How Michael J. Fox Became the Biggest Star of 1985

  • Before Timothée Chalamet, Tom Holland, and Dylan O'Brien, there was one bright young actor who stood out from the crowd...Michael J. Fox! Most known for his role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and his 30+ year battle with Parkinson's disease, Michael J. Fox is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. In the summer of 1985, he was THE biggest name in Hollywood. Busy with the hit sitcom, Family Ties, Michael J. Fox was originally unable to do Back to the Future, and the role of Marty McFly instead went to Eric Stoltz. While filming on Back to the Future began, Michael J. Fox got an unexpected break in production from Family Ties that allowed him to shoot the Indie movie, Teen Wolf.
    Reviewing over a month's worth of Back to the Future footage, Director Robert Zemeckis knew he had made a mistake...he casted the wrong Marty McFly. Eric Stoltz was talented, but he wasn't right for the role. Working around Fox's busy schedule, and with the help of producer Steven Spielberg, Eric Stoltz was replaced by Michael J. Fox. After a dramatic shoot, Back to the Future wrapped production and hit theaters in July of '85. A month later, the studio behind Teen Wolf used the momentum of Back to the Future and released the movie in August. Teen Wolf took the #2 spot in theaters, right behind Back to the Future. Teen Wolf remains a cult classic, and Back to the Future ended up becoming the highest grossing movie of 1985. So, in the summer of '85, Michael J. Fox had the 2 biggest movies in theaters at the same time, as well as starring in the 2nd biggest show on television.
    Currently, Chris Pratt has the 2 biggest movies in theaters, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at #1, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie at #2. The difference is, while Chris Pratt is a star, these movies are a part of a huge fanbase on their own. Back to the Future and Teen Wolf were not guaranteed to be a success...they were destined to.
    Michael J. Fox has a new documentary out on Apple TV, called "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie". It's not a sponsor, but being a giant fan of Fox's, I'm excited to see it. I put a ton of time and effort into this video, so I hope you enjoy it! Feel free to like, share, and comment. Also, make sure to subscribe if you haven't already. I'm always working on new filmmaking/movie related content. These video essays have been very fun for me to make!

    The "Back to the Future" trilogy for me, without a doubt! I loved the chemistry between Michael and Christopher Lloyd as Doc. And I loved how Michael played different characters during the films - like his great-great-grandfather and his two kids, and even himself as a middle-aged man. He made each character so unique and likable.

      Totally agree! I love the chemistry between Doc and Marty. Michael did an awesome job playing multiple characters and was able to make them all feel unique. 😁

    I was 9 years old when I saw BTTF in the theater with my family in the summer of ‘85. I think I’ve only felt that movie magic a few times in my life. That was definitely one of them. MJF just totally makes this movie so great. He’s a legend! The movie is just as popular as it was almost 40 years ago. It’s a timeless flick.

    This video is fire. Each transition is flawless and accurately matches what’s being said in the voiceover. Once again, an incredible piece of art by a talented young director. Way to go Benjamin!

    I think the way they got Fox from family ties was Steven Spielberg! They wanted Fox so Spielberg, the most influential director in Hollywood probably sauntered over there and said hey, we want and need Mike for this movie! I don't think they had a choice! 🤣

    Back to the future is my favourite. It being my number one comfort movie, something I go to when I’m feeling down or just not in the right head space. I love it, I’ve watched it and it’s sequels so many times. So much so that in the third one (combing both my love for westerns and for BTTF) during one of my many rewatches, I spent the whole movie watching the background. Noticing all the little details (including a universal security guard walk past in one of the scenes whilst Marty is in the saloon).
    I loved this video, I found it through RUclips shorts and realised this must’ve come from an actual video, so I came to the channel to watch! Great work, keep it up. Also nobody calls me chicken!

      Thank you so much! Back to the Future is the ultimate comfort movie and even as someone who doesn’t watch a lot of westerns, I love the third Back to the Future! I’m glad you liked the video and it’s nice to know that people are discovering this channel from the RUclips shorts. :)

    Teen Wolf was filmed in a month?
    Even for the time, that feels insane as much as I know about movies now.

    • @Hairaising
      @Hairaising  Год назад +1

      @@TheKeenTribe it’s funny you say that, because I also read that! It’s even what I put in the first draft. However, I found different sources saying a month, and the one I found that said 3 weeks mentioned the week solely for the basketball scenes. I didn’t know if that week was included in the 3 weeks or if that made it 4 in total…so I decided to say about a month 😂
