    The modern attraction of the Holga is amazing. In 1954 ( 8 years old) I inherited an Ansco Pioneer snapshot camera.(620 roll film; 6x9cm format; one speed shutter, one aperture lens) made around 1950. For years we had a family photo album with pictures I took with it from a 1954 road trip to the Grand Canyon, probably planting the photo bug in me for the rest of my life. Shot an early form of Kodacolor, pretty poor color fidelity even when new. With all that, it still took photos which vastly surpass the ability of a Holga. There were huge numbers of such box cameras up to the 1906s. They were satisfactory because they mainly used a medium speed B&W film with a huge dynamic range, like Kodak Verichrome. The concept of over- or under-exposure on
    Verichrome was almost irrelevant. Since most consumer processing returned B&W contact prints, sharpness and grain were non-issues. Times, they change unless you are drawn to a Holga of course. How can an 80 year old box camera embarrass a Holga? It used a simple glass lens rather than a plastic lens (no cheap optical plastics in 1950) and the film plane curves to match focus and cancel lens distortion. On ebay - $15 plus shipping, more or less.

      It sounds like youre one of these people who arent capable of taking good photos with a classic camera like the Holga. first off, its a toy camera.. theres a certain look you should be going for if youre using a Holga and beautiful, sharp photos shouldnt be one of them. Second, if youre not gonna be handling the development yourselft to really make things pop. B&W photos look beautiful coming from a Holga assuming the photographer has a good eye.

    I love my silly Holga - I found that if I set the focus setting in between long and mid range, it makes my mid-range shots a bit distorted, not blurry. Shamelessly pushed Ektar 100 through it, though mine is taped up like an engineer's lunchbox so I have no light leaks. (Oh, and I taped over the "exposure" switch, because I heard that was a major light leak source).

    A major improvement to this with a similar optical look would be any old uncoated folding camera, or in a more similar form factor, the Bellora Bella 66 (metal body, glass lens, German made) or the Agfa Isola tube camera which I prefer because it has F6.3, F11 and 1/100, 1/30, and all of these options will have B mode with cable release.

  • @jclark1693

    I used to shoot a holga135 a lot, so I had the focal ranges memorized. You can look it up, obviously there’s still an element of guessing but at least you know roughly how many meters it intends, or whatever. I even got a set of macro/close-up lenses and the occasionally produce shockingly sharp focus (in the center of the image). But it is a gamble to shoot. It’s hard to know what you’re getting from it.
    I often go back and forth about whether I prefer the holga (or ArgusC3) style of never exactly knowing what the shot is until it develops vs an SLR where you can be very precise about the shot. Getting exactly the image you were trying for is obviously satisfying but there’s a magic in the uncertainty of the “aim and hope” style of camera.
    Also you can buy an adapter for the holga120 that allows you to use a cable shutter control for long exposures. So it is actually good for that.

  • @xjoexedge
    @xjoexedge 2 года назад +1

    The Holga aquires a lot of patience and trial and error. We us the holga's in one of our photo classes and you have to shoot a lot to find the sweet spot of the lens where its the sharpest. To get rid of the light leaks you have to use black electrical tape instead of gaffers tape and also cover the window with a flap so you can open it when advancing the film. I have see a decade of people use the Holga and once you master the lens and the settings of your patercular holga you can get some amazing shots. I really think each holga is different of on another. I really recommend looking up David Burnett and his holga images, shooting the Olympics, presidents, soldiers etc...

    I bought a $20 Holga pinhole lens for my Canon T5 and I quite enjoy it for quick shots while on trips. The digital camera allows you to crank up some of the settings and it saturates the reds and blues for super nostalgic looking photos. I enjoy a little bit of natural grain and soft lighting so it is very fun to experiment with when I'm bored of my 50mm.

    what does it matter what Ebay sellers say about the storage of expired film. They're probably lying anyway

    I mean, you're playing lo-fi background music (music intentionally made to sound low quality) and you have some 8mm-esque b-roll (footage intentionally made to look low-quality)... but you're not happy with the low-quality holga pictures?
    If it's because you want your photos to be like paintings, well lots of paintings are flaking and cracking too?

    Was anyone else expecting him to throw the Holga in the water at 11:23?

    I typically would not have watched an entire 15 min video on the Holga.
