    The issue is that teams knew that he was going to be dealt. When teams know that a player is going to be traded, that immediately lowers the value. Plus, Alex DeBrincat had made it clear he wanted to go to Detroit. Plus he made it clear he didn't want to stay long term in Ottawa.

      It didn't lower his value that much, but his 27 goals vs 40 did. Sens paid a 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and got back a lower 1st, an NHL-player equiv to 2nd, a 4th, and a prospect, so not bad for the Sens considering he went from 40 goals to 27 and was a -31 on an over 500 team. He'll probably do well on the first line with good players and bounce back a bit.

      The thing is Dorion shot himself in the foot, and stubborn about it. It was no secret, even when he was in Chicago, that he wanted to go to Detroit. To me, from everything I heard and read, Dorion knew Debrincat wanted to go to Detroit, kept it all quiet to be the key piece to sign Claude Giroux in free-agency. It's also no secret Dorion always wanted Claude Giroux, so in all fairness, the trade itself is pretty bleak, but that trade was a huge factor in bringing in Claude Giroux, then the trade out is what it is, but bringing in Debrincat did it's job to sway Giroux to sign with Ottawa. I will only forgive the trade itself depending what Dorion does with the first and fourth round picks. He's definitely not done, so there has to be a bigger play in mind, like maybe an offer-sheet to Lafreniere that will either cost a second, or a first and third depending on the offer sheet, or a play to maybe get Travis Konecny, as Dorion now has enough draft capital to possibly pull this trade off, while at the same time, possibly getting a third team involved to chew some of Konecny's cap hit, or completely solidify the defense in a trade with maybe Carolina for Pesce that could involve moving a Brannstrom and a prospect like an Ostapchuk or a Crookshank, and Detroit or Boston's first. Either way, there has to be more than this. They cannot run with this roster and make the playoffs. However if they get either Konecny, Lafreniere or Pesce, that should move the needle enough for Ottawa to make the playoffs.

      This is exactly why the Sens need to get rid of Dorion and bring in a guy like Daniel Alfredsson. GMs like Stevie Y, Joe Sakic, Bill Guerin have all been with winning teams and knows what combinations do work with the structures they played on to win. Remember Alfredsson was the guy who pushed big time for the team to draft Erik Karlsson when he wasnt supposed to go that high in the draft. That shows Alfredsson could be great at the draft. He knows the route to development as he was a very late draft pick himself, and knows what pieces will work, and what coaches will work with that system. He knows the process of contract negotiations, how much cap % to put into their stars, so he should be good with contracts. Making good trades he will learn, and be becomes a full package GM, like Joe, Stevie, and Bill. Im just hoping the writing is on the wall, and this Debrincat trade is the final nail in the coffin for Dorion as it was a terrible trade from Chicago, maybe one of his worst yet, followed closely by the Zibanejad trade, and the Mark Stone trade, along with drafting Tyler Boucher as high as they did instead of trading down and get some other picks or pieces, and still get Boucher considering Cole Sillinger was still on the board, it's Dorion's time to go and hopefully the talk between Andlauer and Alfredsson was to discuss becoming the new GM once Andlauer has the keys to the team. Ill say this much. If the Sens arent in a playoff spot before the team goes overseas, both Dorion and DJ Smith are fired, guaranteed.

    Debrincat basically screwed over the senators by making it absolutely clear - after continuously denying it until near the end - that he had zero intentions of staying in OTT. He basically picked the team he wanted to be traded to as well and he was going to be able to choose by the end of next season regardless and leave for nothing so I don't think anyone can say the Sens got fleeced or that it truly looks bad.

  • @C.M.Giordano
    @C.M.Giordano Год назад +22

    I honestly don't think the trade is all that bad. DeBrincat is coming off a down year, any team acquiring him knows he doesn't want to sign in Ottawa, he still hasn't necessarily proven he's a legitimate threat to score 40 outside of playing peak minutes on a bad team (like he did in Chicago), and the team doing the trade and sign still wouldn't give him what he (allegedly) wanted as far as term or money. All of those things combined, Ottawa gets a 1st rounder and a guy that can play in your top 9 who likely won't be expensive to re-sign, I don't think that's a terrible return, but that's just my 2 cents.

      @yankeesk8er55 Год назад

      @yankeesk8er55 No, Ottawa got rid of a player who was a distraction. They ended up with something and got rid of the distraction

    • @chrisfortin984
      @chrisfortin984 Год назад

      No, it was bad through and through. There's a reason why Ottawa got Debrincat for what they did. All the other GM's did their due diligence, knowing Debrincat wouldnt re-sign with them, and stayed clear of him. Only Dorion had interest cause it would turn out as a bad deal a year later. Dorion should have followed what all the other GM's did and stayed clear of Debrincat. If you give up as much as Ottawa did to get any player, you better be damn sure they will re-sign. Not maybe, not "ill see later", but it better be verbally agreed and when the trade is finalized, all you have to do is put it to paper, and have that player dot the I's and cross the T's. No one better say you cant do that before a trade, cause Stevie Y did it, cause he did his due diligence like every other good GM does. Dorion didn't, yet again, and why he needs to be fired. It was a terrible trade going back to last off-season with Chicago. For the return from Detroit, you get a late first, a guy that will play in the top 9 (who still isn't re-signed, which like I said, should have been put to paper already), so from all we know, is another 1-year rental as there isnt a re-signing, a guy who wont play in the NHL, especially with the Sens, and a 4th. Very bad return. It could have been somewhat salvagable if 1) they already re-signed Kubalik by now, and 2) Use that new drafting assets and offer-sheet a guy like Alexis Lafreniere, where if they offer-sheet him at 4M, Rangers likely dont match and you give up a second round pick as compensation, who would fit very well on the second line, putting Kubalik on your third line who can move up if there is an injury. Remember the trade was the #7 pick, the #33 pick and a 2024 third to get Debrincat. They got no where near what they gave up. and if Kubalik walks, it will look like a complete fleecing by Detroit, and I mean COMPLETE.

    • @C.M.Giordano
      @C.M.Giordano Год назад

      @@chrisfortin984 It's funny that you worded your reply the way that you did. Not because you're wrong about Dorion's gaffes, but because the Blackhawks had multiple offers for DeBrincat and simply took the best one, which was from Ottawa. Saying that the Senators were the only team that pursued DeBrincat is categorically false, however. There are multiple parts here that call for speculation, like the suggestion of a sign and trade (for example, Steve Yzerman was able to sign DeBrincat to an extension prior to/simultaneously with the trade because Ottawa granted DeBrincat and his agent permission to talk to other teams. I don't recall if the Blackhawks did that or not. As such, you can't blame a GM for not making a sign and trade if they don't have permission to talk contract with the player beforehand [however, this does not negate other mistakes Dorion may have made that you allude to]).
      Furthermore, implying that good GMs don't take calculated risks like acquiring players and hoping that they'll be able to change a player's mind into staying with an organization is also false (though, again, in the case of Dorion and DeBrincat I don't necessarily disagree with your assessment). GMs acquire players at high costs with the hope of being able to re-sign them, not certainty, on a pretty regular basis.
      Finally, evaluating the trade based on the trade Dorion made to acquire DeBrincat isn't necessarily fair, in my opinion. Simply because 1) it was a year ago, 2) as previously mentioned, Dorion may not have actually known DeBrincat wasn't interested in re-signing in Ottawa (especially since he was acquired prior to the organization going up for sale, and the uncertainty around said sale was at least part of his hesitance to re-sign), 3) we have no idea who Ottawa would have drafted had they kept those picks and if they would have been better off doing so, and 4) we have no idea what Kevin Korchinski (#7 pick), Paul Ludwinski (#39 pick) or whoever the 2024 pick ends up being (if Chicago even keeps it) will be. There's a chance they don't even make it to the NHL. The Senators could also have drafted two players with those picks and missed completely, so looking at previous trades in order to evaluate this one just seems silly to me, especially if, in a year or two (or 5), it turns out that Ottawa used the 1st rounder they got from Detroit to draft an absolute stud.
      It's also possible DeBrincat doesn't work out in Detroit and the guy who was supposed to be a 40-goal threat is actually a 20-25 goal per year guy when he isn't playing with Patrick Kane and he was hyped up more than he should have been.
      Side note, I don't agree with the part about signing Kubalik immediately, either. He's under contract for this season already, why commit more term to him before he's even played a game for you?
      In conclusion, Dorion may not be the most competent GM, I won't argue with you about that. But to say cut and dry that this is a horrible situation for the Senators is still premature, I think.

    What Ottawa got back for DeBrincat is fine. His trade value decreased due to his play last year and playing a year off his contract, not because the Senators got fleeced. Unless he is with an elite playmaking center, he's never hitting 40 again. Let's see how long Lalonde keeps him with Larkin as well with his defensive warts. He also got paid, so lets see how motivated he is play each night.
    Ottawa did alright. They received a middle six scoring winger in Kubalik which they needed. I'd rather Kubalik than another pick or prospect. They also got assets to flip to go out and acquire another top four right handed defenseman if they desire.
    The winner of the trade is whichever team makes it to the playoffs this year.

Plus, let's see if he can score those goals come playoff time once the Wings get back in. I'm happy with Kubalik and the other returns and the cap space we've gained to go out and get another middle 6 forward. I hope Debrincat thanked Dorion because he could have been moved to another team and perhaps Pierre did him a solid when he could have been spiteful. Cheers

I remember when the Detroit Lions traded Jeff Okudah to the Falcons I said to Falcons fans who was trying to hype him up more than he was that " you can always tell the value of a player by when he is traded/ let go through Free Agency, read what fans are saying about him.." I then go and say " if they're not saying anything like 'we'll miss him', messages or any Ill-will on him for leaving, then you KNOW you have a good fish!😁
      But if most fans aren't saying anything or even the opposite and wishing more good luck then that means he had/has potential, just didn't do the team a disservice.. soooo SEE YA AND GOOD LUCK!...
      YEP!,.. now when fans act like that I told Falcons fans then he wasn't really that valuable overall to the team😁.. I told them read the comments of the Lions fans and tell me which vibe YOU'RE GETTING!..😁
      Think got the message!.. anyways thanks Sens fans for confirming we have a good FISH!.. or in this case a good CAT🤭😁😉

      It's 7 goals and 19 assists at a minimum. Upside is between 13-15 more goals and 25 more assists. Kub had an up year and ADB had a down year. ADB is somewhere between 1.5 to 2 times better than Kub in points.
      Also factor in that Kub had no future here in Detroit, so it is a no-impact loss. We were likely going to trade him at the deadline next year if we miss the playoffs. With ADB pushing out other wingers down, our entire wing just got stronger. We may have a shot at wild card (weren't too far off last year with a much worst roster).
      Finally, we still have a pick in every round next draft and kept all our core prospects. I like Sebrango, but we have at minimum 3 LHD prospects in front of him. We were likely going to lose/trade him as well.
      Wings could be scary in 2 years if none of Cossa, Edvinsson, Mazur, Kasper, ASP, and Danielson are busts. We'll be super deep.
