- We travel to Poland in our 1988 Volvo 244 and by doing so, cause some strange noises on it, other than the violent piston slap.

For anyone wondering, she managed around 30 US MPG (35 UK) or 8L/100km!
That's insane, my 244 with 2.0 never manages better than 10L!
I've never managed any better than 10L in a redblock before either!
She'll do about 10 aswell during mixed driving but seems happy on the autobahn, 110/120 kmph around 2600 - 2900 rpm ish (the tachometer is quite small and hard to read)
That's really efficient! My newer 1991 Volvo 960 needs 12-13l/100Km and on the Highway I can move it with 10,5-11l/100Km.
Your mileage sounds about right. I've been driving 240 and 740 models since '93 - both with the AW70 automatic - and receive between 31-34 miles to the Imperial gallon at 100kmh. The 31mpg was with my '86 240 without the lock-up torque converter. The 34mpg is with my '90 740 with the lock-up torque converter, which lowers the highway RPM's by about 10 percent - 2400 RPM @100kmh. Your 240 with the overdrive manual should receive a little better mileage than my automatic 740.
@@bobjohnson1587 very nice, yeah that sounds right actually! I'm keen to see what the 940 does on the highway with its AW71L. The 740 has the ZF22, didn't return very good figures at all but it did have a break bind for a good part of the way..
"I can't afford a crack habit with 3 Volvos"
ACCURATE.
Hey sledge, thanks for taking us on a trip to Poland with Lili and the misses! Great content bro!
Thanks buddy, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm imagining you getting an unexplainable chill every time a sticker is applied to the window of an old volvo. I'll take pleasure in sticker bombing mine 😏
Haha no I really encourage everyone to have their car their way, nothing against people slamming their Volvo and pimping it up, even though I keep mine painfully stock 🤣
I think your problem will solve itself when you change engine mounts. As a side note. I purchased a 1990 ,940 a few months ago for $1200 AU. . Old gentleman couldn’t drive anymore. Car had always been serviced. 300,000 Klm. No Rust, paint good, had only ever been washed , never polished. Came up a treat. Had troubles with fuel delivery . Replaced fuel pump, and all associated relays.
Took it for a 300klm trip a couple days ago.
I sat back enjoying the trip and thought to myself , if someone who knew nothing about cars, was put in the drivers seat with eyes closed. Then told to take it for a drive, they would think that they where driving a modern car, a bit more attuned to the road. Of course needed to get up to 100 kph plus, before it came into its own.
Nothing much happens between 80 and 100 then it takes off. To late then as breaking the speed limit here.lol.
Oh nice! They are a total joy to drive aren't they. I really enjoyed driving in AU and that was in a Hyundai i10 or 20, I don't know, one of those bean tin cars. Can't imagine how nice it would be in a cruiser like the 940!
Hmm it almost sounds like a bearing, failing front bearing would only make noise when the car is on it's wheels, and only when it feels like it... Bearings have a mind of their own, I was thinking it couldn't be driveline related if it happens while coasting
Anyways, great video as always, happy Birthday Mrs Involvo'd!
Thanks, I had a look at the front bearings, they had very slight play in them that I was aware of, nipped them up and problem solved!
@@Involvod ooh great to hear! 👌
The navy blue paint on Lili and the alloy wheels are an elegant combination, she looks great.
Re the noise in the Lili. Nah, I have no clue. Sorry. Perhaps it will get louder or stop the car moving, then it will be easy to diagnose. Personal comment warning. I like Mrs. Involv'd voice. It is a charming combination of German with an English accent overlay. Very sweet.
Keep rolling.
I thought that, if it's a problem it'll get louder and louder and then I'll be able to find it 😄 Haha thanks I'll let her know
Oh that sound of a red block and clunk of the reverse lift when you go back into 1st is forever installed in my heart. Happy belated birthday to Mrs Involved!
The familiar CLACK, it's great isn't it 🤗 Thanks buddy
We are literally about to drive 4 hours away for my lady's birthday today. Maybe we should rock out in the 245.
With fuel prices as they are the 50mpg German smoker might be a better idea 😃 Safe travels!
@@Involvod its just less fun :(
@1:28 Eastern Bulgaria, approx. 1000 km south-east from Poland.
What a great chilled out episode! Nice to see you traveling in Lily! You Guys are fun! You need to visit Gdańsk at some point so we could hang out 😀.
I'm also trying to locate all the noises in my car😂. I was thinking of placing a piezo pickup with magnet on various parts and record it on audio software while driving😃.
Oh I didn't know you are in Gdansk! I went there a couple of years ago, had a lot of fun. That's a good idea, I think it's partly an 'old 240 thing' too, always random noises 😄
Wonderful vid again, was LMAO no less than three times; your foil wrapping in sight story, sticker-saga "no we don't like stickers - I'm going to launch Involvo'd stickers" and (low quality beach footage - high quality Volvo footage). Thanks guys, needed that after a stressful week
Glad you enjoyed it! 😉
I think you will have a blast at a show and I bet your becoming quite famous in the Volvo owners club circles
Haha not that I know of mate 😄
gotta love the intro with the reving. I do think that even though you work on redblocks, adding a 5cil reving would be a nice fit. can't do wrong with a 5cil sound. also the outro looking good. but I kinda miss the old music. maybe just silly me being nostaling. regardles of that, you can tell the improvement from vid to vid, it pays off and looks beautiful ❤
Thanks I appreciate the feedback! Might be on to a 5 cylinder soon with the price of Redblocks 😃
@@Involvod I could help you out there if need be...
@@sebastianbrrrr7372 thanks man, I will let you know but I'm trying to hold out for as long as possible 😃
(even though I do really like the 850)
@@Involvod I love driving them, and as I said, less rust but more issues everywhere else. But they're all old and there will always be a to do list.
Hope you are able to nail down the source of the noise. Check your transmission mount condition and while you are under there you may check to see if your u-joints have grease fittings (most do) as you may want to inject some new grease. Looking forward to more.
Thanks, they do have the grease fittings so I definitely need to get on a do that too, thanks for reminding me 😄
Is it a rotating sound that changes with the speed of the car? My hearing isn't what it used to be so i can't really tell.
Have you disassembled the drive shaft and inspected the bearing between the shafts and the rubber grommet that the bearing sits in? If not I think you should have a look at it. Oh and by the way I find your channel interesting and very honest so I decided to subscribe.
Yes exactly that, it goes faster but not louder, as soon I pick up speed the road noise drowns it out. I'll take a look at that bearing next and see if it's rough, seems like a likely culprit! Thanks for the sub I appreciate it!
i'd say i'm 50/50 on car stickers. The right stickers on the right car can definitely work, I think 'sticker bombs' on old VW vans and stuff can look awesome. When I get my volvo, i'll have a few but keep them minimal. Never the less, I would more than happily love to buy an Involvo'd sticker!
Yeah I agree, if it's tastefully done! That's great to know, can't wait to get them rolling!
I needed a road trip 😅
I like Volvo sticker Idea. Just not on my car.
My rear diff seal is needing replacement doesn't look happy. *Maybe something to consider.
Mathews Volvo forums is pretty good
& redblock society
Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Nice video, today I was lucky, I had 2 Involvo’d videos and a fresh MOT on the Škoda 🎉
Thanks and congrats on the pass ticket!
I replaced every suspension part on my 240 and it still makes noises. I think it's just typical old car stuff.
Especially 240, crude noisy old things aren't they 🤣
Great vid. Hope Miss Involvo'd enjoyed the Birthday trip ☺️ xx
Thanks 🙂
Are you coming to Aqua Best september 22th?😁
Is that the Volvo Drive treffen? I have a different date for that? There's so much on its confusing 😃
@@Involvod yes it is 😁. That's a pitty because i believe it's one of the biggest one😊. Thanks for texting back. Greats from an other rebblock owner. Love you channel and the things you do
Have a look at the prop shafts universal joint to see if theirs any ovality ware in it
Thanks! I had a look and checked if there was play but they seem good 🤔
I hate stickers on my car but I do stick them on my toolbox
Me too!
Are you going to let us know which volvo events you are going to go to?
Definitely! As soon as I know 🙂
I'm an Alfa male. That said, I really enjoy your channel. For those oddball noises, turn the radio up or open the windows. It helps with ours. No stickers thanx!
Could be Blacker! Awesome - shout out to Spinal Tap!
Haha 😄
Nice to see Lili out on the road. Looking forward to seeing the trips to the shows.
Thanks Ched!
Keep on truckin' Lili! Thanks for taking me on your trip Sledge.
Anytime 😃
It sounds like there's play in the differential gears, but it's not coming from the rear, right? Did you press the clutch, when it occured?
I tried both and it was the same, at first I thought it was from the very front, but now I think it's more central..
@@Involvod So gearbox or one of the bearings probably. I once diagnosed one on a friend's Mercedes with a cheap microphone with a pre-amp and a CD player with a pre-amp input. Stuck it to the bearings and found the one that was wrong. Didn't replace it though, still works almost 50000 kms later.
@@sebastianbrrrr7372 haha nice! I do hope it's on the driveshaft and not the gearbox! I'll start removing things and see what happens
It's not a proper redblock without violent piston slap. Is there any rotational noise in the front wheels when you get them off the ground and turn them by hand?
Haha very true! I tried that and they were both quiet 🤔
Sensacional 👏👏👏👏 parabéns pela máquina 👏👏 abraços do Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thanks man!
Yay! to stickers, mugs would be cool too.
I thought about mugs but the postage and customs is so much! 🥴
Nice one.
Did you inspect the condition of the Guibo? (rubber coupling between Gbox tailshaft and driveshaft)
Those bolts need to be torqued TIGHT.
Thanks yeah I had a good look at it and it's in really great condition
I had one that did 13 km per liter
🤣🤣🤣
They let the Brit expat into Poland?????
Must’ve been Miss Involvo’d who got you in 😉😂
Look forward to finding out what the bloody noise is. I know it’s gonna drive you nuts until you fix it! They didn’t put airbags and air conditioning in those European 240’s did they?
😄 It's always so surprisingly easy to cross borders in EU I'll never get used to it.
I don't recall ever seeing either of those in a 240 here, but it's food for thought I'll definitely be on the lookout now! My 740 of the same age has air con, but I've only seen airbags in the early to mid 90's 940s
@@Involvod I also noticed the prevalence of the headrest pads on the European 240’s versus the American ones. You don’t see as many here. You have to look far and wide to find a 240 on this side of the pond with them. Same goes for power windows on 240’s on that side of the pond.
@@Involvod Come to think of it have you seen cruise control on many European 240’s?
@@honestaquarian I've never seen it! 🤔
@@Involvod ruclips.net/video/7T6rozkXTQI/видео.html
It’s Russian so I can’t understand a word they’re saying. However if you pay close attention you will see some things that you see on the European 240’s as well as some things that you see on American 240’s. I’m wondering if he had this car brought over from the US, because it has a high mount stop lamp (the third brake light in the back window) and instead of the side mounted turn signal bulb on the front fender. There is a Volvo badge. Maybe if I could find a way to get what they’re saying translated then I could see if they talk about any of that.
Regarding the driveshaft carrier bearing, I have heard that a 700 series unit can be fitted to the 240 and has stronger rubber and lasts much longer. Worth some research for your upgrade?
Thanks! Definitely worth looking into, as you probably know these things eat through carrier bushes 😵
It wasn't clear how fast you were going when it made the noise, so I was going to suggest a front wheel bearing. I don't take my 240 on long drives anymore, so it is cool to see one out on a road trip.
Thanks! I did give them a good spin and they sounded ok. Also, I don't blame you, it's nice but stressful 😅
Front U joint?
It seemed okay, but I'll re grease them and take a better look. Thanks!
Nice trip. Hockey puck time!
Sorry mate I don't get it? 🥴
@@Involvod Ah hehe i thought you meant the 'ol swedish trick, using hockey pucks as engine mounts! :)
@@Buffalobulltofta oh haha I've never heard of that but I'm also not surprised 😄
@@Involvod Haha yeah it's a classic, durable but stiff and transfers a lot of vibration.
