  • As a compliment to my rigid weights, I made a set of flexible leather weights as well. These are especially useful for gluing up curved parts that are difficult to clamp or delicate surfaces that would be easily marked by a rigid weight or clamp.

      Thanks! Just made a bunch more rigid weights last week. I would love to have about 10 more bag weights, but the require much more effort.

    You have ridiculously good craftsmanship skills. The bags look awesome.

    I used very nearly the same method for making bench rest bag props. The only difference was I weighed out 25lbs of shot sewed into canvas and then sewed the shot filled canvas bag into the saddle shaped leather bag. I made four. Yes it is indeed a lot of work. Yours are exceptionally nice. You do beautiful work!

    There's supposed to be a strip of material down the double top stitch/french seam to re-enforce it. Without it, the material is liable to rip as only the thread is holding the two sides together. It'll do well enough, I'm sure. For cushions or something that might receive stress, that strip of material between the two sides makes it last a lot longer.

      +Adam Rivera Thank you for your comment! Since it is a hand stitch instead of a machine stitch, I am relying on the fact that the leather would actually have to tear in order to fail... I don't think it will see that kind of action. If it was fabric or a machine stitch, I would be much more concerned... 16lbs of shot would be a PITA to clean up!

    A roller works great for when working with contact glue types. Especially if you can get your hands on one that's made with a 90 degree angle holder at the end of the handle. You can pass those through tubes like this one and still apply constant force, where as with a normal roller you struggle a bit because, well, tube.
    Ramble aside those are really nice weight bags. I like the simplistic design. Great stuff!

    Very neat video. I have worked with just a small bit of leather and it was helpful to see you punched stitch holes in advance, correct? I've always hated stitching pieces together until watching this video. If I could make one suggestion: I am a bit slow to take in the details, so slowing down your playback by just a bit would be much appreciated. Either way, I'm going to be coming back here a lot, I think, to learn some more. Thanks again. Mike

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  7 лет назад +3

      +Michael D Kernan yes I pre punch the stitches. Have an awl handy to help open holes that close up. A lot of this was repetitive. A hint is that if you click on the gear icon in the video, you can slow stuff way down or speed it up. I use this all of the time!

    i am looking for a faux leather, (prefferably the one extracted from mushrooms or pineapples) that is as durable as normal leather, and more breathable as well. i have found two the above mentioned, but i cant buy them, as its proving hard to get a reply back. perhaps someone here can help me? it needs to be like belt leather or tool leather thickness

    I love your vids but have you thought about a laser cutter for this kind of work?

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  7 лет назад

      +Matt Byman Thanks! At some point I might get a laser. I used to use one at my work and we used it for everything. It was a 4'x8' 200W laser so it would be hard to get a crappy hobby laser after you get used to cutting 3/4" plywood with one...

    • @mattbyman
      @mattbyman 7 лет назад

      I see what you mean. Would a glowforge do it for you? It is on my list.

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  7 лет назад

      +Matt Byman I think it is a good entry level machine. Some of the promised features like where it scans a drawing is an interesting feature. I liked Epilog lasers. I would hope to have closer to 100 watt laser. CNC routers are more useful to me for mold/pattern making but lasers are good for acrylics and paper craft and marquetry. I also used to use the laser for mocking up parts I intended to make out of laser cut steel before shopping it out. I have been keeping an eye out for a good laser to attach to the Platform... (Not a Chinese tube)

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  7 лет назад +1

      +Spencer I finished the dominoes and they turned out great! I just decided to work on other things for awhile. I will be trying to get production quotes for them in the meantime since there are quite a few people who have expressed interest. I have not yet finished the box as I might recast because the sodium silicate sand left a terrible finish that requires a lot of unnecessary hand work that I haven't made time for. In a perfect world, I'd finish the prototype set and have some sets investment cast here in Detroit this winter. Wouldn't be limited to aluminum in this case!
