- Hey everyone, I'm finally back with another video! I've been working on a new enclosure for my Eastern newts and wanted to share this setup with everyone. After a little over a month of work, I'm quite happy with how it turned out and I'm sure the Eastern newts are just as happy! Check out the list below for some details on what I used for this setup:
-55 Gallon Aquarium
-Fluval LED plant light
Substrate:
-CaribSea Eco-Planted Aquarium substrate
-Fluval Stratum aquatic soil
Hardscape:
-Spiderwood
Aquatic plants:
-Lobelia cardinalis
-Ludwigia arcuata
-Frogbit
-American Pondweed
-Java moss
-Taiwanese moss

The moss on top looks awesome! I would love to see a full on paladarium setup where the newts could do their full life cycle from larvae to Eft to Adult all in one setup.
Very cool!! I am working on a eastern newt set up I learned a lot thank you!
It's Soooo satisfying to see the newts glide through the water as they swish their tails.
When my daughter was around 5 we used to fish wild trout ponds in northern Ontario Canada and she would play with the wild newts all around the edges of the pond 😎
Thank you for this tutorial 😎, I have trouble building mostly aquatic vivariums.
Love the channel!
You my friend are an awesome inspiration. I used to keep Paddletail Newts and they were my pride and joy. I gave them a planted tank as well but without ferns and only one plant that carpeted the vivarium. to about six inches. I am trying to breed the Taricha granulosa (rough skin newt) as a conservation project because of what happened in the Pacific Northwest with all the Wildfires recently. Your videos are hypnotic, I really hope to see more. I live in South Jersey, well within the range of a few newt and salamander species but are very hard to find, because of pollution I'm assuming. However Eastern Newts have always interested me, and maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough to be able to breed these guys in the type of vivarium that you set up in this video. Thanks for your content, my dude. Have a great 2023.
Hey, could I ask which state you live in? I'd just love to know if I could go over to a local clean stream, turn over some rocks and find some newts or salamanders. I live in S. Jersey by the way. So I know I definitely live within the range of some at least. just don't know how many...
I'm very experienced with different aquatic animals. I had 100 gallon marine aquarium completely live a coral reef as well as many other fish and starfish and other types of species. I used to play with salamander when I was a little girl in the wild. I just bought my first newt. A gorgeous marbled newt. Thank you so much for your video because I really want to set heard terrestrial and aquatic new home well!
This is so COOL
I really like the above water stuff and how you did that, I’ve been using some slate with dirt on top held up with wood to plant above water plants. Your videos have helped me a lot 2 eastern newts going strong for 5 months
Awesome. Thanks for the tutorial
I love eastern newts, I use to catch and release them all the time as a kid, they love the little ponds that form from little ground springs, it's cool and clean water and absolutely packed full of Eastern newts, I noticed the little ground spring ponds had some tannins from leaves, it didn't seem to hurt them but I was wondering if I could do that for my tank?
Hello,
I am looking for a few Eastern Newts.
Please let me know if you can ship a few for me to Northern California.
Thank you.
So cool, I know what my next project is going to be! The way they swim they look like little scaleless crocodiles
Loved the video man. I did something similar recently in a 6x2x2❤
Dude this channel is great!
Now after morel hunting and hiking for 10 hours I just lay down in the grass and watch the sunset and stargaze for a bit then grab my light and get right back in the woods.
What a cool video and such a beautiful tank. How funny... free newt!
Where did you get these? Been looking for a breeder for a while. Thanks, awesome video!
I’ve got a pair of efts! Thank you for the inspiration
Do you have any more cold tolerant plant recommendations?
Hi! Glad you enjoyed the tank build! Not sure if you know already, but this setup is meant for the aquatic adults only. The efts will drown in a setup like this since they are completely terrestrial until adulthood. On the subject of plants, Java moss and crystalwort are very hardy and easy plants.
@@TheSalamanderWilds I’ve got them in a bioactive viv at the moment and they’re doing great! They’ve been efts for over a year at least and I got them as efts aswell so I’m just starting to get design ideas for an adult enclosure, couldn’t have popped up on my feed at a better time!
Already got Java moss on hand lol but looking into getting some crystalwort now too thanks!
Thank you for this ❤
Nice set up.
Thanks for the video.
How fo you clean the water? I assume you never have a filter in with them? Even a small one.
How often do you clean it?
Thanks from 🇬🇧
Hey there! I don't have this setup anymore unfortunately -- my newts are in something much more modest at the moment. When I had this enclosure, I only did minimal water changes at the start, and never used any sort of filter. Just natural water evaporation and plant filtration - that was pretty much it. I would add water as needed.
What a gorgeous setup!! I'm curious though, whatever happened to that larval newt?? Also, just out of curiosity, what would be some of your recommendations for a first time newt and or salamander species?
Thank you! The larvae is still in the enclosure with the adults. It's feeding on tiny organisms present within the setup. For a first time newt/salamander owner, I'd go with a Spanish ribbed newt or axolotl. They're both very popular, hardy animals and are relatively easy to keep.
So cool! What is this little fern on the branch?
I could be wrong, but i believe it is Ebony Spleenwort.
Hey, love the vid.. i caught a wild marbled salamander nymph, and have been raising it since. Its now a terrestrial salamander.. can you make a video on how i should make a setup for it and tag me in it?
Hey there! It's going to be a bit tough to do a video on one of these at the moment, but I can provide an article to the proper set up. Marbled salamanders are an Ambystoma salamander, and they can have mostly similar enclosures to one another. Here's an article to a tiger salamander care guide, you can use a similar enclosure. www.caudata.org/cc/species/Ambystoma/A_tigrinum.shtml
@@TheSalamanderWilds Thank you!! New sub for sure here
Awesome build
He'll yeah
I have a small setup for two fire belly newts but I'm considering a bigger setup. How do you deal with the mess they leave behind while eating? All this time I've been cleaning it manually and using a filter from tome to tome but I'm a total noob to this. They are healthy and doing well so I don't want to mess it up for them.
Hi! I usually have snails and shrimp to help clean up the left over uneaten food. But if there's still anything left over afterwards, manual cleaning is still necessary.
Nice, are you using a cooler to keep the water colder? I typically have just ambient room temperatures range from season to season. Nice natural set up!
Nope, no cooler. I have the tank in the basement so the room temperature is naturally colder from the rest of the house.
Are you thinking maybe about a tank tour for all tanks. It would be so cool 😎! Maybe I'd you have time you can make a quick 4-6 min?
Also I remember I made a comment and you said at the end that you no longer own you spanish ribbed newts and about food. But what happend to them?
It's something I'd like to do in the future, but there's a lot going on at the moment. I had to downsize partly because I've been too busy unfortunately.
@@TheSalamanderWilds Also what happend to the Spaniah ribbed newts you had
@@zaac2999 Unfortunately I had to down size. I'd like to get back into them in the future if the opportunity comes up.
Amazing Build! A little off topic but is there a way to tell if a red eft is reaching its final adult stage?
Assuming the eft is 2+ years old, I would keep watch for any coloration changed, from red/orange to the aquatic adult coloration. I think that would usually be a good indicator.
When is breeding season for Spanish ribbed newts?
Hi! I think this video will answer that question: ruclips.net/video/WKXp9YWQH5k/видео.html
Hey man, i am just curious, what do you use to filter the tank?
Hey, I actually don't use a filter. I just have an all natural setup with a heavily planted tank.
@@TheSalamanderWilds how often do you water change?
@@samjordan1724I've read once a week changing about 30% of the water, but don't quote me on it.
@@mrsdragonite oh I know that for a more conventional tank. I was moreso wonder for one without a filter in it. I have yet to do a no filter tank.
Hey! I got a tank from someone because I wanted to upgrade my guppy tank. When I filled up the water, I discovered that there is a living newt in its aquatic stage still in it!! I doubt it, but is there any way to Cohab them with fish? I don’t wanna evict the poor guy, plus I don’t think any fish stores near me sell them so I’m not sure what to do
Hi! Unfortunately, fish would not be a good mix for aquatic newts and salamanders for a variety of reasons. There are certain fish that are considered peaceful, but not many. I made a whole video on this topic, I recommend watching through the whole thing: ruclips.net/video/fapFDGmwBxU/видео.html
@@TheSalamanderWilds dang!! I figured 😭 just thought I’d ask anyways - thank you so much for the link :)
@@M_Mcg No problem, always happy to help!
@@TheSalamanderWilds I think I’m going to just keep him, he’s very malnourished since he hadn’t been fed for a super long time so I don’t wanna risk taking him to a store or something because finding individualized care for him there may be difficult. The person I got him from thought they died like a month+ ago, so I’m amazed he lived this long without food. Should I be feeding him on an every other day schedule like other places recommend, or should I feed him more often since he is so skinny?
@@M_Mcg I think every 2
days should be fine, just be careful not to overfeed. Frozen Blood worms and especially live earth worms should be good starters.
Are those substrates and plants available at local pet stores or do they need to be purchased from a specific retailer? Your tank turned out beautiful by the way :)
Yup, these are available from most local pet shops!
Do u treat the water when u add it or use distilled water or…?
Hey there! I actually don't do either. I know my tap water is safe, so the most I do is let the tank cycle.
Can someone let me know where I can find these newts or fire bellied newts I’ve been looking forever
Did you remove the larva?
Nope, the larvae is still in the enclosure. Noticed today it has its back legs already, so once it morphs it'll come onto the surface of the spider wood.
@@TheSalamanderWilds wow- it is amazing the adults haven't eaten it! Very cool!
Can all these plants can be kept with spanish ribbed newt's?
Yeah I think they'd work simply due to the same temp requirements as the eastern newts.
Whats your budget
Do you own any salamandra?
Nope, I don't unfortunately. Would love to own some one day though.
@@TheSalamanderWilds would be cool to see a care video on them. I occasionally have some available as well. I really love your channel and I think we know some of the same people in the hobby!
Fluval stratum just makes ph so insanely acidic which is not something you should do for most if not all newts.
Hi! While the pH concern is true, I have been using aquatic soil - ADA Amazonia and Fluval brands for a little over 6 years with these individuals while maintaining good water quality.
@@TheSalamanderWilds thanks for the quickly reply. I'll have to give it a shot then. Perhaps it's just an old wives tale from people who didn't want to pay for good substrate lol.
Why did mine never become red efts?????
It's hard to say, maybe they were neotenic for a time?
@@TheSalamanderWilds lol I'd be lying if I said I understand, also mine only ever stay in the water
@@TheSalamanderWilds they’ve bred and everything but never came on land
@@allyoucansee590 If I'm understanding correctly- if the adults bred, the adults won't come onto land as efts. The larvae (babies) would eventually transform and come onto land as efts.
@@TheSalamanderWilds no the larvae stayed under water the entire time
Please clean the glass
I thought this might come up 😅 this is such an old tank, over 10 years of use. It's as clean as its going to get unfortunately.
