Well personally I'm glad they didn't keep it, because it wasn't in the books. Draco never explicitely did the right thing and I think that's the point of his character: he was lost and scared and he was mostly scared for his life. So doing that in front Voldemort and the Death Eaters is completely out of character and I think it is the reason why JK. Rowling never made him explicitely stand up for the good side.
So I think it is the only deleted scene that I am glad it didn't make it in the movie, that would have ruined the essence of the character for me (not to the extend of what they did to Ginny's character though)

They didn't put it cause it made no sense as harry disarmed Draco in the Malfoy manor and Draco lost his mother's wand at the room of requirements and Lucius already gave his wand to voldemort. By this point Malfoy family was wandless and Draco giving him a wand made no sense, as none of them had any wands to give

Another climax edit was that in the books Neville immediately kills the snake when he pulls the sword out of the hat. And the way Voldemort dies is that, Harry used a disarming spell while Voldemort used a killing curse. So Harry having the Elder Wand, it overpowered Voldemort's and so the Disarming spell won the duel, and in the process of Voldemort's wand flipping from Voldemort's hand to Harry's, the killing curse hit Voldemort and he died.

If you notice in the movie deathly hallows part 2, when Draco is called to the other side by Voldemort, he doesn’t go. When his father calls him over, he still doesn’t go. But when his mother holds out her hand and he looks at her, he knows he can’t leave her, no matter what that means for him. Narcissa is the one person in his family who didn’t abuse him, who loved him and put him over anything. And Draco’s love for his mom outweighed anything in his mind, even doing the right thing. THATs why they didn’t keep that scene in. Because Draco as a character just wouldn’t be able to look at his moms face and ignore her.

To add a tiny bit more context:
-- Dudley saying he didn't think Harry was a waste of space: in the book, the scene plays out almost exactly the same way, except he also says "you saved my life." (from the dementors). It's also revealed by JKR on her Pottermore website, that Dudley and Harry maintained a somewhat civil relationship after the Battle of Hogwarts, and that they kept in touch and got together for holidays so that each others' kids could be in each others' lives.
-- Putting a taboo on Voldemort's name (a spell that can locate people when saying certain keyword(s)) was a bit more expanded on in the books, from the very first book, Hagrid describes how scared people are to say the name because of how traumatic everyone's experiences of the first war were, so even after his defeat in Godric's Hollow after trying to kill Harry, people were still afraid to say the name. Ron remarks that the only people who weren't afraid to say the name were people that were opposed to Voldemort enough to actually fight him (like Dumbledore, and the Order of the Phoenix), so they put the taboo on the name itself to track down those people.
--"Let us go, you filthy Squib!" ... a 'squib' is the opposite of a muggleborn witch/wizard (like Hermione), in that they are a non-magical person from a magical family. Mr Filch has grown up in the magical world, but has no magical powers.

Heyo, just checking in to say that in that one deleted scene, in which Filch locked the slytherins in the dungeon she called him a squib, not squid. Squib are essentially the opposite of muggleborns, both parents are magical and they themselves have no magical powers. Filch is one of them as Harry finds out during his first year when he was in Filches office and saw a letter from a course for Squibs. Highly recommend the Books/Audiobooks, so many characters get more fleshed out, Petunia for example. When Harry arrives with Dudley she actually knows what a Dementor is, because she heard of it before and many many many other moments which make the Dursleys and basically all other characters more 3D and even adds some nice characters like Peeves the Poltergeist, much more Dobby, who temporarily worked at Hogwarts, Hermionie who started an organization to help Houseelves and so on.

She's scared and angry. She likely blames Harry for the death of her sister. Which, he sort of is. I mean, it was really a domino effect of people doing things. But, Voldemort is a scary, magical lizard man. Harry lives in her very house. Is it right for her to hate him? Of course not. But she is a person with feelings that make sense. It is hard to say how genuine Petunia is. She was jealous of Lily and treated her badly. But it may be that she really loved her a great deal but simply struggled with her feelings. Which would make her comment to Harry more compassionate than anything. She never let him in at all before. Something is more than nothing.

I've always really loved the more subtle approach the final cut of the movie had with Draco's character. It walks the line of feeling sympathy for him without giving him a full fledged redemption arch, which I feel would have been a bit out of character for him. So much of his arch was about how much fear and trepidation he was feeling about his family and the things he was being asked to do. He became a really sympathetic character to me in that sense, but he also never struck me as someone very brave at all. I might be a bit more influenced by the book versions in my head though. It's hard to separate sometimes. haha

At one point, I kinda thought that Draco may have paralleled RAB a bit during HBP. Once we got into TDH, I could picture Regulus trying to hide how he was changing long enough to try to defeat Riddle, but didn't make it as far as he intended. That must have felt so harrowing for Regulus, but he ended up having an arc much closer to Snape than Draco. That said, I could see where Snape might see something relatable in Draco during those last couple of years. I think that was demonstrated in the opening TDH scene when Riddle murdered Burbage. We were shown both Snape & Draco's faces. I figured what Snape was hiding on the inside was shown on Draco's face.

The scenes with Dudley and Petunia were actually in the books, and written very well. I personally would've loved to have had those scenes in the movies. Draco's action of throwing the wand to Harry however, was not in the books, and I think JKR opposed to the scene because of that same fact. I'm actually glad it wasn't included in the movies as it gives a very fleshed out redemption arc for Draco at the battle, which never happened. Harry was presumed dead by Voldy and friends, so they had Hagrid carry his lifeless form with his wand (formerly Draco's) in hand. There waa no wand tossing needed in the first place. It would've given Draco credit for something he didn't do in the most important part of the war. In all honesty, Narcissa played a bigger role in the win, by lying to Voldemort about Harry being dead - and even that she did only so she could get to Draco in the castle. Draco at that time didn't really turn sides, mostly just feared for his and his mother's life. Basically, Draco did all those what could be "redeeming" actions (like not identifying Harry in the Manor) out of fear and fear alone, not with any intent to do the right thing. I believe JKR wanted to emphasize that not all baddies deserve an immediate redemption. I guess it was slightly implied that he had second thoughts, especially regarding his and his mom's safety, but that was all it was. Not to be harsh or anything, but JKR once mentioned that Draco represented cowardice, and that people should not romanticize him. His character development happened a bit later in his life, and happened over time - especially once him and his mom was rid of Lucius (as written in HP and the Cursed Child play).

    • @PristinePerceptions
      @PristinePerceptions 2 года назад +30

While "not all baddies deserve redemption" is a fair view to have, I feel JKR has personal grudges that she wishes to keep in the story. And it shows in things like locking up the entire slytherin house in the dungeons, or not allowing Draco's redemption arc, or the absence of any redeeming/humanizing qualities to Umbridge (even Voldy gets humanized), etc. It almost feels like she has associated the characters with people in her own life that she has not forgiven.

    • @joseabito-on442

@@PristinePerceptions of course! It is understandable that she's applied a lot of things in her life to her written work, and there's bound to be some bias. I personally find the Slytherins being locked in the Dungeons to be absurd as well (which, to be fair, only happened in the movie and didn't exist in the books). I really appreciate how Umbridge was characterized, though, as I do think she represents an idea that plenty of characters aside from the main villain can represent a worse evil - especially with her as she unfortunately is a very realistic portrayal. I also appreciate Draco's character's portrayal because although he didn't have a clear cut redemption arc in the book, he does represent a person who has grown up in the wrong environment, and is humanized in a way that he feels and shows abject fear in the face of an impossible task at such a young age, and prioritizes himself and his mother despite it all. I think these things are redemption enough for his character, despite how vague they may be..

Petunia lost Lily long before Lily was killed as well. In a way, magic took Lily away from her when they were children; she even tried being accepted to Hogwarts and wrote a letter to Dumbledore but he could not allow it. Her hurt and resentment separated her from her sister until it was too late. It seems Harry represented the thing that broke up their family and made her feel inferior, and she couldn’t get past it. Maybe in her mind, mistreating Harry and favoring Dudley was a way to get back at the magic world.

Also, just like Severus, imagine that he'd actually be in the history of the Battle of Hogwarts as one of the biggest hero.. and would be a big inspiration for kids (Slytherin or not) who are raised the same. 💔

In the books Aunt Petunia has many scenes where she had a lot of good in her. Unlike Uncle Vernon, Petunia knows a lot about the wizarding world, because as a child she was obsessed about going to Hogwarts. She creates hate towards her sister, who was a witch and also hated the whole wizarding world became she wasn't a witch like her sister and so was rejected an admission to Hogwarts.
Each time Vernon tries to remove Harry from his house, Petunia stops Vernon, because she knows very well that the safest place for Harry is that house, because she too provides Harry with the same protection that Lilly gave HarryHarry before she died.

I felt like his uncle and Dudley really mirrored Lucius and Draco Malfoy. The Dursleys abused Harry and spoiled Dudley but demanded Dudley treat Harry badly as well. It was abusive for Dudley In a Different way. Lucious abused Draco non stop but gave him everything, he also made Draco feel like it was his place to go after Harry and mudbloods etc. Draco could never leave his family because his mother was the only one who protected and showed him love , he was surrounded by a family of psychopaths. (FYI - Dracos mom when bent over Harry to see if he is dead asks Harry if Draco’s alive? I assume Harry said yes. I think she felt she owed Harry and that is why she to.d Voldemort Harry was Dead. That was a huge part) ALSO I Think Harry was struck when he saw his father bullying Snapes memory. I WAS SO GLAD HE GOT TO KNOW SNAPE THROUGH THE PENSIVE.

The Oak (Now): so did you see that? Let me explain- I've been consuming constant HP info and learning from my new online bffs in the Potter Fandom bc I crave more Potter. "I wouldnt have minded 16 HP movies." When can we watch Fantastic Beasts? I'm so ready!
Edit: I'm so glad you love it 💜 as soon as you vocalize your doubt, I thought "He doesn't know what he's in for, just wait and see buddy"
Double Edit: If you want more Potter content, there's entire documentaries about how they created the creatures, set designs, stunts (with clips of the actors laughing while suspended by wires etc) and interviews with the author discussing the movies and how she came up with quidditch and the dementors etc. So, aside from fan theories, if you want more from the actual original source + the actors, I would look up those docu's

Yeah the Dudley moment should have been in it for sure. Considering what we know about dementors via the book and the movie, you remember what the dementors do-suck out your happiness and hope; you relive your worst moments until they suck you dry (pause).
I like that in the Order of the Phoenix as Harry tells his aunt and uncle what happened, he sees Dudley different. Dudley was such a dick to him so it’s like ‘what kind of negativity/struggles could he ever have experienced? Who are you?’ I wish that thought of Harry was conveyed in some way whether in what we saw or by adding this scene.

That’s because Draco didn’t do that in the book Harry had Draco’s wand and had gone under his invisibility cloak because all hell had broken loose when Voldemort placed the sorting hat over Neville’s head and set it on fire along with Neville. I was a bit miffed at the movies for not including Harry’s explanation of how the wand was not working and how none of the spells Voldemort was preforming on the people Harry protected were lasting or binding. Because Harry having gone to the woods to die at the hands of Voldemort to protect the people that he loved at Hogwarts, that act of love had effectively created the same Magical shield his mother had created for Harry when she died. That Voldemort fell for that action twice showed that he had learned nothing about love and how it’s a magic greater than any other.

The last scene is actually the only one I’m glad they didn’t include. It wasn’t included in the book, and seems way out of character for Draco. His redemption came when he didn’t give them up at Malfoy Manor. The movies added a lot of details that weren’t in the books, but that would be just too big of a plot twist to add.
The thing I like most about Harry Potter characters are that they’re realistic. JK wrote real humans, not movie characters. Draco’s character arc and redemption was believable, and not stretched just for entertainment.

    • @keenabees
      @keenabees 2 года назад +4

Yeah. At that moment in time, Draco's character is pretty much summed up in the moment after Harry rescues him from the Room of Requirement. If I'm not mistaken Draco runs off and they find him later trying to appease to the Death Eaters saying that he's on their side so they don't hurt him. The trio helps him again, then Ron punches Malfoy and says, “And that's the second time we've saved your life tonight, you two-faced bastard!'"
I think we can find a lot of nuance and even sympathy in Draco's character, but in the books he's just so grimy and giving him a full-blown redemption like the wand throwing just feels way too out of place with the character. Not all that realistic, but maybe a bit more later on in life. I'm glad they didn't include it. They touched on enough of Draco's character without it.

Oak's story about when he was in 4th grade resonates with me so much, and about how even if you weren't a full on bully, many of us have things we regret from when we were kids and maybe we could have been nicer to people. I know I have major regrets about the way I treated some kids in 5th and 6th grade. I was never a full on bully, but I certainly picked on some kids and it makes me sick to my stomach when I think about some of the things I teased kids about (like, specifically, teasing a kid for getting his shoes from Payless, which I'm so very, very ashamed of in my adult years... and Billy Madison is also exactly what I thought of, too, Oak; I tried to friend one guy in particular on Facebook specifically because I wanted to be able to send him a message apologizing for being an asshole when we were kids but, and I don't blame him for this, he did not accept the request). I think they left it out because it wasn't in the books....I have the feeling they had big discussions about whether or not to change the ending in such a big way. I only saw this deleted scene recently, and personally I think it might have taken away from Harry/Ron/Hermione/Neville in their own respective big moments. When reading the books, I got the feeling that Draco & his family were showcasing just how challenging it is to break those ingrained lessons. Its a more complicated lesson, but just that small change - walking away, Narcissa essentially saving Harry, those are huge changes. Keep up the great content & comments!! There are some pretty good fan-film videos out there. My favorite is Severus Snape and the Marauders (a Harry Potter Prequel) by Broad Strokes. I think you'd really enjoy this one. They did another with Grendelwald and Dumbledor in their youth although you may want to wait on that one until you've seen the Fantastic Beast movies. Also check out Sisters of House Black by Kelsey Ellison. About the deleted scenes: we watched the Dursley's start 4 out of the first 6 movies. We developed a bond with them through those films (even if we didn't like them). They were such a big part of Harry's life. To me they were 'main' characters to the story like everyone else we met. Maybe even more so. I would have kept the Dursley scenes in. It would have been a good 'closure' moment for that part of the story. The only other one I wished they kept and expanded on would be Draco passing his wand to Harry. That was Draco's redemption moment. To see him just walk off with his parents...I thought they were cowards (first time viewing that is). Thanks guys! I needed this. 😎👍

She even wrote a letter to Dumbledoor and asked if she could go. I think that he wrote back and apologized that that wasn’t the way that it worked. But ever sense then, she basically shunned her sister.

In the Dungeon scene. They called Finch a squib. Which means he was born to Magical parents but doesn’t have any magic himself.
You all should read the books there is so much more in the books.
Also Audible has all the audiobooks.

Love that you guys have been so accepting with Harry Potter .. a lot of people judge people like me simply because I love the books and have lived through them!!! Thank you 🙏🏻
One of the things that doesn’t come up at all in the movies but the books (in the Order of the Phoenix and later) is why did Dumbledore decide to let Harry be with the Dursleys - is because of the old magic that protected Harry from Voldemort when Lily died protecting him. Petunia had the same blood as Lily’s so as long as Harry was around Petunia till he is an adult, Voldemort will not be able to touch him.
In Order of the Phoenix book, when Harry saved Dudley from Dementors, Petunia thinks he is the cause behind Dudley’s temporary dementia and gets angry enough to let Harry go, but the Dursleys receive a Howler at the moment saying - “Remember” and Petunia backs down decides to let Harry continue to stay with them … so since the beginning Dumbledore had explained the importance of Harry staying with her to Petunia .. we never get to know this until the 5th book which is simply amazing!!

I love you guys and I LOVE the discussions. It's what makes us connect through this amazing series. I got the harry potter book for christmas when I was a kid, from my aunt... I was maybe 7 or 8. My mom read the 1st and most of the 2nd to me... and then I couldn't wait for her and took over reading them myself. It's been a part of my life ever since and at 31 I have restarted the series AGAIN. I just love watching people fall in love with this series for ALL it has to offer. As I grew up with the books.... I definitely got different things/lessons out of it at different stages in my life. All the metaphors and representstions of life in this magical series is just incredible. Thank you, thank you for sharing the journey with us! I can't wait for what's next. ❤

I agree with so much of what oak said about Draco, whether you like or dislike him, he could've been such a good character example of growing in a prejudiced or horrible household and being able to overcome it. He never got redemption in the books or movies but he really could've been a good opportunity to show kids growing up in said households. Sadly Jkr didn't take that opportunity when writing the books

It's great to see you all enjoy Harry Potter even after the movie reactions have ended! You never cease to make me smile.
A fun fan theory I would suggest looking into is from Film Theory by Mattpat. Specifically the one where he discusses there being more than one "Chosen One" (someone else other than Harry). It's quite interesting and I think you all would enjoy watching it.

Bottom line, I think that is why Petunia makes sure Harry was allowed to stay on Privet Drive every year. She was jealous that she wasn’t chosen for Hogwarts. She called Lilly a freak because of it, and yet when Dumbledore asked her to allow Harry to live with her and her family, the love she had for her sister, gave her the strength to agree. Yes, they treated him like crap but he was always allowed to return, which kept him safe when he is away from Hogwarts. I think these scenes should have been left in.

Book reviews from Oak or everyone would be perfection. In my mind you'll find the books incomparable to the movies especially after the 3rd book. The characterization is 1000 stronger and there's alot left out! The true source and its a must!

It's so funny and cute how Oak turned out to be the biggest fan out of you 3 😁 It just goes to show the depth and emotional impact of the HP story that it made a skeptic like him talk about personal events in his life, discuss the metaphors for racism and other messages, delve into character motivations etc. 👍
The scene with Malfoy throwing the wand, I read that it's JKR who didn't want it in, because it's basically too heroic for Malfoy. I agree with the decision. I like that things remain realistic when it comes to his arc, he's not bad like before but also not a hero.
The scene with Dudley should really have been included in I think. But Petunia I don't care. She was very jealous of her sister and she never showed sadness over her death. In the 1st movie she even tells Harry in a brutal way that Lily "got herself blown up" so whatever she says now is too little too late 🤷‍♀️ I don't remember how that last Dursleys scene plays out in the book. I have started rereading the series as I realized I forgot many details!

I definitely recommend listening to the Dursleys Departing chapter of Hallows. Two members of the Order of the Phoenix escort the Dursleys and are there calling them out for not saying goodbye to Harry. When Dudley talks to Harry, Harry tells them that for Dudley, that was like him saying "I love you".
I would have loved for that scene to have had more focus in the film. It would have kept people's minds open to the possibility of Harry potentially finding them again, and even maybe becoming closer with Dudley.
There's a great fan fiction out there of Dudley having a daughter who ends up going to Hogwarts, and Harry kind of walking him through what it's like and even reuniting with Petunia.
Once again I really love watching your reactions and have been watching them back to back pretty much. Great job🤙

As always seems to happen, I strongly agree with Oak’s takes, especially the one about Draco tossing his wand to Harry before the final confrontation. That should have stayed in both for the heavy reasons Oak gave and for simple continuity. Harry had no wand when Hagrid carried him in, which was confirmed in the previous movie when Hermione apologized for getting his wand broken. Then suddenly he has one. It was jarring enough that it bothered me when I first saw the movie. Where did that wand come from?
The transfer of Draco’s wand to Harry was also foreshadowed when the rescued wandmaker tells Harry that this wand used to be Draco’s but “I sense its allegiance has changed” because Harry had disarmed Draco. We don’t see that wand given back to Draco, but it must have been. He had been using his mother’s wand in the meantime, but that one has no allegiance to either Draco or Harry.
There is also another scene of redemption for Draco in the previous movie. When the Death Eaters caught Harry when he was disguised and looked disfigured, Bellatrix suspected his identity and demanded that Draco confirm it was Harry. Draco knew who it was, but he bravely stood his ground. He saved Harry’s life by refusing to betray him. In a later scene, Harry recalls this and asks Draco why he didn’t betray him. Maybe the showrunners thought this was enough redemption for Draco. If so, I strongly disagree. The passing of the wand SHOULD have been shot clearly and included. It’s pivotal for multiple reasons and would have taken a minute or less.
Oak did us all a favor by immersing himself in the scenes and discussions before making this video. His insights were pure gold.

Watching this a year later, after Oak has already watch a ton of "teen" movies, makes me think this is when his mind opened up to enjoy those types of movies. I am here for it too.
