Hi, this is great! You really captured the look and feel of the original! For fun and some practice I'm going to try my hand at classic DK in Unity as well, but I am curious how you went about the level design. Did you draw out each entire level by hand (in photoshop, etc), or construct them out of sprites in the editor? If the latter, how did you get the sprites to snap to each other pixel perfect? I looked into Unity's tile grid component but ran into some things right away, like the sloped girders. They increase in height by one pixel every 16 pixels (or 2 "tiles" if using 8x8 tiles) so they don't really fit to the grid unless you manually adjust them, which feels weird.. Also, do you use Unity physics, or your own for player/AI/barrel movement? I have a bunch of questions 😂. If you ever considered making a tutorial on this subject that would be awesome, but no pressure at all. I'm just very interested in how folks go about creating retro arcade games like this!
You can use Tilemaps to create level, search for "Painting on tilemap (audio only on gameplay)" on RUclips. And as for player and barrel, I used Kinematic Rigidbody 2D on Unity and Area2D on Godot.
