A lot of people are coming full circle back to the TD42 because sensibly modified and maintained they're actually a really solid engine. Mated with the GU driveline you have what is arguably the best all round 4wd ever made. Plenty of people are now buying crate engine td42ti's these days because for 15-20k that engine (sensibly modified and maintained) will do 600 thou km plus before you'd consider a rebuild. Doing 50 thou km at a year that's 12 fucken years of hassle free 4wd'ing. Married up to a GU/GQ you get the whole 4wd package. No stupid electronic switches for 4wd modes, no bullshit sensors chiming away at you, no stupid emission devices limiting the efficiency of your diesel requring dpf burns or some other manifold clean every couple thousands kms, one of the easiest engine bays to work on unlike some retarded diesels that have starter motors inside the engine itself and the list goes on.
Couldn't have said it better myself. TD's are a super solid engine if power levels are kept sensible, and they will definitely go 500,000km + with regular maintenance.....i know because i own one that's well on its way to 700k and have mates who have TD's that are approaching 1 million kms. I've been telling people for years that the new generation of small capacity common rail diesels are going to give their owners serious grief in the long term. As far as I'm concerned, EGR and DPF technology is really just a knee-jerk (and poorly thought out) reaction to emissions regulations.
Young Gus, love every moment you get with your folks mate, sooner or later we all have to move on to the upper room. Life isn't easy for our loved ones when we are gone but it is better living with a head full of cool memories than bad regrets. Don't ask me how I know.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at around the 30:00 minute mark you mentioned the rectangular cut-outs in the fan shround, and I believe there should be stiff flaps there that seal the shroud at low speed for proper fan vacuum through the radiator, but bend open at high speeds to allow more airflow through the radiator core. My 2005 Nissan Armada (US version, like the Titan truck) had a similar set of flaps on one side.
the holes in the radiator shroud are for rubber flappers. when closed, it forces the air to be pulled through the radiator by the fan. When you're blasting along down the highway, they allow air to flow straight through - thus giving you good cooling at speed (since if the air had to make a 90 degree twice through the fan shroud, it would work worse.
@@theskidfactory that Camaro you had hidden in a prior episode has a similar design. Basically it's like mud flaps that hang down and as the vehicle drives down the street, they open to allow air through... but we don't have diesel Patrols (aka Pathfinders) here in the States - so I don't know whether that shroud is up against the radiator or if there is space ... the Bolivian one I worked on was missing all of that...
I know these are common in Australia but as an American I think these are the coolest trucks in my mind I am absolutely in love with these things and want one so bad. I’m so bummed we don’t get more diesels here.
Great father and son project!! I had to change my clutch recently and learnt there’s supposed to be a .4mm step in the flywheel where the clutch bolts on, when it’s machined flat there is less pressure on the plate! Cheers.
Yeah on a patrol, mine is a GU TD42 ti so maybe there is a difference with the older ones. But standard it has a step and a UFI clutch needs a step, if yours is specced flat should be all good. Cheers
Make the noise!!! 😉 A lengthy but enjoyable episode to watch guys. Nice to see Gus following in Al's footsteps and ain't afraid to get his hands dirty 👍
The fuel pump is part of the charm of this engine. I had my TD42T pump reconditioned (not by All States Diesel - I live in NZ) then a few months later the fuel shutoff valve failed. It’s a cheap part, especially in relation to the cost of the recon, which you’d think they would’ve replaced as part of the recon!
Thankfully I had good luck with my ZD30s, always did the preventative maintenance, like the egr blank, catch can, swirl mod or the dawes valve controller. Oh yeah and I'm sooo jealous of Gus!! This is alot of peoples dream setup for their Patrol!!
This is probably be my favorite episode yet and I have seen them all. Can't put my finger on it but it was great. Keep up the great work boys and my wife is starting to ask about my skid factory clothing collection.
The best engine for patrol is bmw 3.0 diesel the famous m57 engine! Super reliable and probably the strongest 3L diesel there is. It has massive tuning potential without touching the internals, probably over 1000nm without touching internals! That engine is no joke. Basically the 2jz of the diesels! 300hp with just a tune. No overheating problems like mercedes om606, no hidden problems just pure power! Check top offroad romania and see what that engine is capable of!💪💪💪
Turbo yoda has never been driven in a m57 patrol 😂😂. I tell you man that thing is monster! Put hybrid turbo and injectors and pump from bmw 535d and you got 420hp 900nm 😂😂 just like that. At those figures the patrol drivetrain starts to break, the axles… No stock internals engine can brake patrol drivetrain except the bmw m57. no overheating no braking cranks no melting pistons non of dat 💩. the rods on that engine are massive. If you get the biturbo m57 from the bmw 535d then you just need a hybrid turbo and you can achieve a 450-500hp and over 1000nm.
thanks for being honest about the ZDs, Al - the late model CRD always gets tarred with the same brush - but its a very different animal. Completely agree about the displacement issues though, the lack of torque is the biggest issue with these cars. love mine still, but a TD would be nice....
The ZD30 really are the black sheep due to the heads cracking at the glow plugs, turbo failure and the fuel pumps. Thought Nissan would have learnt by the time they developed the YD25, but this engine was a worse design. They get tarnished for good reason. FYI if you do replace the head on a ZD, make sure its the Spanish built head and not the Chinesium built head, you will thank me later!

The pitting in the coolant pump housing - comes from either/and/or using the wrong antifreeze or not changing antifreeze to manufacturer spec. Old antifreeze transfers stray current and aluminum is the best conductor to ground.... at the slight issue of becoming a sacrificial anode. (9:27)... as a second problem, overheating usually occurs on motors that haven't had their fluid changed because the antifreeze becomes a sludge in the lower-flow passages of an engine.

Those two large "holes" in the fan shroud(passenger side) IIRC are for two large but thin rubber flaps that are 'top hung" but are free to "flap".. The theory being that if the vehicle is moving slowly with little outside air being forced through the radiator from the front of the vehicle by it's forward speed... the flaps would fall down and the fan would then "suck" these flaps and seal them against the shroud... allowing the fan to maximise draw over the entire area of the radiator. The faster the vehicle moves forward the more air forced through the radiator and at a certain speed the force lifts the rubber flaps off the "seal" of the shroud allowing "full flow" through the radiator.... the thermo fan hub also "shutting off" so relieving the horsepower drain on the engine.... Of course you could put another fans in each of those gaps instead of the rubber flaps....
Amazing video as always, love how you guys are entertaining but also allow us to learn and actually benifit and gain knowledge off of these video. keep it up!
You should take a look at the Mercedes OM 606, that is also a very decent engine! Guy called Diesel Pumps UK also had a ZD30 in his Patrol, installed a OM606 and even with 35inch tyres! 4H smokes all 4 wheels! Best part is, sounds like a Toyota Supra!! 6kRPM and its Diesel! Looks really sick and reliable. I gotta say though its pretty shitty for the ZD 30's heater pipes to bleed it, My Patrol with the TB45E heater pipes are way above the engine with a little pipe comin out the side of it with a small rubber cap. So just remove the cap and it will bleed easy.
Are you guys a fan of LPG? Have you done much with it? In Melbourne you can still get it for 80-90c a litre in a lot of places. With fuel prices it has become a worth while option again.
Best Ford I have owned ford fiesta turbo diesel 4L to 100 km 270 k radiator plastic overflow filters and brakes once .Original tyres continental 120k .Same clutch 4 learner drivers sweet
Al is in my mind. Imhave always said that the ZD30 is just too small for the GU. It was a Renault influence. The Europeans have been doing small capacity diesels in cars for years. It just didn't work in this case.
Love the videos as always guys but I’ve got to ask…what’s with this new camera technique everyone seems to be using of constantly walking side to side during a piece to camera?? Drives me nuts.
Are you gonna do the Aussie Roadtrip you talked about back when you did the first Patrol? Maybe they could do it with several RUclipsrs in a Convoy? Could do some well known 4wd trails to start with like Stockton Beach, Birdsville track or even try your hand at Canning Stock Route. I personally loved doing the Gascoigne River and the vast tidal cave system up near Karratha you can only see when the tide is out obviously , did it back in the early 80s and wish to do it again before I die.. Anyone wheeling up in Northern 'Dub btw?
I may have missed it in the video....and if I did I apologize for making you explain it again... but how do you go about circulating the coolant in that secondary system for the water to air cooler? A belt driven pump or an electric? Love the show.... keep up the good work.
Take it back about m57 mine makes solid 260hp without a sweat only with remap. That would be more than enough for this patrol 😂 Anyway awesome work guys🫡
Think he's refering too the low down performance. Like how driving a 90hp Cummins is way different too driving a 90hp vw due too the different torque and power delivery. But in that respect m57s torque curve is alot steeper than the td42s off idle. Common rail DI is almost always gonna have a edge on low down torque Vs td42's idi.. obviously td42 extra displacement will make up alot lost on the idi
He's not talking horsepower, he's talking about natural torque. Like how the thing pulls even without boost. Generally speaking, that is what larger displacement is good for. I don't believe that Al is saying you can't make big high end power from small displacement.
@@theskidfactory i’m gonna admit i might have taken this to personal, and now understand reason behind engine choice. Another big advantage for td42 i see simplicity in electrical side, pure mechanical unit, which my current m57 is more on opposite side with pjezzo direct injectors and all the stuff around to control it. Thank you for response!
13:00 you were looking for the energy from your heat source to be converted into work-done efficiently, less energy being put into the environment (soot, vibration, excess heat etcetera)
Agree on the zd30 not being big enough...but a lot of us are stuck with them and we're trying to squeeze the best out of these lemons...any chance down the track you guys may be able to look closer as the zd30 common rail and offer some mods or any improvements?
It's basic engineering as it's a factory option. We still plate it as it will have no 3rd row seats etc. The cost of a plate is worth it if getting pulled over.
Epic video lads, can anyone here shed some light on why Al say's a top mount isn't a good idea? I've got an old bus with a TD and want to turbo it, going top mount would let me pop an oil drain into the vac pump oil drain and save pulling the sump off. A top mount would probably be best for drainage here....
A very informative episode I to have a ZD30 one day I am going to engine swap to a TD42 and put an automatic in it añd guess who's going to do it you guys cheers legends 😄

Hard work pays off ! Great job ! 👍
Cheers from Transilvania.
Roger - the star of the show for sitting on Woody!
Nothing wrong with a zd30 if you do the right things to it big shout out to tillex love there products
Are you guys a fan of LPG? Have you done much with it? In Melbourne you can still get it for 80-90c a litre in a lot of places. With fuel prices it has become a worth while option again.
Yay for Townsville parts. Next time ya up here, make a cruise/meet night !!
Make sure you bring a carton of chills or 4 😉
I just want to say I appreciate the return of the squeaky hammer, but I know youve got more squeaks to give
Best Ford I have owned ford fiesta turbo diesel 4L to 100 km 270 k radiator plastic overflow filters and brakes once .Original tyres continental 120k .Same clutch 4 learner drivers sweet
That thing sounds great. What a great build
Al is in my mind. Imhave always said that the ZD30 is just too small for the GU.
It was a Renault influence. The Europeans have been doing small capacity diesels in cars for years. It just didn't work in this case.
Wish I had a dad like yours Gus
That wasn't love Woody, Roger is showing his dominance...
I would have thought Roger's dominance was pretty obvious.
Love the videos as always guys but I’ve got to ask…what’s with this new camera technique everyone seems to be using of constantly walking side to side during a piece to camera?? Drives me nuts.
Those are fighting words about the OM606. Plenty of grunt with an upgraded injector pump, although they're pretty lethargic in stock form.
I think a BMW X drive 3.0 world rock this thing to the moon for a 3.0L diesel 🤘
how good and informative this channel is 👍🏼
Thanks for the long episode/ TD42 stuff!
Great details.
Loving the variety on the builds and vehicles. Great content.
Tb48 is the best patrol motor 😍
I had one of those, it was a piece of shit. No better than the TB45. the disappointment was real.
You know ya getting on when you prefer having an Auto
Old Roger asserting his dominance over the lowly workshop peasant. 😁
Rhodesian ridgeback is gorgeous!
I may have missed it in the video....and if I did I apologize for making you explain it again...
but how do you go about circulating the coolant in that secondary system for the water to air cooler? A belt driven pump or an electric? Love the show.... keep up the good work.
We cover that next episode. It's a Bosch Chargecooler pump with a custom reservoir.
What he said. ^^
Yeah the TD42 🤘🤘
13:00 you were looking for the energy from your heat source to be converted into work-done efficiently, less energy being put into the environment (soot, vibration, excess heat etcetera)
Nothing better than spinning wrenches with your kids.. well done
"Welcome back to the Patrol* factory" 😂
Love your work gents, keep it up 🤙🏽
Agree on the zd30 not being big enough...but a lot of us are stuck with them and we're trying to squeeze the best out of these lemons...any chance down the track you guys may be able to look closer as the zd30 common rail and offer some mods or any improvements?
Lovin ya work fellas👍, how do yous get around the engineering side of things with a build like this??
It's basic engineering as it's a factory option. We still plate it as it will have no 3rd row seats etc. The cost of a plate is worth it if getting pulled over.
How does the ZD compare to the QD32ETI or the TD27? Sorry I am fairly new to diesels and not really into Nissans. Cheers
Great build info! Top Stuff! Smart economic power with long life.. gives more enjoyment 👍👍🤙
Another great episode guys. Well done
an hour episode of diesel goodness with the yoda himself? Sign me up
Awesome video guys the new motor sounds and looks awesome I wish you guys could perform this sort of miracle on my rodeo LOL
A very informative episode I to have a ZD30 one day I am going to engine swap to a TD42 and put an automatic in it añd guess who's going to do it you guys cheers legends 😄
Awesome guys! Can't wait to see whats coming for this truck. TD42 was never sold here in Germany. Sounds like a mighty engine. Would you let us in on transmission options and which one you chose?
5 speed manual,, shafts as thick as your wrist
