I really appreciate these detailed and slower paced guides; they are fantastic as learning tools. Often I find 'how to paint' videos go too fast, or they apply a few brush strokes and then immediately skip ahead to a finished step.

I feel like i've learned so much by just watching how you move the paint, and you explained very well pointing it out the different techniques! Thank you!
Welcome back Mr K. Great work. A fantastic tip too, you mentioned, Brush movement. Usually & often overlooked in painting but it is, one of the core ingredients of ...........the Art & the ‘look’ of a painting, as a whole etc. Have a good weekend. Hugh.
What a pleasure to see one of you videos in my feed. I can’t decide if how easy you make it look is inspiring or infuriating. This is an excellent video and brilliant paining thank you for sharing.
Heya bid, just want to say your videos are amazing and tour talent with a brush and ability to translate your actions into something I can understand, thankyou. Operation wet pallet is in effect. And I shall be religiously using your videos to improve my painting. Thank you for using your time to make these videos
Thanks, you're welcome. Best of luck with the wet palette, I remember switching to the wet palette, I got an instant level up in my painting. Hope you have a similar experience with it. Let me know how you get on with it. :)
Welcome back, thanks for the video. You are absolutely my favorite painter on youtube. I would consider your videos to be "Masterclass" level. Can you maybe do some intermediate level painting tutorials? I'm not looking to win competitions, I'm just looking improve my models or even just to paint faster.
Thanks. I don't usually paint with the goal of making a tutorial, I tend to just record what I'm painting and then make that into a tutorial. So it's difficult to tailor them to a specific level, if that makes sense. The one's I did on the harlequins were to more of a high tabletop standard. But never say never, we'll see!
Dude! You did it again, I just received today, the Paolo Parente set box from zombicide black plague, and it's all about bare skin! I'll definitely check for hidden cameras in my house 🤣
Thank you so much for this. Can I just clarify, are you assuming the light source is directly from the front and back? hence why you lead the highlights to the centre of the leg?
thanks for sharing these hawt techniques. using dots to form the outer layers of the skin is a revelation. I think I must be improving thanks to your help and this community. as always, please keep up the excellent figure painting and vids.
Hi Dave, thanks! Yeah, I made a full tutorial of this model, showing how I painted each element. It's about 2 and a half hours long, currently available via my patreon feed.
Really good tutorial, i would love to have the same kind of content for the blue leather. I also would like to know how you decide what color to use to make the gloves, the jean and leather in the same hue but with still distinct.
Yeah, something like Cadian Flesh tone and Kislev Flesh. Most basic flesh tone paints will be fine. Plus you can always mix your own. I have a video on that if you're interested in trying it ruclips.net/video/NhP-reEFXe8/видео.html
Any advice on thinning paint? I’ve never really felt like I’ve gotten complete control over my ratio. Yours always seems to be at that sweet spot of thin but smooth
Ignore any advice trying to offer ratios, all paints are different so the amount of water you'll need will vary. Just go by how the paint feels on the palette. Test it on your thumb nail. What you want is for the paint to be semi transparent but under your control. If it sloshes about all over the place when you test in on your thumbnail, it's too thin, add some paint. If it's not transparent, it's too thick, add some water.
Hi KujoReally love your work. You make it look so easy so am giving it a go. My main barrier to getting better seems to be decent paint brushes at an affordable price. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks againJohn
Best of luck! These are my favourite right now. => elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/brushes/element-masterclass-brushes/element-games-kolinsky-regiment-brush?d=10190 £7 is pretty reasonable for the quality.
I always like to see different approaches. Each time I learn something new. To move the paint as less as possible I will focus on in the future. This wasn't new but always good to hear and bring it back to my attention. Glad you're back! On the last step, why did you use the ink instead of a 'normal' red?
I use the ink because it's more intense than normal paint, but also because it's more transparent and lets you alter the colour without covering up the details below it. Ink has a little shine to it when it finishes as well which is pretty cool.
I think I watch this video more than any other. I'm determined to paint skin this well. Well, near enough will do. Thanks for all your content. I've learnt so much from it all. I wish you (and youtube) were round twenty odd years ago when I started. And then I wish I hadn't stopped painting for twenty years. Anyways, is the choice of grey important in the initial basecoat?
Thanks! I also wish I hadn't stopped painting for about the same amount of time. Ah well, we're painting again now, that's what counts! The choice of grey is not so important no, but you should experiment with different greys to see how it changes the look.
No, never. I have a stripped down painting philosophy. Painting is complicated enough without throwing in a load of special potions on top, so I prefer to keep it as simple as I can and just use paint, water and a brush.
Your local artist supply store should have some larger size wet palettes. Pro-tip: the ones there often use a different paper than the parchment you're probably used to since it's designed for a different consistency of paints. Just ignore it if you don't like it and use parchment instead. Just don't buy and extra wad of paper unless you're sure that's what you want.
Other than the colour, they all have different properties, how they handle, the way they glaze, the way they look when they dry, etc. GW and F&G have a nice satin finish, but F&G has more transparency, so it's easier to do subtle blends. Scale color also has high transparency but they dry super matt so they're useful if you want to force a highlight without having extra highlights cast from the room lights. They're also better for glazing with as they don't react badly to being overly thinned with water.
