Sorry for the late reply. The water is clear in the main part of the tank. The substrate I used was an aquatic soil so it was meant to be submerged in water. The area under the tree is blocked off from the rest of the tank. it slowly gets water build up in it and that water is dirty. I have to suction it out about once a year.
Excellent work, I really like it. I've been thinking of making a newt paludarium, because I don't want frogs or toads. But I don't know anything about newts. I'd like some that are primarily aquatic, but do need to be on land at times. And I'd like them to be brightly colored.
I didn't have one written down so here what I remember light diffuser panel, zip ties, GE silicon one, screen widow mesh, foam core board, a submersible water pump, tubing, PVC connectors, lava rocks, Great Stuff Pond & Stone expanding foam, Krylon fusion spray paint, frosted window tent, eco complete substrate, aquarium sand. The rest are the plants and animals listed in the video. The Great Stuff Pond & Stone expanding foam, Krylon fusion spray paint, and GE silicon one are all aquarium safe.
Thanks! All filtration is done with with the lava rocks and plants. I do a 50% water change every 2-3 months. The window screen I put on there acts as a physical filter before water gets to the pump.
I have to ask, why just 2? I've been told this species is fairly communal as long as they have space and multiple hiding spots. that tank could easily house 5 or 6.
A few fish have gone missing and suspect they were eaten but I've never seen it. I got white cloud mountain minnows because they are barbless so if they get eaten they won't hurt the fish and they like cold water like the newts.
the roots of the terrestrial plants touch the water so i don't need to water them. They just take what the need. Every once in a while I like to cover the top and let the tank gather condensation. This helps the aerial roots grow on the tree.
Amazing tank! I have been looking for Danube crested newts for quite some time and even tough these newts are native to Austria (where I live), I have not managed to find anyone who breeds or sells them (or any other native amphibian for that matter).
I'm sorry you can't find them. I had to do a lot of searching here in the USA. I eventually found a breeder on caudata.org. They have a section for the EU on there, you might as well look there too.
Most countries require extensive permits to breed and keep endemic wildlife as pets, because there's always a risk the pet population gets introduced into the ecosystem, where it can throw things off-balance or bring unwanted genetics or diseases into the wild (like from accidental inbreeding, or keeping species not found in the wild together). Contact your local herpetological society for more info about how you could keep them legally.
@@Velcraft the legal aspects would be no problem. It would just require a document by the breeder to prove that they are not wild caught, but my problem is that I can’t find any breeders. I already have contacted my local herpetological society, multiple groups of local hobbyists, a few wholesalers and I have regularly searched through just about every site where people sell the animals they breed in my country and in neighbouring countries. There is just absolutely nothing to be found
Light diffuser sheet. I got mine at home depot but most hardware stores should have them. I know now they sell them in black too which I would have got so I didn't have to paint them
Awesome build dude was looking for some insperation for a new build im about to start with quite a large waterfall and drip wall I love the idea of having almost wetland pools on the way down how many gph is you pump?
I honestly can't remember how much it was, but it was one of the lowest amounts I could find. The news don't like water movement and typically live in slow flow water areas so I tried to get a really small one.
They're so precious. I love newts because they look so happy swimming about
They are fun little creatures, so dumb and happy
One of the best newts videos I’ve seen yet
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
Lovely setup. Well done!
Thank you very much
Awesome job. One question. With your land island does the water going through the substrate tan or dirty your water? Thanks for the great video.

If you're looking to learn more about newts then you should visit caudata.org. that's where I researched everything before hand.
@@fosterspetsanddiy8369 Great; Thank you for that source.
Bravo!! Fantástico Acuaterrario!El detalle del Bonsai es precioso y original
Gracias. Me alegro que lo aprecies.
This looks fantastic! Do you have a supply list that you could share? What types of glue/foam/and paint are safe for the aquatic life?

Thank you! 😊
Sweet build
Thank you!
Turned out Amazing!! Great video 👍🏼
Thanks so much!
Great build! I look forward to seeing any new builds you may create!
Thanks, the tank is a year now and Ill post an update on what it looks like now.
@@fosterspetsanddiy8369 awesome!
Absolutely love it! I think I like your design more than most I've seen! Are you using any extra filtration?

a log scape os some sort would look great in there
Looks absolutely stunning! Wonderful job!
Thank you very much.

nice setup, also you take the time to film enough footage after the build is done and let us enjoy watching the newts.
Thanks, I watched a lot of tutorials to learn how to do this so I felt I should also provide for the community
So nice!!!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
cool build... noting today i'm your 183rd subscriber. will look back in a month when you hit 20k... then a year when you hit 100k.
Have many fish been eaten? I am considering housing Endlers with fire belly newts.

beautiful! it came out amazing! do you watch serpadesign? this reminds me of something he would make lol
Oh yeah, I used techniques that he used to help me design and build this tank. I really enjoy his channel and I wanted show my process too.
Hi nice tank ! How do you maintain the terrestrial plants ?
the roots of the terrestrial plants touch the water so i don't need to water them. They just take what the need. Every once in a while I like to cover the top and let the tank gather condensation. This helps the aerial roots grow on the tree.
Have the newts eaten any fish?
Beautifull Paladarium. What song is playing from 15:38 ?

I'm surprised there isn't anyone from the Facebook groups trying to ban you for having fish lol great video

Just bought a 75 gallon. Wanting to something like this for my banded water snake
That's awesome. Hopefully my video will help you build it.
What's the plant/tree on the right there in the dry portion? My apologies if you said it during the video.
I see now it says bonsai, but what species?
Ficus benghalensis
Ficus Benghalensis
love it!!! i have 2 newts also! 2 pleurodeles waltl. do you fertilize? how do you keep the plants so beautiful?
The plants use the waste from the newts and fish as fertilizer. This also helps keep the water clean.
What size tank? Dimensions?
It's a 65 gallons tank but probably only has 20 gallons in it. The dimensions are 18" X 20" X 48".
What brand of lights are you using?
I am using a fluval aquasky light. I love it since its programable and has a moonlight mode.
This is beautiful are you based in UK?
I'm not, sorry
Please make more videos
Cool vid man! Did you not like the look of the expanding foam stuff, is that why you took it out?
The expanding foam was meant secure the rocks together, I didn't like the look of it sticking out the rocks.
How did you get the Danube crested newts? I've been trying to get some for over a year.
I found a guy who breeds them here in the US. It was a lucky find but I was going to conventions and asking around.
@@fosterspetsanddiy8369 I guess I’ll have to do the same. Thanks.
@@fosterspetsanddiy8369 Excited to see more!
Where do you get the plastic mesh? I'm in canada and amazon only seems to have a very small amount for ~$30 CND
A hardware store would be a good place to look. Ask for window/door screen. You should be able to get a good amount for cheap.
What's the white plastic with white squares called?
