    Scene in Control (2019) where your brother Dylan talks about Mr. Door in the dark place, and a writer who wrote a story about a cop. Mr. Door is a prevalent character in Alan Wake II, a game in which you spend half your time as Alan Wake trapped in The Dark Place. I'm interpreting "the writer" to be Alan Wake, and "the story about a cop" to be his Alex Casey books. Pretty crazy stuff 4 years before Alan Wake II in 2023 🤯

      It's pretty amazing how well Alan Wale and Control gel together, when you think about it.
      Control looked at Alan Wake, and told us that it was really a small part in a larger story, one case file among many in an agency's futile attempt to place scientific categories and bureaucratic organization on the supernatural.
      Alan Wake 2 looked at Control, and reminded us just how truly terrifying and mind-bending these supernatural events could be to those both with little or plenty of experience, especially when expressed through an artist.
      Both compliment each other and build off of each other. The subtext of cosmic horror remains there, and it evolves with every new entry into the Remedyverse. THAT is good writing.

    The re-write of Wake's FBI agent from the Return trailer in Quantum Break to Saga in AW2 is also interesting. Wake just uses the FBI agent that enters town and makes her his new Hero because he needs her at the time, but according to Quantum Break's fixed timeline rules, he was always going to change the character to Saga who was always going to be there and be connected to Door.

      @TheRealJohnnyHendo 7 месяцев назад +51

      @@owenchafer1083 I think Remedy has said it is separate, but I believe Quantum Break has references to the Federal Bureau of Control. Currently, Quantum Break is owned by Microsoft and Xbox which is probably the bigger reason why it's not part of the connected universe because Remedy can't make multiplatform games using it. Similar issue with Max Payne being owned by Rockstar which is why they are using Alex Casey as a bit of a Max Payne stand in.
      Essentially, Quantum Break is in a separate universe from Wake and Control, but it's all part of the Remedy Multiverse. And admittedly, Dylan talking about many worlds sounds more mulitversal than just worlds in one universe.

      @@TheRealJohnnyHendo well worlds and realities are often used interchangeably in media like this. I think there's "other worlds" that just mean other timeline variations on our own (QB vs MP vs RCU) and "other worlds" that are like different dimensions with completely alien rules. But in the mind of a writer like Sam Lake, these all coexist.
      Also QB references the Bureau of Altered World Events, not the Federal Bureau of Control. Yes, in Control it's teased that documents can update themselves to be consistent with what's new, but I don't think the BAWE got renamed to FBC. In AW2 (which I haven't played yet but have heard enough about to theorize this), it seems like Quantum Break is an alternate reality to the RCU because the RCU's doppelganger/echo to Jack Joyce is experiencing a symptom of Jack's chronon syndrome. One of the last phases of becoming a shifter is to perceive your past/present/all possible futures at once, but try working backwards down the timeline branches and you reach other junctions where another outcome could've happened. You can trace every possible cause ofevery possible effect all the way to the Big Bang, and every possible outcome of every possible outcome of every possible outcome etc. of the Big Bang becomes linked. Vastly different alternate realities have people with these unexplainable similarities to you, and then you (the shifter) can see infinite outcomes for infinite echos of yourself.
      Sometime before or during the End of Time, Jack is starting to feel the consciousnesses of these infinite selves and they are starting to become aware of the link. But because their own bodies didn't get exposed to unstable chronons, they don't get any other powers like Jack did. Warlin Door/Martin Hatch is either trying to help prepare Jack's echos for this new connection and get them to fulfill other duties, or he's trying to counteract Jack perceiving him as a future threat in the QB timeline by creating trust in every Hatch/Door relationship that Jack could see. All we really know is that Hatch wants to end time in all times to relieve the pain of being a shifter, and to help other shifters by relieving their pain.
      The question though is this: What's the point of living after ending every time? There's no pain, but nothing happens anymore. It's just a bunch of omnipotent beings drifting around an infinite painting. They may have each other, but they have no purpose or new experiences or even anything to enjoy except the painting. This could be why Door is a talk show host: He's gonna help book the entertainment/activities for the shifters so they don't get too bored in their new existence.

    Yep I just replayed this and noticed this myself! Very interesting. He wouldn't teach him how he travels, on account of the Hiss. That's interesting to think: that even to Mr. Door, the Hiss are a threat and not something he's even interested in exploiting. That's a big thing too because I always suspected that Door wasn't necessarily bad. Just on his "own side." So that means that Door is not of the Taken variety. He is not the Dark Presence either because the Hiss makes the Taken stronger, like what Alan Wake said about Emil Hartman, when he was "changed into a Third Thing." The resonance changes the Dark Presence, the Dark Prescence changes the Resonance. Together, they become louder." You have to listen to all of the Wake hotline calls for that info. Including the ones where he basically admits to creating the Hiss, several times, in as many ways as possible: "Because if there was already one, why not another?" And the bits where he says, "Wake needed to write his escape. For the part about the government agency it needed to be perfect. Wake needed to convey an alien species that mimics human intelligence. Wake cut up sentences and words and drew them out of a shoebox. Wake had created a Dadaist poem." The latter of which is referring to the Hiss chant that you hear in the background.

      @user-yt6bj5hz7c Maybe we can interpret it both ways: Alan wrote about Alex Casey, and in the Dark Place, the Alex Casey he wrote is real, or that Max Payne, who Alex Casey is a reference to, exists as a real person in his own fictional universe (may James McCaffrey rest in peace). And Alan also wrote about Saga, who is something "real" from the world outside the universe of the Dark Place. I feel like at the time of Control's release, it was more the former than the latter, but hey, that's what so fun about this - you can get multiple interpretations from this, and none of them false until proven otherwise.

      @@benthasome While the easy assumption is that the Hiss-corrupted small-town Dylan is a bit "unfamiliar" with people of other races, a dark man might just describe a sort of dreamlike feeling of darkness emanating from Mr. Door. Also in Quantum Break we see that when Martin Hatch goes shifter mode, he looks like an unstable silhouette. Something about how seeing light is related to the passage of time, I think. While the dark place Dylan mentions could be The Dark Place, it could refer to somewhere like The End of Time. Maybe somewhere outside of time that can access any timeline/reality/world, kinda like those little corridors between realities in Marvel's What If..?
      Probably would have more clues if we knew what was behind the Oceanview Motel door with the Doors symbol. Interestingly, that same symbol is found in two parallel spots in the FBC Director's office, one of which leads to the Hotline.

      @@em791 Actually, from what Mr. Door says in AW2, the Dark Place is exactly what you described, a place outside time with access to many different realities. • @em791
      @em791 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@Terithian my understanding of Alan Wake 1 and American Nightmare (along with Control) was that The Dark Place is only corrupted by The Dark Presence, and that it’s basically all of imagination. Alan pulls ideas from it to write his stories, all stories/timelines/worlds exist within it to some degree, and all places of power exist within it as well. Dylan describes worlds with different spatial relationships to each other, but I don’t think that means they have to follow the same logic. World A can be on top of World B, while World B is simultaneously on top of World A, and both worlds are paradoxically inside of one another. Yggdrasil/The Oldest House might be like the tree with all worlds branching off it (including the Dark Place because that’s “in” our world and Control implies our world is actually inside TOH), but that’s just the simplest way to describe it. The infinite branches bend back around into the tree to create one big mess of worlds/stories/ideas. Even if a world seems far outside The Dark Place, you’ll find some other door that puts it back inside. Like a Penrose staircase where going down the steps is like finding a smaller Russian nesting doll inside the previous one.
      I also have some crackpot theory that The Dark Place is sort of trapped in a big pool/prison, and the Board pyramid is that prison. I can’t remember how I explained it, but basically the Board seems to desire control over reality/the paranatural/the collective unconscious like a sort of selfish entertainment studio. The inverted pyramid is a structure imprisoning the artist’s/humanity’s mind, and maybe the Dark Presence is some result of that. It’s odd that the Board never comes up during the AWE dlc despite the ability of the Hiss to merge with the Dark Presence seeming like a serious concern.

    Wait constantly shifting between worlds? In one world there was a writer who wrote about a cop and in another world that cop was real??
    This heavily implies that in Alan Wake the stories being written aren’t stories that necessarily become true but it’s bringing the characters to a world where the events are true.
    It would explain why the writings would have to be written by a good artist as anything non-descriptive and written in an unrealistic fashion could put you in any number of undesired worlds but a writer is able to specifically narrow things down to a single world with their level of description. It also ties with the theme of the spiral, Alan needs to keep writing so that he gets to the one world where his story describes perfectly the one without the dark presence being able to exploit any plot holes or omitted details.

We all use language, so generally speaking if only by intuition we all know that a 'dark fate' for instance does not in fact mean one that suffers from an absence of sunlight.

      You don't like the decision, that's fine, but maybe think before you unfurl your mindless traducements. Maybe people have actual reasons for things, even things you don't like. And maybe other people are a little less . . well, frankly, irrational than you, and are able to be at least a little discerning in their estimations.
      What a mature person would do is to say: I do not like that they did x, and here are the reasons I think it is bad from a given perspective, whether that is a consumer perspective, or from the perspective of the developer, or otherwise. Perhaps lean in to some evidence as well, and be aware that your reasoning may not be exhaustive or conclusive, this is called humility and / or self-awareness.
