It's strange how a drama set in 1958 was made in 1977 with clear nostalgia in the era of disco and punk rock. I can't imagine a drama made today set in 2006.
There was a lot of '50s nostalgia at the time - American Graffiti, Grease, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, MASH. You are right - there was a staggering difference between the cultures of 1949 and 1969 or 1953 and 1973. By contrast we can watch '90s shows like Friends, Absolutely Fabulous or Frasier without getting cultural shock because in some ways little seems to have changed (so we aren't necessarily hit by a sense of nostalgia).
I was born in 44 in Lancashire so I have seen so many changes, although the mill towns of youth have long gone the memories remain. We can never go back, yet the future looks increasingly bleak to me, the England that I knew has also long gone, by accident I moved to Ireland, there is no home to go back too.

Very interesting point. I guess it depends on your age and point of view but personally I find nothing nostalgic about the early 2,000’s.
❤
Crikey! That brings back memories!
