hear it the first time again...

  • @BalbazaktheGreat
    @BalbazaktheGreat 2 года назад +2

    Great pick for a first listen; this really shows off Eddie Vedder's tremendous vocal talent. I especially love his non verbal vocalizations, which are are a signature of Peal Jam songs. You'll probably want to go back and listen to their their non-acoustic stuff. You're going to get a lot of recommendations for "Jeremy", but my personal favorite is "Better Man." The album "Ten" has tons of hit worth checking out ("Evenflow," "Alive," etc...)
    Edit: just a quick reminder that the Unplugged albums for Nivana, Pearl Jam, AIC, etc.. were full of once-in-a-life-time pefromances.

    Awesome review. Not sure if I agree that there was a mess-up to begin with, artists know their work, and they render it in different ways, most often at will or getting lost in it. While messing up may be a viewer's perspective, I don't think it was ever his at any point. Who knows though, when that kind of heartache, rage and passion are swirling in a vocal hurricane inferno, it is hard for me to slap any kind of label on it other than "f- yes". Great channel, keep up the great work.

    YASS! Contrast this with the heartbreak song you did a few weeks ago from Taylor Swift. He used lyrics AND delivery. After 9 long minutes, I get Taylor Swift was sad, but doing ok. Edie Vedder is destroyed. I felt it.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 2 года назад

      I really think Taylor Swift is a gifted songwriter. Eddie Vedder may have a talent for phrasing, but he's not at the same level. I love Black, but if we're being honest, it's a self-pitying teenager's lament. Done fantastically, and heartbreakingly, but not overly sophisticated lyrically. It's the performance that puts it over, as you mentioned.

    • @heyskipj
      @heyskipj 2 года назад +1

      @@Hexon66 You may be right since it's all subjective of course. To me, the performance is 90% of the song. The lyrics are only one part of the experience. In All Too Well it sounded like I was hearing her read her own "self-pitying" teenage diary entries, looking back at all the clues where the relationship was going. I didn't need 3, 4, 5.. examples. I did like the line, "You called me up just to break me like a promise." Last thing, if both Eddie and Taylor were singing in an alien language and we couldn't understand the words "Black" builds, soars, and breaks into pieces just like the story. I think it makes more people *feel* it. All to Well without lyrics, kinda sits there like a country drive on a nice day? The music, but mainly her vocal delivery honestly, never gets bumpy, like the lyrics.
      That's not to say anything bad about her voice. I'm only commenting on the emotional delivery chosen in this one song. Does she have a performance showcasing her range? BTW, I know nothing of Taylor's music, but her celebrity self seems cool and grounded. Peace!

    Spot on ,Syed !
    The mistakes make it better.
    There are 2 types of musician (or closer would be to say that we all fall somewhere on the line between these two extremes)
    There are "Dots on the page" players, who follow the music as written exactly, and at the other extreme there are the Jammers, the improv guys.
    If you search YT for Eddie Vedder, you will find out quickly that he's a jammer, out-and-out. YT is filled with guest spots, duets of other people's songs and so on, and my overarching impression is that he's previously met up with whoever he's playing with at a party, or around a fire somewhere, and they jammed a couple of tunes together.
    So jammers are more likely to be able to adapt, whereas "Dots on page" players are less likely to make those mistakes in the first place.
    Another example of exactly that would be Paolo Nutini.
