Wish I would have just done this right from the start. Apparently they didnt require VIN inspections during covid!
I realize this video is over a year old but this is great info. One question that you didn’t fully cover. Did you have your friend who gifted the bike on the bill of sale? I have a similar situation with a bike that was sold from an estate after the owner died and the second owner sold it to me but he never registered the bike in his name. All I have is an expired VT registration from the original owner.
If you look at the VT website, they say you need a VIN verification for exempt titles, and you can apply for an exempt title if you're a vermont resident, but it doesn't appear that exempt titles are issued for out of state residents. Have you tried this process without the vin form? I just recently sent in an application without the vin form, so I'll find out sooner or later. I also just got a NY plate (hopefully the title will be coming soon) for a bike I registered in VT 5-6 years ago, I never sent a vin verification on that bike.
I showed exactly how I did it this one time. My only experience with it. I continue to suggest going to the Vermont dor website and cartitles.com for thr latest info
@@colinlaw-ks4is because the bike was a '72 not '73 or newer, I received a NYS transferrable registration, not title, but this is just as good according to NYS. hooray!
Little update FLORIDA no longer honors this method. In other words, at least for now, you can't register a vermont title in FL if your vermont registration doesn't meet conventional standards. in other words if you live in FL you'll have to go another route which there are almost not other options because a bonded title only works for newer vehicles etc.
Hmm, I'm honestly not sure Pat. I would contact the cartitles.com guy I have linked as he does this for a living. This is the only time Ive ever tried it so my experience is very limited.

In the hypothetical scenario where you were unable to obtain a signature on your bill of sale at purchase, is a signature required on the reg form or the bill of sale form?
Well obviously you need the seller signature on a bill of sale. From there the process to apply for the Vermont registration didn't require the previous owners signature. Fun fact, BOS didn't have to be notarized so I could hypothetically recommend you have another person sign in their place...
Hey. Quick question. How did you determine the sales tax on the bike for when you wrote/submitted the check ? I’m doing this for a car I bought for $1000. I live in NYC the car was bought here as well. Do I use VT sales tax percentage or NYC
Its based on the estimated value. As an example I used the mid level estimate from NADA which you include with your docs. Better to pay more here to get it right the first time
@@BrickHouseBuilds gotcha. One more question, did you calculate the sales tax of the bike using Missouri’s sales tax percentage or did you calculate sales tax using Vermonts sales tax percentage?
Great video! i’m in the process of doing this myself, i have a bill of sale but it’s not the official vermont document bill of sale, should it still work if i send this one in?
HI, good video ,,,couple questions, when they send you the registration and the vermont tags to your state is the bike legally able to be ridden with those tags on it? Also, will this work for a bike where the title is "lost" maybe somehwere there is a title floating around but the seller did not have it, can you still use this method? TY again.
You can ride the bike but don't consider it a permanent thing as you aren't a resident of Vermont. For the lost title if you have contact with the previous owner I'd try to have them apply for a lost title to then sign over to you. That would be much easier. If you don't know who had the title last, purchase a records search from the state you think it was last registered in and go from there.

yes you can have vermont plates and insurance from another state. i have 4 cars registered and 2 bikes as well and i live in ny. vermont dmv does not ask for insurance. they give you plates and registration at the dmv or by mail. it is your responsibilty to tet your own insurance. it does not matter from what state. vermont does not care as long as you have insurance
Did you have to get insurance on it prior to transferring the registration to your state? I was told I should do the registration and title at the same time.
You don't need insurance to do a title transfer. You just need insurance and inspection to then get registration for the road. You could do both to save time but none of this has anything to do with the Vermont registration side of things which you need before anything else
@@BrickHouseBuilds Yeah, I was told 2 different things. I was told they might not transfer it to my state if I didn't have both done at the same time. I was kinda worried my states DMV wouldn't give me my state title for the Vermont registration.

@@BrickHouseBuilds Not quite. Vermont REQUIRES NADA clean dealer trade in value, if you try anything else they will not accept it. Then they do tax on that value or your bill of sale price, whichever is GREATER.
Its kbb or nada whichever is highest. They use that to determine tax. You want your bill of sale figure to be within a reasonable distance from that higher value figure so it doesn't seem like you are trying to scam them.
A bonded title is completely different. This is a proof of ownership that you obtain via Vermont. You then transfer that to get a clean clear title in your state. Thats assuming your state accepts this form of ownership documentation

Vermont will not issue a Title to a Non-resident. This will only work if your state accepts an out of state registration as ownership. Many states do not. For example, GA, NC, and VA do not acknowledge a registration as proof of ownership, must be titled.
Im a non resident and got the registration as the video shows. You are correct in saying some states don't accept this the same way but I also stated that.
@@VToutdoors81 What do you wish for me to change it to? A few notes, nearly every video or site on the matter uses Vermont title and Vermont registration as one in the same. On the back of the registration it has an area to fill out for transfer of ownership. I explain all of these things. My title is clear and easy to search for those seeking information on the matter.
@@BrickHouseBuilds You can do whatever you want, but youre video perpetuates the misinformed thought that Vermont issues titles to people trying to title an old bike.

Little update FLORIDA no longer honors this method.

All info within one on-topic video is what people prefer instead of having to watch 3 different ones. Have a good one Joe
Then the title of your video is misleading.
@@VToutdoors81 What do you wish for me to change it to?
A few notes, nearly every video or site on the matter uses Vermont title and Vermont registration as one in the same. As I stated in the video Vermont doesn't issue a physical title for vehicles over 15 years old so the registration acts as the ownership document AKA title.
Vermont can and will issue titles to vehicles 15 years and older, you just have to fill out the correct forms and be a resident. I lived there for 9 years and got a title for my old bike before I moved.
@@VToutdoors81 Man the process sure worked well by the book for me who obviously has no clue whats going on lol. I apologize for simply making an in-depth video explaining what it means with the whole title versus registration thing and how you can use it to your advantage. Take care sir
