    It’s actually the mucus membrane you want to look at, not just the lower eye lid. You need to cover upper lid with thumb, push down slightly (GENTLY pushing eye inward) and at same time pull lower lid down. This will make that membrane pop out a bit so you can check for color

      Look like only vet can do that ? 😁

      That's funny my vet told me to just pull their lower eyelid down and look where it meets the eye

    • @tenderplacebo
      @tenderplacebo Год назад

      @@mikemitchell9157 Sorry, meant to say here’s a link, going over the process a bit.
      Just the lid would def give you an idea and better than nothing, but from what I’ve read and seen it’s the membrane you want.
      Can’t really always just go by the eyes either, thats just one thing to look at; would still want a fecal to know what type a worm or if the load is serious enough to warrant meds.
      There’s a problem with people over worming their herds and resistance is a real issue now with a lot of the wormer now becoming ineffective.

      @@tenderplacebo I'll do what my vet said thanks. And no link in your message. And yes I know all about the over worming my goats have only ever been wormed once when I first get them. And as needed after that

      @@mikemitchell9157 there should be a link by itself, before I double posted on accident. It’s a vet from Virginia tech doing a short lecture on FAMACHA, and goes into the field at end to show the proper way to do it. She has another video doing fecal floats and how to identify the different eggs.
      Good to hear on the goats. I haven’t had to worm either with rotational grazing, but they were wormed before coming to my property about 4 years ago.

    Thank you for this great video. :) I am a paranoid "mama" and want my kids to be as healthy as possible! Much love to you all! A quick question please. My kids are 4 months old and have very small yellow crusties on their nose around the outside or "upper lip". No blockage, or drain. Just a minute amount of dry "yellowish" crust in spots. Is this normal?

      FamilyWhale Not knowing exactly what it might be (we are not vets) I'd check the goat health and care facebook group. That's where we go for starters on any of this. That said, it might be just a little col, but again we're not vets- If it was me, I would put some apple cider vinegar in there water about a tsp per gallon. Also, Probios. It's a probiotic powder that you sprinkle on their grain. Hope that helps...

      I used them on my goats. As long as it's not too loose or too tight, it works fine. It's best to hand wash them with mild soap, warm water and rinse well, then air dry. Metal parts will chip the inside of your dryer.

    how much DE do you give each goat, and how often?

  • @shadesCAN
    @shadesCAN 8 лет назад +2

    This would be a check for1/3 of the worms that plague goats. the barber worms can cause the goat to become anemic, so this is why to look for a healthy red. Just putting that out there in case of somebody trying to treat worms instead of underlying medical problem.

    To see the right part of the eyelid, you need to push the top lid closed and then pull the lower lid down so the conjuntiva pops out. DE Given orally is not an effective dewormer at all. If you have goats, or are thinking about getting goats, I strongly recommend taking a famacha class to learn how to check lids properly, management tips to reduce parasites in your pasture and how to save a goat who is anemic from high worm load. DE won't help. Check out the free, online famacha training offered by university of Rhode island.

    Be careful assuming they don’t have worms if their mucous membranes are pink. Also, according to several studies, the diatomateous earth has no effect on internal parasite control.

    • @libbyjohnson8224
      @libbyjohnson8224 3 года назад

      Abosolutely.... there is no evidence in all the studies to date that it has any effect for INTERNAL parasite control. External yes, as it only works when in a dry environment. Once ingested, it becomes just a great source of mins - NO PARASITE CONTROL

      Asalamu Alikum Sidra Khan, The swelling jaw problem is because of warm in stomach and it lacks in good nutritious food. Kindly feed him with good concentrated food which especially have high "protein". Check hows your goat body hair is. If it is not looking shiny and soft then you should dewarm him.
