Katharine Hepburn rarely commented on the Academy Awards (except to admitting her pride in winning four times) but i do remember that she commented several times that she felt her friend Edith Evans gave the best performance of the year.
Anne Bancroft in interviews says she never really liked her role or her performance as Mrs. Robinson in the Graduate. It was not her favorite part. I saw The Graduate for the first time about 20 years ago. I can see why see wasn't so crazy about it. It is a movie that has not aged well. It is very much a film of the 1960's. Bancroft's performance was the only thing that made it even watchable.
the oscar love Katharine so much that they keep awarding her Oscar but Katharine don't give a shit attend the event. after the fourth the Oscar gave up.
I think Katherine benefited from the overdue narrative of wanting to award a legendary film icon with another Oscar, but in retrospect, they couldn’t have possibly predicted that she will go on and win again the following year for The Lion in Winter, a much more deserving win than in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
I have seen all five nominated performances multiple times and Katherine Hepburn's performance was BY FAR the weakest one. The great Kate gave a stunning performance in 'The Lion in Winter' the following year (for which she won a tied Oscar) but she was not impressive in this film. Seemingly distracted by the impending death of her man, Kate was teary eyed in almost scene in the movie even if there no need for her to be so. It seems this Oscar was just a sympathy prize. Like many, I would have also chosen Dame Edith (who also won the golden globe).
I agree, it’s easy to judge in hindsight because of the Oscars knew they would have given Katherine Hepburn another Oscar the following year, they would have most likely awarded another Actress, possibly Faye Dunaway or Anne Bancroft.
I think it’s generally conceded that Hepburn won for BOTH her and Tracy. Rod Steiger was the front runner in the Oscar race that season, so by voting for Kate, in a way they could be voting for Spencer too. I imagine Tracy came close to taking down Steiger though. Plus she was overdue for a second win. Evans really gave the best performance of the five, but she really couldn’t overcome the Tracy Hepburn sentiment. Plus I’m sure more voters saw GWCTD vs. the Whisperers.

Katharine Hepburn also got some votes because of her compassionate care for Spencer Tracy in his final months.
hard to believe this was only her 2nd win- and 33 years after her first- to get to 4 only 15 years later was phenomenal!
Edith would have been my vote.
She definitly ahould had won
Same

Faye Dunaway is utterly mesmerising.
Will you tell them who I am?

Katharine was such the right choice 🥰
She was absolutely not. Not for THIS movie.
Nope it was the weakest of the 5 nominated performances. Very forgettable.
Anne bancroft > audrey hepburn > faye dunaway > edith evans > katharine hepburn
Hard to rank...
Edith Evans should have won the Oscar. Katherine Hepburn had such an unfortunate voice.
Bancroft's year.
Kate Hepburn benefited from vote-splitting or was it a sympathy win?

the only advantage of Hepburn winning this one is that is that if she had not there may not have been a tie with Barbra Streisand the next year
Which Barbra lawfully lost 😮
How many time she didn’t appear on stage?
she attended the 1973 Oscars to present an Honorary Award - she never attended when she was nominated
@@FritzandtheOscarseven 1973 was questionable since it was a surprise appearance, Kate didn't really 'attend' that year Oscar imho
Bancroft was robbed!
This Oscar decision didn't age well. The whole movie was already dated as early as upon release.
Tough year...my favorites were Dunaway and Bancroft. Hepburn was unwatchable
I love all 5 of them. Which Hepburn do you not like?

Hepburn was dreadful in this film. Constant crying.
