    While translating they relied on Joseph Knight in Colesville for food. Joseph and Oliver traveled the 23 miles to the Knight farm asking for help, Father Knight was not home, but when he learned about Joseph Smith asking for help he purchased a barrel of Mackerel and lined paper and loaded a wagon with food and took it to Joseph. The Knight family loved and believed Joseph and supported him their entire lives.

    To Jackson's question about Joseph Smith saying the Book of Mormon containing errors of men, loved the Brigham Young quote. As Brother Joseph grew in his own understanding, he likely would have used different words as he translated. I so appreciate the humanity of the translation process. Even the D&C must have been such a challenge to SEE a vision and then have to put it into words.
    Regarding general conference format, sometimes it helps me when I remember that the leaders of the Church are addressing the entire world, Church members of many different cultures. Sharing carefully prepared words makes more sense then.
    Great podcast, everyone!

    Talking scripture is my favorite because it is the right length to my attention span of learning. I dont need drawings on blackboard. You both move forward without one overpowering the other. I also like male voices teaching gospel principles . I like learning by listening, not by watching so hopefully you continue the same way and those who want to watch, will win too! These are some of the easons Talking scripture has been my favorite. And you both are knowledgeable and can set the scenes for our times. Now I will " watch" this interview. Its much less fantastical to believe that seer stones and hats were used to translate a book as it would be to believe back in Joseph's day, that in our day, we would have a handheld device and be able to ask it any question, or be able to talk to people all the way around the world in real time seeing their faces.

    Don't be shy about Joseph Smith using the animal skin hat without the seerstone or with the the stone: He was blessed: he was a seer! When he looked in the hat he saw the words in english l believe: l think Bradley said that Joseph Smith may have had more than just what is recorded in the JS testimony of the First Vision! So it was a miracle definitely! Nothing to be shy or embarrassed that investigators get turned off with! It sounds crazy but Joseph Smith was a seer: So be bold: Yeah l love the Talking Scriptures! The errors that Mormon was talking about are due to the difficulties in engraving, where an error of writing down something can't be corrected. They are evident when they say things such as "they buried their weapons of peace, or rather, they buried their weapons of war for peace." That was an error that was corrected. Similar things are found in the Hebrew scriptures, but weren't corrected by a prophet.

    Re Sacrament Meeting (I don't do this either, yet, but) Elder Richard G Scott went to all meetings with a pen and notebook and took notes (he inferred this explicitly in a Gen Con talk). He not only noted what he was hearing but also of the impressions he was receiving as he listened. It appears that he also left room on the page for more because he said he would review those notes later and receive more impressions.
    How quickly would the understanding and faith of all of us keep forward if each of us did this? And so why am I not doing it yet?

    At 1:11:25 a box indicates Nephi used Hebrew script and Egyptian language.
    That is opposite my understanding. His Hebrew script was not the Hebrew script that we see in the dead sea scrolls. It was the head of a bull and stick figures for consonants, also without vowels. It was be cause of the babylonian exile to come when Hebrew script gets the script that we are familiar with. It is because the old script was so laborious to write that Nephi used Egyptian characters (hyratic, likely, not hieroglyphic) to make writing easier and to fill a small space with more information.

    I really think my generation (Gen X) and before, are the generations of faith. These next generations seem to need more proof to believe. It’s sad to me, that some of my kids are in this latter category. They want to believe, but they need more tangible proof to do so.
    My oldest knew that Santa wasn’t real at five years old, because she just knew an old, fat man would not fit down our wood stove chimney pipe. And she’s the same way with the Book of Mormon, angels, and all the rest of it. I was never like that. I still believe in Santa 🥹. These up and coming generations aren’t like most of us older folk are. Faith should be enough, but it just isn’t anymore.

    At 10:30 I LOVE the comment about instead of saying the world that made the Bible to flip it around and say the world made by the Bible. This is a profound paradigm shift that goes right along with what the Sealed Portion happens to be. I'm referring to the book sealed with seven seals mentioned in Revelation 5:1-5. The seven days of creation are the seven seals. They are the prophetic master blueprint of the seven millennia of the old world. Biblical creation is the SCRIPT for a cycle of human civilization. We are entering into the new world of America and the LDS Restoration of the Priesthood and the Church are literally the Adam and Eve of the new world. We were placed in the Garden in Jackson Co. Missouri, but we transgressed there and were driven out by the extermination order. We were clothed in the garment in Nauvoo and then driven out into the lone and dreary world of the Great Basin. We are still under the buffetings of the adversary until our day of redemption comes, which is when Adam receives the further light and knowledge and is able to be sanctified and redeemed. Our future as the LDS is going to change dramatically when we can show the world that we are "man" of day 6 of creation. Protestantism is the "beasts". Christianity and Islam are the fish and fowls of day 5. And, of course, Jesus is the greater light to rule the day of day 4. Once creation is seen in this manner, the term SCRIPTURES will make a whole lot more sense.

    Loved this. Very informative. It ranged all over and I loved all of it, except for this assertion I've been hearing a lot lately, that Boomers-GenXers only valued loyalty, but Millenials-GenZers value authenticity. Seems a little pre-judge-y and self-congratulatory. You might want to rethink how you represent this concept. I don't think it does any favors for Geezers or Youngsters to pit themselves against each other like that.

      Joseph had a manuscript of the plates from the time of Lehi to King Benjamin’s reign. Martin took them to show his family, and this paper manuscript was “lost” (stolen). When Joseph began translating after this tragic event, he began in the Book of Mosiah, where we read King Benjamin’s discourse in Mosiah 1-6. In June of 1829, Joseph translated the Small Plates, or what we know as 1-2 Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, Omni.

I don’t buy the explanation that Bethlehem is only 6 miles south of Jerusalem from some of the people in the church have stated.

    • @talkingscripture
      @talkingscripture  9 месяцев назад +1

      It doesn’t say “in” Jerusalem. It says “at” Jerusalem. There is a difference. “At” can mean nearby or close. If you go visit Jerusalem, and if the wall of partition was removed, it’d be a relatively short trip!

    • @oatmealmonkey9130
      @oatmealmonkey9130 9 месяцев назад

      Another consideration: Alma's talking to a people that came from Jerusalem to the other side of the world five hundred years earlier. I wouldn't be surprised if their old world geography wasn't the best. I don't bother telling people which smallish town I'm from unless they know the local geography, I tell them what big city it was near.

I love the general authorities and our prophets. They are truly inspired by God as to the things they prepare for us because we need to hear them in our day! Just my opinion!

    • @talkingscripture
      @talkingscripture  7 месяцев назад +1

      I apologize for my comment. I meant to express the sentiment that when we are being recorded, we speak differently. Recorded remarks open the speaker to more intense scrutiny, opening them up to later criticism and accounatability. Being recorded can induce a touch of anxiety, knowing that one's comment can be misunderstood or taken out of context. In essence, the act of recording introduces a heightened sense of observation and potential judgment, which can lead to more self-conscious and deliberate communication. The opposite can be true when one is able to communicate their feelings knowing they are not being recorded. Having been present at different settings with the general authorities, to me, there is something more spontaneous and less guarded when they are in a setting that is not broadcast to the world, but rather presented to a small audience. The comment I made to the Paul brothers was off the cuff and reflected this view, although not delivered very well. I did not think it would be in the recording and again I apologize for any offense given.

    Wish the history nonsense would just stop and we can focus on today, the scriptures, 20:39 in gaining knowledge that’s useful to guide us for our day. Get over the history stories because we may have no firsthand or definite knowledge of whatever happened. It’s ridiculous to waste this much time on the past either arguing or discussing opinions over and over resulting in the same old conclusions.
