Along with the other suggestion about leaders I’d work on making sure you’re keeping your rod tip pointed at the fly. This will give you a direct line to the fly with no slack. If you feel a bite you can strip set better this way. Learning to strip set is very important especially with the fishing you do because fly rods aren’t made to be able to set the hook, they have too much give and you won’t get the penetration you need. Strip setting is basically pulling the line hard with one or two good yanks to set the fly. Super important skill to master because as I’m sure you know with any fishing getting a good hook set will improve your fishing drastically. Good work though, you’re picking it up fast!

I've been fly fishing since 2017 but only freshwater. I'm living closer to Long Island now and am just getting into saltwater fly fishing this year! I can't tell you how excited this makes me that you're catching the fly fishing bug! Watching you celebrate those takes was awesome! I remember first watching your videos when I was working on Cape Cod for the summer in 2015! I also just ordered your book Striper Persuit to learn as much as I can! Tight lines John!

As you have just shown, you don't need a $800 rod! Rod tip on the water when retrieving. 6 ft level leader for that is plenty and makes landing fish much easier. Have no idea how you managed to hook everyone of those right in the corner of the mouth! LOL

Geeze-- I wish I had those beeches to fish from. As for your casting ;throw everything you learned in Louisiana out the window and try this . Put a small amount of line outside your tip and waggle the rod like a dogs tail in front of you. Try to keep your line out in front of you without it falling to the ground . Try to create uniform tight "s" shaped loops as you move the rod back and forth from side to side . Notice the rhythm of the motion. Now let out a little more line and try to let out as much as you can without it falling to the ground .Now bring the rod up and try it over head and occasionally let go of the line and see how it wants to start shooting through the guides . Now get rid of your line. Go to a shop that will sell you a neutral sink shooting head and put a spool of amnesia or some other memory less monofiliment or maybe even braid and attach that to your backing . Now try your wagging exercise again and see if you can false cast or wag your line until the shooting head which is about thirty feet long just leaves the tip of your rod then let the line sail out . Of course you will have to let your shooting line be laying on the ground or in a basket . Done right the line should sail like a rocket with a couple of false casts (wags )and just let it fly where ever you aim it . Also let your delivery when the rod goes forward be kind of like a pitcher throwing a baseball. Next your retrieve: keep your rod tip on the just over the water . I watched you miss a lot of fish. As soon as your line starts to behave abnormally from what you have been doing, just pull through the guides and bury the hook. This is the closest positive connection point between you and the fish. A high rod tip on retrieve just bends the rod tip and you have a hard time trying to pull a heavy line through water with a soft tipped rod to set the hook. With directly well buried hook you don't need a barb. Raise the rod and fight the fish . When the fish wants to run, palm the lower edge of the reel rim and let it run .Let your hand feel the fish as it runs .Feel it as gets tired . Keep taking in line as the fish tires and it should just come to you like a tired pup. If it wants to run, just let it run and keep the pressure up. Let that big shock absorber rod tire your fish and it should just come in tired and you should be able to just pull the hook out of a tired and submissive fish .Hold it by the tail and let it breathe and get it's strength back and if it isn't bleeding anywhere just let it swim off when it gets it's strength back . When fighting a good fish use your reel handle for retrieving line only .Keep your hand away from the reel handle if you like your knuckles .Your hand should be palming the reel and letting the fish run. Set your drag and let it work, but use your palm to apply pressure to the fish as needed . You can whip a really big fish with a fly rod and it's quite deceptive. There's a lot of power in such a delicate looking piece of equipment .I suggested a shooting line and head here because it's a lot easier for beginners . Lines which are typically 108 fee, create too much resistance and starve a rod sometimes for distance with novice casters, while a head will be so friction free to the point it can jerk against the reel when it runs out of spooled out line .I used to teach casting and I found it was easier to use heads at first then go to full lines .From there ,what ever you like most and become the most proficient with is what you should use .I have been fly fishing for about sixty years and I still use heads for versatility .It's all up to you . Watching your video, I wish I was on that beech . Personally I fish conventional or fly. I just love to fish .For me fly fishing is my favorite because it really lets you feel the fish on the end of your line .

Hi John Is your line a weight forward line if not that would help, I also false cast (not letting it hit the water)a few times to get the line longer before you shoot it out. And are you letting the line fully extend behind you before you start your forward motion, That will increase your line speed. I used to fish around Smithtown bay area in the old days.

You're picking it up pretty quickly, John. You could go with a shorter leader very easily.Manage your lined on the backcast with your left hand, if it gets slack you lose your casting energy. You'll get it. An excellent reason to get on the water, casting practice. And you might look into a casting basket to manage line and waves. By the way, I think you're Hooked on fly fishing.

Casting large flies on a fly rod is difficult even for an experienced fly fisherman, so considering that you are a beginner, you did well. The fact that you caught two big blues is proof you did well enough to fool the fish. You might want to attempt using the backcast method with the big flies... you may find it easier to get distance with your casts.

I've been carrying an 8wt with me in mid to late summer when the mahi push in. They are awesome on the fly. I miss bluefish so much. I'm down in AC and it's been 2 years since I hooked one. I don't really target them other then early spring till now but I used to be tortured by blues. I don't get them sharking anymore, I don't get them trolling for tuna anymore. It's discouraging. They do all this research on stripers and I catch more of them then I want 😂. Where are the bluefish? What happened to all night bluefish trips out of Barnegat Light? It u used to be mayhem. I worked both the Doris Mae and Miss Barnegat Light for years on this trips. Now most of those boats are gone. Just like the bluefish. Burlap bags full of blues 😂😆😂. Then one year they were gone. I know these fish move......allot. They are in every ocean. And every continent

  • @KarimElayoubyFishing
    @KarimElayoubyFishing Год назад +2

You are swinging the fly rod well past 11 and 2 o clock. This makes it so that the rod is really only bending or “loading” energy in the most distal tip of the rod.
Swing forward, stop abruptly at 11, false cast to 2 o clock, wait until you feel that energy load across the entire length of the rod. You will feel a mild bow across the length of the rod through your gripping hand. The fly has straightened out along with the line behind you, swing it forward to 11 o clock and if you feel you’ve built enough momentum, or have enough line swinging, let go of the line you’re hauling with the left hand and when you time this correctly with the “bow” in the rod you feel swinging forward at 11, the line shoots out and carries the remainder of stripped line straight forward.
The bow in the rod feeling is subtle. Practice 11 and 2 slowly to get a feel for what I am trying to describe. The more line you have swinging over your head during your false casts will make the feeling more pronounced, though you will have to be almost machine like in your 11 to 2 movement to maintain control of that greater length of line. Maintain a strong grip of the rod in your right hand so you feel the kinetics and control the rod/line. Also practice with a light fly tied on first as it’s easier to feel the weight of the fly line.
You can use the water load method to begin your false cast and to get your line and fly overhead swinging in the air.
I’m no experienced fly fisherman. But I’ve been fishing with my 9 WT fly rod all year and the more time you spend with it, you will intuitively figure it out through trial and error.
I’d love to see you catch snook and tarpon on the fly John. I know you can do it.

I don't want to sound critical at all, but 2 things will improve your fly fishing instantly. 1) Keep false casting back and forth off the water until you hit your desired distance, then lay the line out on the water. 2) while stripping in the line, keep line loosely under your right index finger, stripping with left hand behind right hand, pulling line through right clenched palm. Also keep rod tip down almost touching the water, this will allow for less slack and better hook sets. You are doing pretty good for only having several minutes of instruction though lol. I actually prefer fly fishing, but have learned a ton about spin fishing from watching your videos. Thanks John!

Hold the line closer to reel. You aren’t generating any line speed with left hand. Just pull down a little when taking rod back… a modified double haul.. Key is taking rod back with quick stop.. that loads the rod. When line unfurls behind you push rod forward again with quick stop.. like a whip. It’s just physics and practice. Nice fish!

Too steep of a learning curve for my patience, and I no longer go river fishing - it's expensive, needs a license with very strict rules and, at the slightest mistake, you may have your equipment (including your car) seized.

Not sponsored in anyway, just stoked on product I’ve used for a few season. Ahrex Flexistripper, most unobtrusive stripping basket and super easy to work with!

Wow. What a bizarre looking thing. I thought it was a visor at first.

Side pressure on the fly rod John. Strength is in the butt section. Loop knot on the fly for max movement. Palm the reel, not with your knuckles. Stripping basket a must. Cheap guy like you can make your own. Take a video of your casting stroke, which you did not have at all John. Learn to make loops in the yard. Then you can go fishing. Very painful watching this. Not easy to learn but it is mind blowing how fun it is. Hardly want to use spinning gear any more. Keep it up and watch some fly casting videos. Then watch what you’re doing wrong before you pick up the dreaded bad habits and poor form. Sorry to be so tough on you but this doesn’t come easy.
