    I would argue that the amulet of fireballs is really a consumable though, since you don't get any extra beads ever (just the ones the magic item starts with, that's it). If you have some casters in the party, the ring of spell storing is one of my favourites, you have a great con save (particularly if you have advantage on the save as well) so concentration spells are a super powerful option, effectively giving your party an additional concentration spell. A caster that puts a haste spell or a polymorph (or even just a bunch of shield and absorb elements spells) in this ring is great for the fighter. Haste is amazing for any combat character and polymorph can give you about 150 hp when your almost down, it can be an absolute lifesaver. Bracers of archery is also a great option for those archers that you kept talking about but didn't really put anything for on the list.

    My current character is a level 5 Dwarf Fighter wielding axe and shield with Duelist as a fighting style. For martial archetype he went Brute for both the extra damage die and the extra saving throw die at level 7. He's got a +1 adamantine dwarven axe, a +1 suit of adamantine armor, a +1 shield, a +1 cloak of protection and a +1 ring of protection all adding to an AC of 24. We were given a free feat choice at start, and I picked Heavy Armor Mastery which not only gave him -3 DR versus most non magical attacks, it gave him a +1 Str which allowed him to start with an 18 strength (point buy). At level 4 I bumped that to 20. Next level I am picking up Sentinel. After that, resilience on Wisdom (which will bring it to 14) for saving throw proficiency.
    Pretty darn effective tank, let me tell you. My squishies walk without fear.

    I'm quite partial to the Sun Blade. It's pretty much a lightsaber. It's a hilt that becomes a +2 Longsword with the finesse property that deals Radiant dmg rather than slashing, deals extra dmg to undead, and it sheds bright light that counts as sunlight which you can adjust the range of. Pretty good for a Dex based Fighter I'd say. Let's the non-holy, non-caster party members deals with undead, Drow, etc.

    I would say that the belts of giant strength works well for Dexterity based fighters.
    They aren't dependent on it like a strength fighter would be. But it boosts their saves and allows them to grapple and cover any physical challenges that come their way.
    Besides, its all fun and games until the scrawny archer the ogres charged pulls out a great axe and starts cleaving.
    (The same goes for the beefy tank with a dex boosting item that suddenly starts sniping dudes).
    That on demand versatility really allows you to play with all their weapon proficiencies.

  • @YourBoyNobody530
    @YourBoyNobody530 4 года назад +12

    I'd actually argue that the belt of giant strength is best used on a fighter using dexterity as it allows the fighter to have a very nice strength score without the investment required for a high strength stat meaning you can use a strength based weapon like a great sword then used a dexterity based weapon like a long bow which allows a person to successfully use both great weapon master and sharp shooter with out error also fighters are one of the only classes that can get two fighting styles meaning you can reduce the sharp shooter penalty to only a minus 1

    • @jaspermooren5883
      @jaspermooren5883 4 года назад +3

      You can't pick the same fighting style more than once, so no +4 attack for you sadly... In general though the "your score is now this" are the most effective on people with a low score already. So indeed a dex fighter would have more use for it. Or the other way around I think that for a Strenght based fighter the dex is 19 item is actually pretty great.

    • @destroyerinazuma96
      @destroyerinazuma96 4 года назад

      Archery can be taken once and then one can pick up Defence or whatever floats their boat. But on a +2 bow the penalty is indeed gonna shrink to -1 just not from class features alone.

      imo some of those options dont really matter for the eldritch knight, and there are better items. ring of spell storing is god tier for that class. even just pearls of power can greatly extend the use of your spell slots. especially early on.

    ring of spell storing very under-rated for a fighter, being a melee class that is proficient in con saves, you can hold concentration on your buff spells better than your caster (think having access to the ability to haste yourself without being a uber high level eldritch knight), and your casters free up their concentration for other spells.
    flame tongue for a fighter is almost game breaking in my opinion. your usually more than DOUBLING your damage you would naturally deal. sure you can come up against fire resistance/ immunity creatures, but against allot of things your just going to be destroying them.
    like it's definitely a rare if a paladin, or a barbarian can get it, but with a fighter it's likely better than a significant amount of ultra rare and even some legendary items
    It's honestly funny because as good as a flame tongue is for a fighter as a DM I'm not sure I'd ever give a fighter one, simply because it basically makes it so that they deal 2.5x more attacks than normal. it's literally like being able to action surge every turn, except you can also still action surge and get ANOTHER attack.

  • @maxx8362
    @maxx8362 4 года назад

    I would also suggest wand of magic missile for much the same reason you included necklace of fireballs and a ring of spell storing. Fighters in general have nothing to concentrate on, and what way for them to use their concentration then on their own buff spells when they have their wizard or cleric cast the spell into the ring before the fight. Also, how terrifying would a melee fighter be if the ring containing a wall of force or far step.

    Gloves of missle snaring, broach of shielding... scimitar of speed.
    Also, there's a slight difference between tanking and 'yeah you're going to get damaged.' The only fighter subclass that really tanks is the Battlemaster. Admittedly I love Battlemaster and will tend to pick it unless I'm going for a specific theme, so this list is very much within my intrests.

    • @zachbrown9350
      @zachbrown9350 4 года назад

      All fighter subclasses can tank pretty well. I'd say that eldritch knight could tank better than battlemaster thanks to shield, haste, and other defense-boosting spells. Proficiency in all armor and a d10 hit die make any fighter a good tank for a group without a barbarian. The only exception I'd say is the arcane archer or other ranged build, but I played an arcane archer and it was still very durable.

    • @Wanderingsage7
      @Wanderingsage7 4 года назад +1

      @@zachbrown9350 fair, and EK does make a good tank style, though in my opinion EK's spells don't have quite the same debilitating effects as Battlemaster. There's more to tanking then being able to take a hit.

    Fighters are, at their core, the class that *fights* and that’s melee, ranged, thrown weapons, etc.
    If you want a class that tanks, play the barbarian that gets 35 hp by level 4 and has advantage on all attacks while attacks against you have advantage, incentivizing your enemies to attack you instead of your allies.

    Ok interesting question. Would using the animated shield allow a fighter to benefit from the mariner fighting style and gain the AC bonus of the shield? The fighting style says that it doesn't work if the person is wielding a shield but they aren't technically wielding it, it shouldn't interfere with climbing and swimming since it essentially hovers around them and it allows for the use of both hands unhindered when activated. I know in the end of the day it's DM discretion but I find it potentially interesting to see if it works.

    Can confirm about necklace of fireball. I had a fighter who received two custom item that were effectively, 1/long rest necklaces of fireball (except thunder and lighting damage). As an archery fighter, it was quite satisfying to open up with one of them, and then action surge to pelt the survivors with arrows. It was even more satisfying to look upon a horde and use both via action surge (which may not have been legal but the DM didn't question it and I didn't know if it could be wrong at the time or not).

      See I used to love oath bow, but I find it less appealing now. The fact that it only choose one enemy, once a day makes it a hard sell for me. If you get into a fight and there are multiple enemies, sure you can take one of them down very quickly with advantage and the extra 3d6 damage. But after that enemy is slain, it is essentially just a magic longbow with no bonus to attack or damage. And even if your enemy is alive you have disadvantage against other enemies during that fight.
      Don't get me wrong against a singular big boss fight, like a dragon or something, this is huge. But against multiple smaller enemies it loses its luster to me

    how is belt of giant strength more useful on fighters that use strength and not dexterity? i think its its the other way around. chances are by the time you would get access to an item like that, your main attack stat is already around 20. be that dex or strength.
    if you get the weaker version of it, then going from 20 to 21 strength on a strength based fighter does literally nothing for you. even going from 18 to 21 is just a +1 on the stat modifier.
    but if youre playing a dex fighter who has 10 or 12 strength, then going from a +0 to a +5 is massive, both for your saves and also for roleplaying purposes. you can do things you previously couldnt do at all. you also get a huge boost to athletic checks to do trip, and push attacks on your dex fighter.
    these stat boost items generally seem more useful to me to boost an off stat, or a stat you have been dumping, and they are better at covering weaknesses of your character than amplifying his strengths. unless its really the highest tier item of the group and pushes your stat up to 25 from 18 or 20. but good luck getting your hand on that, when you cant just buy magic items in 5e in most campaigns.
