Thanks I am deathly allergic to dust mites after 45 years on earth I found out I am most allergic to them and been cleaning my mattress literally every morning all tips appreciated cheers
Hello. Thank you for making this video. I did as you said, and I added the carpet cleaner vacuum to it. The spot cleaner wasn't sucking up any water expect one dirty spot. I used cologne because I didn't have any disinfectant until I found Lysol. I should have waited. Lol
@@CleaningHowTo A disinfectant that claims it kills 99% of bacteria and more. I thought Lysol was everywhere. We had a Lysol shortage during the pandemic, and Americans were angry that brand was short on supply. 😂
@@CleaningHowTo No. It has this. I wish I could explain more on this product because I study Chemistry, but I don't know what that ingredient is. @Cleaning How To Lysol is called Dettol or Detol in different countries if I remember correctly. I think that they are also both Reckitt Benckiser products or maybe licensed to different companies in different countries.
500g of dead skin a year can't all remain on the surface of the mattress. Can it? Where does it, the mites and their poo go? Into the room or can they penetrate the interior of the mattress? If the mattress is 15-20cm thick, does hoovering do much to remove anything that's penetrated the interior of the mattress? I have a mattress that got a few mould spots while in storage. I cleaned it but some mould spots reappeared. Is it shot for good or can something be done about it? It's not enormously mouldy on the surface, just a few spots. Thank you.
THANK YOU! I'm trying to figure out how to clean up some camping/trifold mattresses we have, as my son and I suffer from serious dust mite allergies, and these mattresses are riddled with their poop! :-P I guess we're gonna have to start by buying a hepa filter vacuum. Probably a good idea to have that anyway for our allergies! ;-) Cheers!!!
Yup, you absolutely need a hepa filtered vacuum with your allergies! I use one myself - I’ve done another video on dust mite allergies, you should have a look!
My mattress actually got a mattress protector I just checked, if I remember correctly it’s to prevent sweat and liquid from going into the mattress, it feels plastic like. So does it block dust mites too? Thanks for your help.
So dust mites will only be present if they have a food source; skin cells. The mattress protector should prevent dead skin cells from lodging in the mattress so dust mites wont be bothered with it :|)
Wouldn't a vacuum with a disposable bag be more efficient to get rid of the dust mites? The suction power is usually not as good in bagless vacuums compared to the ones with a disposable bag. Furthermore what happens to the mites when you have to clean the bagless vacuum?
Hi, thank you for the guide. I wanted to check can I use a mini turbo head (non-electric) on a Numatic vacuum (Henry or Hetty) or must we purchase a Shark vacuum?
I usually clean both sides of my mattress and the box spring both sides,it seems like just doing the top side is not enough,do you clean both sides of your mattress?
Hey, what happens if the mattress has stains as well (old sweat stains etc).... should you remove stains (follow your vomit stain remover clip using Hydo Peroxide, the iron and towel etc) first... and then sanitise, or should you sanitise and then remove stains... does the order actually matter? - would this work 1. vaccum up 2. baking soda to bring up oils and moisture to the surface, leave for 25 mins 3. vaccum that up . 4. remove stains via hydro peroxide video tips (btw, can you let me know the exact quantities in your formula), iron over a towel ... repeat process until stains have removed... 6. then do the things in this video Vacum again, then sanitise using rubbing alcohol etc...... 7. open up windows.. leave to dry for a few hours... would this be okay?
Clean and sanitise the mattress first, then do the peroxide steps (buy RTU 3% peroxide), baking soda step not required. A wet vac might be helpful to suck out excess moisture. Also misting white vinegar over the areas to neutralise everything would e a good idea. Do it early in the day so it has more time to dry but yo can speed up drying with a hairdryer or even ironing it dry on a lower heat setting on the iron.
I just moved into Uni and would like to clean my mattress since I have a life threatening dust allergy. I already clean things down once a week with bleach, how often should I do this with the mattress?
I'd vacuum all soft furnishings once a week with a hospital grade sealed hepa vacuum cleaner - this will remove the dust mites and dead skin (their food). No food, no dust mite problem!
Lol I’ve never done this… considering i have almost chronic dandruff this is probably a must.. i can literally run my hand through my hair fast and never ending dandruff will come off my head
Dandruff is internal you need to find out why. It's a symtom or a condition. Try going gluten free. Alot of people tried that for a bit and it went away.
@@CleaningHowTo oh...but I've been reading articles saying that the high temperature of the steam will kill the mites.., no? And could you share how you came to realize that what you're experiencing is allergic to mite poop? And how long did it take you to realize?
@@FinWonderland it’s dust mite excrements that cause allergies. Steam kills the mite but the excrement must be cleaned off to avoid breathing it. I knew I was allergic because I had trouble breathing when I woke up. I hope that helps.
Man, I bought a Memory foam mattress last Summer on which I managed to sleep Just the First 3 nights then I Always woke up with allergic breathing crisis and persistent pricking. I think I May Be allergical to Memory foam, but probably It Is Also infested by mites. I cleaned several times with vacuum cleaner, but I never used anything else to sanitize but sodium bicarbonate. Looks like It was useless. Do you recommend me to use some alchool solution, Is It really good against mites? Also the process of microfiber towel wet with dishes soap and hot water looks so useful! I Hope these products won't Ruin the mattress! Very helpful video anyway and Sorry for long comment!
Memory foam will 'gas' off for a while after manufacture but it should diminish. If you think it's infested my mites you need to get an insecticide - and/or steam. Alcohol will kill bacteria but not mites afaik. Might be best in your case to call a pro!
@cleaning how to. Idk if it was mentioned in the comments, but how often should we clean the mattress like this. My allergies would really appreciate it. 😁
You’re better off getting a really good sealed hepa vacuum and vacuuming all your soft furnishings (including curtains) once a month - do the mattress clean about once every 3 months if you feel it needs it
@@CleaningHowTo oh wow, super quick reply. I was looking at the one in the video actually, the Orson super lite. I have fabric roller blinds in the bedroom, but pretty sure I could vacuum and steam those. As for the rest of the things you stated, I can definitely do those. Thanks very much.
@@CleaningHowTo one more question please. I have a orthopedic pillow that cannot be washed in the machine. If i follow these same techniques, it should still work, i am guessing. For hair oil stains what do you suggest please?
What about the sides of the mattress? While moving my mattress was dragged across the back of a dirty truck, so what was originally off white is now filthy..??
You’re incorrect to the point of both misinformed and providing misinformation. Hepa filters capture down to 0.3 microns. Go read up on it and come back to correct your assertion. You’d be correct if I wasn’t using a hepa vacuum but I am and you are simply wrong.

Dust mites can only live if they have a food source (dust; skin cells) - get rid of the food and you’ll get rid of the dust mites
So regular cleaning then.
