Engaging Males of Color (EMOC) is a ground-breaking program established by the #Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual #disAbility Services that addresses the impact of health, economic, and educational disparities experienced by males of color.
One of their most successful initiatives is the storytelling series BEyond Expectations. EMOC works directly with Philadelphia’s #FirstPersonArts, a non-profit organization that celebrates the story in each one of us, to help the men prepare for their performance. With guidance from First Person Arts, stories are written, rehearsed and then finally performed in front of a live audience.
After the #stories are shared, there is time set aside so that audience members can follow up with their observations, comments, or questions. These stories are a spark for a much needed conversation in our culture about mental health. In this case, mental health specifically for males of color.

We love our trans brothers .I am a trans woman and much respect and love always. 😍😍😍😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you for sharing the love, Mia! 💙💙💙
I feel like the social transition is something that should also be discussed, ESPECIALLY for black and poc trans men, precisely for preparing mentally for a whole new set of problems that’ll forever be the new reality. Is this something covered in therapy or with a support group?
Yes and a great question. We hope that various support systems are available to those that need them.
Sad that when he mentioned passing in my head I figured it had to something to do with the cops and I was right.
Yes, we hope that there is a change on the way.
Either way us black folks are always at risk
Heard, Mia.
From day one of social transition I instantly passed (pre t and all) sounds splendid but oml I wasn't ready. Literally one week later experienced police brutality (and was so happy about it because it meant I passed 🤦) , and more fun stuff
Got
- kicked in the face for being out jogging
- arrested for being queuing behind a shoplifter (complete stranger!)
Also
- shit hits the fan when I dare reject women's advances (being publicly yelled at, insulted, getting drinks poured on, all the good stuff)
- being randomly touched by female strangers
- other guys (aggressively) treating me like besties or sworn enemies within seconds of first contacts
And so so so much more
I obviously figured most of it out (except for that girls thing which is concerning, help!), but entering this new world literally overnight was kinda scary. (Pre t )Passing is such a luxurious feeling but especially if you're POC *brace yourself*
Thank you for watching the film and sharing your story here with us. We hope that things only get better for you because you deserve to live your life as YOU.
Man fr fr experiencing women and turning them down or away is something else
This is my greatest concern with transitioning. Folks act like everyone who is trans just wakes up ready to be the other gender. Might be the case for some, but being black in America you always gotta think two steps ahead. I was talking to my brother about this. I told him why would I put myself through all this to transition if I wasn't already a black man. Ain't like after taking T you turn into a white man with good credit. And don't get me twisted I love my race, wouldn't want to be nothing else, but I know in a lot of folks eyes I'm not enemy #2 anymore (Black women), I'm enemy #1 now.
Thank you for the honest share, Cydney, and for lifting up Christian's sharing, too.
Hold ur head, brother!! It's tough out here for black men so be prepared to have tough skin. So much for all that "black male privilege" we supposedly enjoy and "Black men are r the white ppl of the Black community", huh?
This is so sad these things are happening to young black men. I pray for our people of this country to heal and we have a change in our goverment that seems to be a big part of the problems at this time. On that I have to say we as TRANS people will stay strong and stand for the side that is wright and true...
So true, Toni. We too hope that change is on its way and our society becomes strong, inclusive and people are able to heal.
im black and trans, born as a women. I feel so bad for white trans women/men because I think it's easier to tell the difference. Since transitioning I have had almost no problems with people believing I'm a black man, compared to when I was a woman growing up. I think many black women also have this problem, I've seen manly inherently masculine black women like me who are probably men but feel uncomfortable coming out, since the LGBT community isn't that prevalent within black communities.
Chills. That gave me chills.
Thank you for watching, xo
I am sorry that you had to endure this racial profiling!
Indeed, and thank you for taking a moment to watch and comment.
Welcome to the Life of Black Manhood
💙
OMG what a horrible horrible story. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. I see that this video is now 5 years old. I hope to god that things have changed by now. I fear not though. Being white i can't begin to explain how that feels, BUT being gay... I have experienced other deplorable behavior not from cops but members of the public. This shit has to change. Wishing you all the best and I hope really really hope you never experience this bullshit again. btw... you're damn handsome 😛
Thank you for sharing the encouraging comment and some of your own story, Richard.
