I am sweating just looking at him giving his all breath to sing that harmonica. Breathtaking also for the listener.

I still have the 78rpm record of this which someone gave me when I was a little kid. Couldn't get enough of it. It turned me on to Balkan dance music as well as classical, strongly influencing the direction of my life. Amazing to actually see him perform this complex work, and so close to his passing.

I only just found this video. Truly, it is a wonderful musical piece for harmonica, and I wept to watch it. Clearly, the harmonica he's playing has the stainless steel body that my partner, Douglas Tate, created especially for him. Doug also played this number flawlessly in a recording, and I heard it many times since, even in our home basement as he practiced. To find this video is priceless! Many thanks for the upload!

Thank you for posting this memorable video on Larry Adler's performance with the symphony in Tokyo in 1997. I am amazed that he, at the age of 83, two years before his death, still could perform this difficult piece so wonderfully. Every harmonica players should view this and add it to your favorite list.

Thank you for your comment. Larry Adler was an outstanding soloist and your friend Douglas Tate was also a magnificent soloist and a brilliant engineer. I had the pleasure of knowing him personally, and have been talking and playing with him a little, in a world championship. Reminds me very well, having had my hands on his harmonica silver, which had the precious curiosity of having a large ruby embedded on the button. May rest in peace.

Stop all harp shows, everywhere - this is insane - I have reserved space at the top for Adler, based on live show c. 1976, and that Audio Fidelity album. Glad I did - because no one comes close to this technique and passion - Larry was an intellectual and it shows

It is said, that Hohner made the harmonicas for Larry Adler, following the precise instructions of what he intended (thicker and longer reed, for him to "pull through".) True? False ? Only by having access to one of the harmonicas played by him, or getting information from those who prepared and tuned them in. Any information more?

I disagree: The Lord didn't create only one LA; only one, very talented LA took the time and effort to teach himself how to play like that. There are lots of very musical people in the world -- most of them just never do what it takes to become great musicians like Adler or other greats. It's really that simple, in my opinion. God is great, but the human spirit is supreme!
