A Small Haul from Sundance Orchids and Bromeliads

- In this video, I show my small haul of new orchids from Sundance Orchids and Bromeliads in Ft. Myers, Florida. Their July sale continues through Saturday, July 20th.
I also share some ideas about my plans for these purchases and show the orchid that I won during Orchid Bingo, which was held by my local orchid society.

Glad to see you went for _B. cuculata_ . Should make for some interesting hybrids.
I hope so - will cross it with a big colorful Catt, if I can get it to bloom.... It is a small plant!
The B. cuculata is on my wish list for the same reasons as yours, it seems to make for some really nice hybrids. I looked at the OrchidRoots page for it and especially when crossed with the large flowered Cattleya hybrids it makes for really interesting lips on the resulting progeny. Allen Black has made some really nice crosses with it too. It seems like sometimes there is a purple tint to the petals that it passes on to its progeny.
Yeah - Allen is a really good Brassivola breeder. I do think that I have a year or two before.my plant flowers to think about this. But, I just flasked some seed from a cuculata hybrid (not my cross) and I think I can make extra flasks for others... I would prefer to cross it with a bigger flower.

I thought that Foo Tu Glory (not sure of spelling) is a very interesting color. What is the correct spelling?
That plant is Rth. Fu Shu Glory ‘Happy Holiday’ - not sure how long it will take to bloom. This seems to be a fairly popular and commonly found orchid - can't wait to cross it with something fun!!
My rule when it comes to pronouncing Latin is to never trust English speakers. English is so irregular in regards to vowel pronunciation that I think it best to stick with classical Latin for reading the Latin names in biology, where possible. So the term "bigibbum" has two "i" in it and they should be pronounced the same.
That is how I originally pronounced it. But, the first "I" means 2 which means that it is pronounced "bye" as in bicolor. I do not want to get caught up in this. But, since we are, how would you say Myrmecophila? Accent on the 4th or 3rd syllable? I have heard this both ways too.
@@plantpropagator I would say it is MyrmecoPHIla, accent on phi (pronounced PHEE), because phila in Latin means "friend" or "in favor of". Same root as the term PHYLUM. I have no idea what the Myrmeco prefix means, though! Here in Brazil, schools used to have Latin classes back when my parents were in high school, but it has been dropped from the school curriculum long ago... It is a pity!
@@Naturamorpho Umm - I took Latin in high school and is is NOT a pity that it was dropped. I am a scientist and the 2 years in Latin class that I had to endure were worthless. I always ask people how they pronounce certain orchid names and it is always all over the place. I do rely on the pronunciation guide put out by the American Orchid Society but remember, this is a US English-speaking society!!
@@plantpropagator For Portuguese speaking people, Latin is a real help when you have spelling doubts. When you know the root of the word, everything gets a lot easier. And, believe me, even though Portuguese came from Latin, people's pronunciation of the binomial Latin names of organisms is also all over the place.
@@plantpropagator I follow a very nice channel here on YT, called Clint's Reptiles. His pronunciation of the Latin names of animals is the very best I ever heard from an English language native! An example to be followed!
