  • Recording virtual drums is often a crucial skill for a home recording enthusiast, because it’s rare to have the space and abilities needed for real drums. In this episode we look at my method for developing a virtual drum part specifically for this song.

      Yes, its mostly a separation of tasks thing. I very rough mix is the only thing I need now, and this song is soon to have many more channels. So for now it just keeps the console view a little cleaner.

    Once again a really good session. Thanks Mike. Years ago when doing a fair bit of drums I would use the Sonar Step Sequencer. In the sequencer it is a very simple task to adjust velocities and even the timing of individual drums or hits. The thing with the sequencer it is really easy to create ghost hits and drum rolls (starting at low velocity and increasing toward the end and also moving notes within the roll using earlier or later hits). I found it easier than trying to do it via the midi keyboard. The Step Sequencer in Sonar (Cakewalk) is fairly underrated in my opinion. Also in other cases as recently with a bass part I did Quantise the part very tightly then used the CAL Humanise option to shift it all slightly which worked fine.

      I forgot to add (actually I forgot) you can also split hits in the sequencer and change the flam time to make drum rolls and various hits more interesting. As I said the sequencer is a good tool to know and is often forgotten. Tony

    I had to come back to rewatch all your stuff about doing drums in Cakewalk. And to shout about my new guitar teacher. I just had my first lesson with Michael Angelo Batio last night (he's the shred god who said, "I'm gonna give you the keys to the Lamborghini," in a now-infamous instructional video, and it's become a sort of meme many years later...he also taught Tom Morello of RAtM, and invented both the double-neck and quad-neck guitars he became famous for playing). He's going to be giving me regular Skype lessons for a while, and he told me to forget about using a metronome for practicing my songs (none of his songs yet, because that's not possible for me at my level). Apparently he used a drum machine throughout his learning, which really helped him with timing, and if you watch him do any playthroughs you can see his timing his amazing. So, I'm finally trying to properly figure out drums in Cakewalk (by the way, he said Cakewalk is a great DAW). I'm playing things like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but I'm playing way too fast (according to him, my picking speed is really fast, so yay! he seemed surprised how fast I was) and I was playing too timidly, so he recommended a drum mix to avoid that. I really lucked out with my new teacher. My brain still feels like it's exploding a little bit.

    1:51 Adjusting the velocity curve on the keyboard. You should set it before you record.
    2:39
    3:17 Getting the right drum sounds
    4:14 Other separate MIDI tracks for each drum. That's how he organises it
    4:50, 6:06 Extra feature in Cakewalk. A Drum map, an alternative to the Piano Roll. Drag drum MIDI up to another MIDI track then double click on it.
    7:26 Recording different sections of drum kit onto different tracks. And achieving natural velocity with the drumming.
    8:30
    9:34
    10:10 Quantizing the drums
    11:26 Setting the Strength
    12:37
    13:27 Remember what's actually possible by a real drummer, he just has 2 hands
    13:57 Recording kick and snare
    14:20 If the kick and bass are in sync it can sound very punchy and rhythmic.
    18:06 Won't quantize the toms because he likes them very human
    18:41 Mix. We'll end up with many outputs for the drum kit. But at first just keep it as the stereo output to keep it simple. So don't separate them all into different outputs just now. You can do it later in the mixing stage.

    Hey Mike! I'm making my way through these awesome tutorials, and had a question regarding saving projects. My hard drive is large enough for my daily use, however, I'm afraid it's not going to handle the Cakewalk files, especially as I add more to the projects. I do however have a TB of space via OneDrive, and was curious if you (or anyone who would like to chime in) has used this method for storing projects while working on them. I use this method for my Adobe projects, and so far it's worked out very well. Thanks in advance!!

    • @robertpkhoury
      @robertpkhoury 4 года назад

      I plan to do this with a 2TB external drive I have so I will let you know how I get on. I would assume as long as you import active projects back to your PC drive (where cakewalk will be looking for them) when you want to work on them I don't see why this would be a problem.

    Such a coincidence! I am just starting to produce my song and then i found your channel!!!! A great playlist also.
    Two questions from me:
    1. How to create track with drum, guitar, etc icons?
    2. On midi track, to switch from keyboard view to name/label view, do we have to move the recorded midi to other empty midi track? I think on Studio One we can switch between views without moving any events.

    • @CreativeSauce
      @CreativeSauce  4 года назад

      Hi Azka, and congratulations on getting started with your song! In some of my videos you can see I use icons for the instruments. Just right click on that area where the icon is, and select "Load Track Icon". There are a whole bunch that come with Cakewalk.
      I hope I have understood your second question. Essentially, when switching views, you dont have to move any events. For midi parts the main ones would be Piano Role view, Staff View, and the Event List.They will all open in separate views with tabs to switch between.

      @@CreativeSauce Hi again. Another questions :)
      1. In this video, how did you create your track 7-10? Did you create 7 and then added 8-10 manually? Or did you use the advanced setting on Instrument track creation? I tried this advanced setting, but only got 1 instrument track + its midi track. I cant find the way to add more midi tracks for the same instrument track.
      2. You created track 11 to demonstrate drum map. Did you have to create new midi track, record some events, then move them track 8? Or is there any other ways to switch from piano roll view to drum map view without moving any events like you did?
      Thanks for your help :)

    You purchased Cakewalk Sonar as your opening pics shows Addictive Drums rather than the Studio Instruments drms included with Cakewalk By Bandlab. I would like it if Cakewalk By Bandlab would bring back and improve Session drummer 3.

    Great video as usual. Just wondering if you always record drums from scratch or if you ever use any of the pre-programmed beats that come with Addictive Drums.

    • @CreativeSauce
      @CreativeSauce  4 года назад

      Hi Paul. I rarely use pre made beats, unless its to provide inspiration. Normally I have a song written, and its easier for me to write the part, than search for a pre-made beat. However, if people want to use existing beats, its cool - there is no 'right' way.

  • @RainStickland

    Thanks for the helpful video! Have you ever had your timing shift on you? I set it up with a metronome track initially at 120 BPM, but when I went back into it today I had to adjust it to 119.2 to get it to sit right. Did I click something and drag the track out of time? I know you can do it intentionally in Audacity, but Cakewalk is unfamiliar territory still.

    I'm struggling here. Due to budget/talent constraints the step sequencer is how I'm programming drums it's just how I'm comfortable doing it after years of working with a Yamaha RX8 but the cakewalk step sequencer is limited to 64 beats/ 16 steps where I'm getting around 2 mins worth of a 4 minute song. Is there a way to extend this time frame? I can't find an answer to this anywhere. Please help 😫
