    This is great . The expanded versions of Jack Johnson and On The Corner are a real treat too .

    In a way, this is Miles Davis best 'post acoustic' band line up. Don't get me wrong, the 'original' 1969 incarnation w/ Jack, Chick, Dave and Wayne was great and so was the super dense and trippy 1970 ensemble (Jack, Dave, Chick , Keith, Airto and either Steve or Gary) that played the many Fillmore gigs and the Isle of Wight Festival. But this 1971 band somehow has a more stripped dow, funkier, more groove oriented footing that perfectly mixed the earthy w/ the cerebral. And yeah as the liner notes here describe this band's sound is a direct predecessor to the 1972 On The Corner concept of rhythmic layering, textures and free counterpoint that would more or less inform the Miles Davis working bands thereafter.

      And one of the best things about this band is that Airto isn't here, endlessly farting around with that cuica

    • @teelurizzo8542
      @teelurizzo8542 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@AeroModule Respectfully disagree. The Cuíca has a very unique sound, and was totally fitting w/ Miles' 1970, freer, kinda overcrowded, dual keyboard live band.Also, the cuíca was not the only instrument Airto played in the band. Still I think that for this 1971, stripped down band, Mtume and Don Alias approach was the more fitting.

    A great band at one of it's creative peaks. A timely reminder that Miles was a catalyst for getting a band to produce magic, as well as inspiring with his horn.Back of the hair raising stuff-terrific.

    Great upload! Miles' output from these years is spread out over so many different albums and archival releases (som emerging only long after his death in 1991) that I didn't quite realize there had been a complete break-off in studio work for almost two years after the summer of 1970 up till May 1972, and so few official live recordings from the same period. Are there any clues about the reasons for this sudden drop-off? He had one of the greatest live bands of his career (as documented here and on Live-Evil), they were steadily touring and he knew he was making history. Did Columbia refuse to fund more recording when they already had a backlog of unreleased material?
    There was the planned but aborted project of sessions with Jimi Hendrix as a featured soloist - I remember reading a comment here on RUclips last year by some guy who had been a junior engineer at the time, he claimed to have seen (in August 1970) a note in somebody's calendar at the CBS studios in NY for October 2, a session booked for Miles and Jimi. Of course that never happened, instead Hendrix was buried in Seattle the same day, with Miles Davis in attendance. :(

      Got a chance to meet Ndugu @ one of the NAMM shows on the early 2000's. Think I had "What I Say", twin European tour sets from Switzerland & Fillmore West, circa Nov '71 with Jarrett, Ndugu, Bartz, Alias, Mtume, & Henderson. I showed them to him, he got excited. He said he needed to get more of the CDs...

    What a fantastic upload! My favorite Miles concert of all time. Everything is just magic here, and it's so great to hear the complete performance, running about 7 minutes longer than the edited version I've heard.
    A small note, though - there seems to be a "hiccup" at 10:14. This doesn't occur on the edited version. Other than that, absolutely stellar stuff! Thanks!

    Keith Jarrett is playing electric piano and RMI, Rocky Mount Instrument ( North Carolina), an early portable and transistorized electric organ, as opposed to vaccum tube, or pipe organs, which tend to be way larger.

    I've read and heard stories of and by Mtume, himself, didn't like Conga players. Even though, he played Congas himself. Had it not been for Don Alias, in my opinion, the band would not have been cohesive, as it was...

    Can't understand why this should be so good regarding the sound. Why would Miles have 2 Percussionists, if you can hardly hear them? Also the drum sound is out of balance, floor tom to loud. There is a video which is far better in every way: ruclips.net/video/v0IGV0SG4uQ/видео.html
