🥁Drummer Yoyoka’s Profile🥁
Born in October 2009, she started playing drums at the age of two, played live at four, and formed her family band "Kaneaiyoyoka" at five. At 6 years old, she even released her first CD while in kindergarten.
In addition to drums, Yoyoka sings vocals, plays the piano and is a songwriter. In 2018, at the age of 8, she became the youngest weekly champion in the under-18 category of the international female drummer contest "Hit Like A Girl".
Her application video, a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times" was featured on NBC, NPR, in Rolling Stone Magazine and in Billboard and then spread all over the world.
Her drumming prowess has been praised by music legends such as Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Sheryl Crow, Gene Simmons and Eric Singer (KISS), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Hayley Williams (Paramore), Sass Jordan, Tony Royster Jr., Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine) , Derrick McKenzie (Jamiroquai).
At the age of eight, Yoyoka appeared in Japan's famous rock festival "RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL in EZO" as the youngest performer ever and made a surprise appearance on the stage of Fall Out Boy in "Summer Sonic Tokyo" in front of an audience of 20,000. Later, she was the guest drummer for two songs of Cyndi Lauper’s performance at Tokyo Orchard Hall, the last day of her Japan tour.
Yoyoka is endorsed by world-class brands such as Nike, Moncler, and UNIQLO, filming well-received commercials in Thailand and New York. At the age of eight, she became the youngest drummer ever to sign an endorsement contract with drum makers Pearl and VIC FIRTH, and has since then also signed with Zildjian, CYMPAD and DW.
She made two appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in LA in January and May 2019 where she was praised by Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters, and later on had a successful live house at the legendary "Whisky A Go Go".
In April 2019, she was selected as one of Newsweek Japan’s "100 Japanese people respected by the world", the youngest in history.
Pearl showcased her talent the 2020 NAMM show in Anaheim the world’s largest musical instruments trade show. She was the youngest female and only Japanese drummer to appear.
The impact of "Yoyoka" continues to spread worldwide. Her favorite drummers are John Henry Bonham, Chris Coleman, Nate Smith, Chad Smith and David Grohl. Her dream is to travel and play sessions with people all over the world. She is also hoping to preform in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Yoyoka's parents are Akifumi and Rie Soma, according to Wikipedia. I've said it before and I will say it again, these parents are worthy of recognition, y'all. It's crazy that they've been able to encourage and nurture such talent, literally playing with their children, in such a loving way. Also, there is no hint of exploitation, it's simply humble presentation of what the Soma family has to offer the world. And Yoyoka seems quite humble, as always. I'm floored by this success of child-raising. A loud shout out to Akifumi and Rie!

以前から思っていたけど
既存の曲に合わせてドラムを叩いているはずなのに
既存音源がよよかちゃんのドラムに合わせてるような錯覚に陥る。
テクニカルに叩くだけじゃない曲の支配力はプロさんでもなかなか居ないよ。
ほんとほんと！歌が活きてる、なぜかなあ？ゲストミュージシャンでお客が沸くのはあるけれど、シンガーが本当に輝いてしまう。こんなマジックはよよかちゃんだけだ。
ツェッペリンの曲ではロバートプラントがオリジナルより魅了的で、こんなに上手かったんだと思わせる！
Yoyoka さんが尊敬する山木秀夫さんが歌のある曲のドラム演奏は基本的に歌声より音が大きくならないように気を付けると言っていたのを記憶しています。ミキサー任せにしない山木さんらしいと思っていました。ところが Yoyoka さんの場合歌の有る曲でも曲調により若干の違いがありますがロック系の場合はかなり歌声よりドラムの音圧が高いと感じることが多いです、しかしそれがうるさくて歌の邪魔をしているように感じないのが不思議でした。昨年のステイホームのセッション動画でたまたま山木秀夫さんとYoyokaさんが同じ曲を叩いていましたが確かに山木さんのドラム音が極端に抑えているように感じました。以前の山木さんの歌のバック演奏時の心得会話を記憶しているので気になっています。Yoyokaさんのドラムは音圧が上がっても耳障りにならないのは何か理由があるのか、どなたか解る方の意見を聞いてみたいものです。

@@sari4293 さん おそらく演奏者にとって永遠のテーマではないかと思います。聴く側にとって気持よく聴けるというのがまず一番ではないかと思います。抽象的ですが数学と違い確定的な答えがない、それがまた音楽の魅力だと思います。
この曲の大きなスパイスになってるハイハットのミュート踏み。タイトでずっと気持ちいい。タムワークもスゴイけど、足周りもシャープだ。
もう誰も子供のドラムとか思って聴いてるひとはいないんじゃない？関ジャムみたよ。よよかちゃんの未来を妄想するだけで酒が美味い。
何て言うか、ただ単にうまいとかじゃなくて、ハートがあるドラミングだよね。

オリジナルと比べると確かに少し派手な演奏かもしれない。でもドラマーに限らずこれは誰が演奏している、とわかるのが演奏者の個性であり魅力であると思う。いろいろなレコーディングの場面では要求に答える能力が必要なのかもしれないが、彼女はもう既によよかが演奏しているとわかる手クセを持っていると思うのでこのまま自分の個性を育んでほしい。

Those sticks are an extension of her soul. It's so beautiful to watch.
Her musicality is ridiculous. Its as if her soul is sitting within the music and her performance oozes out of her gifted arms and feet with rhythm and dynamics. Its like she doesn't have to find the pocket, because her whole self is IN the pocket and every stike comes from that. She shows that she lives in the emotion of music regardless of style:
Raw intensity and Rage of Know Your Enemy;
DEEP soul of Dazed and Confused;
Rocking head banging of Burn;
Funky joy of Space Cowboy.
She is a fantastic technician, without which it wouldn't be possible to show what a truly inspiring MUSICIAN she is. Brilliant!

Ive spent days ... actually, months ... watching her performances and pondering the magical source of her uncanny talent. And during one viewing of her cover of The Who, the answer suddenly came to me. Actually I was on the track to this realization after watching her cover of Good Times Bad Times, and thinking for a minute that I was seeing John Bonham's reincarnation. But it was the Keith Moon cover that convinced me beyond question.
In Japan, there are legends about people with a "kitsune ( 狐 = fox) spirit", who are able to take the form of any person. According to the legends, the kitsune is able to put on another person's appearance and abilities in the same way you and I put on clothes (another analogy would be the "faceless men" in Game of Thrones). When a kitsune assumes a person's identity, they also gain all the abilities/powers/knowledge of the person they are imitating. Although it is "just" a legend, there are several people from Japanese history who - at least in the eyes of the people who wrote their historical accounts - were believed to actually have this ability.
I honestly believe that Yoyoka is the kitsune (fox goddess) of drums. The uncanny ease with which she finds her groove and takes total command of the pocket, is because she simply searches for the "identity" of the person who made the song famous, and puts it on like a second skin.
Since you are probably wondering about my sanity, at this point, I wont ramble on and on about it. I'll just offer you a couple of specific examples and you can decide for yourself whether I am just imagining things.

Yoyoka is just coasting through this one, until the break (guitar solo) where the drums and guitar shift in and out of phase. Her expression gets serious as she is focusing on the timing, but then, right about at the point I linked to, she just goes into the zone. From there on (especially the start of the next verse) . . . well, just see for yourself. Hello Bonzo.

Acid Jazz の最高傑作と言われていた名盤ですね。1年前にカバーした同じ Jamiroquai の Virtual Insanity の方が日本ではカップヌードルのCMでやたらテレビで流れたので聞きなれていましたが今回の Space Coｗboy の方が当時評価は高かったですね。しかし Yoyoka さんにとってはアシッドジャズ、ファンク、ヒップホップ系の音楽でもジャンルに関係なくヘビーでグルービー にこなしてしまう。演奏でのセンスはロックよりこちらのほうが解りやすいですね。兎に角カッコイイので原曲と聴き比べることをお勧めします。

あの幼児期の頃と比べて安定感がプロ並みだけど、どちらも楽しそうにやっているのがドラマーとしての良さとか魅力になっていると思う。
プロ並みと言うより海外ではプロとしてかなり評価は高いです。国内では高名な指導者に指導を受けていなかったので同業者の中では賞賛しずらいでしょうがそんなことは構わず応援してくれるドラマーや以外のミュージシャンプロも多いです。

改めてよよかさんの音楽に対する姿勢や貪欲さに脱帽!!よよかさんの動画で様々なア―ティストや楽曲を知る事で世界中の人達と喜びを共有できる素晴らしさ。90年代に入ってUK を代表するAcid Jazz ア―ティストJamiroquai のToo Young To Die にハマってしまい、ジｪイ▪ケイのヴォ―カルや音の雰囲気がStevie Wonder に似てるな～と、思ったものだ。個人的にはベストアルバムにも収録されている~Seven Days in Sunny June が気に入り毎日聴いていた。今後も、よよかさんがどんなジャンルにチャレンジするか楽しみです!!!
